Cast Stainless Steel CD4MCu, ASTM A351 Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Datasheet: Cast Stainless Steel CD4MCu, ASTM A351** #### **1. Product Overview** Cast Stainless Steel CD4MCu under ASTM A351 specification is a duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel that combines high strength with excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking and erosion-corrosion. This chromium-nickel-molybdenum-copper alloy offers an optimal balance of mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, making it particularly suitable for demanding applications in corrosive environments, especially those containing chlorides. **Key Advantages:** - **Excellent Corrosion Resistance:** Superior performance in chloride-containing environments - **High Mechanical Strength:** Approximately twice the yield strength of standard austenitic stainless steels - **Good Resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking:** Excellent performance in environments susceptible to SCC - **Excellent Erosion-Corrosion Resistance:** Ideal for applications involving high-velocity fluids - **Good Wear Resistance:** Suitable for abrasive service conditions --- #### **2. International Standard** This product conforms to the latest edition of: - **ASTM A351/A351M:** Standard Specification for Castings, Austenitic, Austenitic-Ferritic (Duplex), for Pressure-Containing Parts Additional applicable standards: - **UNS J93370:** Unified Numbering System designation - **ASME SA351:** ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code equivalent - **ISO 11972:** Corrosion-resistant cast steels for general applications --- #### **3. Chemical Composition (Heat Analysis, %)** The chemical composition is carefully balanced to maintain the optimal austenitic-ferritic microstructure. | Element | Composition (%) | |---------|-----------------| | Carbon (C) | 0.04 max | | Manganese (Mn) | 1.00 max | | Silicon (Si) | 1.00 max | | Phosphorus (P), max | 0.04 | | Sulfur (S), max | 0.04 | | Chromium (Cr) | 24.5-26.5 | | Nickel (Ni) | 4.75-6.00 | | Molybdenum (Mo) | 1.75-2.25 | | Copper (Cu) | 2.75-3.25 | | Nitrogen (N) | 0.10-0.25 | *Note: The balanced composition ensures approximately 50/50 austenite-ferrite microstructure.* --- #### **4. Mechanical Properties** Mechanical properties are determined in the heat-treated condition as required by ASTM A351. **Minimum Required Values (Heat-Treated Condition):** - **Tensile Strength:** 690 MPa (100 ksi) min - **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** 485 MPa (70 ksi) min - **Elongation in 2" (50 mm):** 20% min - **Reduction of Area:** 35% min - **Hardness:** 290 HBW max **Typical Achievable Properties:** - **Tensile Strength:** 760-895 MPa (110-130 ksi) - **Yield Strength:** 550-690 MPa (80-100 ksi) - **Elongation:** 25-30% - **Impact Energy:** 100 J (74 ft-lb) min at room temperature --- #### **5. Physical Properties (Typical Values)** - **Density:** 7.80 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³) - **Modulus of Elasticity:** 186 GPa (27,000 ksi) - **Poisson's Ratio:** 0.27-0.30 - **Thermal Conductivity:** 15.0 W/m·K (at 100°C) - **Specific Heat Capacity:** 500 J/kg·K (at 0-100°C) - **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion:** 13.0 × 10⁻⁶/°C (20-100°C) - **Magnetic Permeability:** Slightly magnetic due to ferritic phase --- #### **6. Heat Treatment** **Standard Heat Treatment:** **Solution Annealing:** - Temperature: 1120-1170°C (2050-2140°F) - Soak time: 1-2 hours per inch of thickness - Cooling: Rapid water quench to preserve duplex structure - Objective: To achieve approximately 50% austenite and 50% ferrite **Important Note:** - Avoid temperatures between 300-1000°C (570-1830°F) to prevent embrittlement - Do not stress relieve at temperatures above 300°C (570°F) --- #### **7. Corrosion Resistance** - **Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking:** Excellent resistance, superior to 300-series austenitic stainless steels - **Pitting and Crevice Corrosion:** Very good resistance due to high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content - **General Corrosion:** Excellent resistance to various acids, including sulfuric and phosphoric acids - **Erosion-Corrosion:** Outstanding performance in high-velocity fluid applications - **Intergranular Corrosion:** Good resistance when properly heat treated --- #### **8. Product Applications** CD4MCu cast stainless steel is widely used in aggressive environments across various industries. **Primary Applications Include:** - **Chemical Processing Equipment:** Reactors, columns, and heat exchangers - **Oil and Gas Industry:** Christmas tree components, valves, and fittings - **Pump Components:** Casings, impellers, and diffusers for corrosive services - **Marine Applications:** Propeller hubs, seawater system components - **Pollution Control Equipment:** Scrubbers, absorbers, and environmental systems - **Pulp and Paper Industry:** Digester and bleaching equipment - **Power Generation:** FGD system components and cooling water systems --- #### **9. Fabrication & Welding Characteristics** **Casting Characteristics:** - Good castability with proper foundry practices - Pattern shrinkage: 20-25 mm/m - Requires careful solidification control - Suitable for complex geometries and heavy sections **Machining:** - More difficult to machine than austenitic stainless steels - Use rigid setups and positive rake tools - Recommended cutting speeds: 15-25 m/min (50-80 SFM) - Adequate cooling essential **Welding:** - **Weldability:** Fair to good with proper procedures - Preheating: Generally not required - Interpass temperature: Max 150°C (300°F) - Filler metals: Over-alloyed duplex or nickel-base electrodes - Post-weld heat treatment: Generally not recommended --- #### **10.
