**Product Name:** AK Steel ASTM A424 Type 1, UNIVIT® DS Enameling Carbon Steel
---
### **1. Overview**
AK Steel's ASTM A424 Type 1, commercialized under the **UNIVIT® DS** brand, is a specialized, very low-carbon steel specifically engineered for high-temperature porcelain enameling applications. The "DS" stands for "Direct Set," indicating its primary use in the single-coat, direct-on enamel process. This steel grade is characterized by its exceptional resistance to enamel defects such as "fishscaling" and "boiling," ensuring a smooth, durable, and defect-free porcelain finish after firing. It is the industry-preferred material for demanding, high-quality appliance and architectural enameling.
### **2. International Standards**
This product is manufactured to meet or exceed the requirements of the following primary standard:
* **ASTM A424 / A424M:** Standard Specification for Steel Sheet for Porcelain Enameling.
* This product specifically conforms to **Type 1**, which is intended for direct-on enameling.
### **3. Chemical Composition (Typical, Key Controlled Elements)**
The composition is meticulously controlled to optimize enameling performance, particularly for the direct-on process.
| Element | Content (Typical Weight %) | Purpose in Enameling |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Carbon (C) | 0.005% max (Ultra-Low) | **Critical.** Minimizes carbon reaction (CO/CO₂ gas evolution) during firing, preventing defects like boiling, blistering, and black specking. |
| Titanium (Ti) | 0.15 - 0.25% | **Critical.** Acts as a strong carbide/nitride former. Stabilizes residual carbon and nitrogen, further preventing fishscaling. Also contributes to strength. |
| Nitrogen (N) | Controlled Low Level | Minimized to prevent strain-age embrittlement and associated fishscaling. |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.25% max | Kept low to aid in cleanliness and consistent enameling response. |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.020% max | Kept very low to promote good weldability and enamel adherence. |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.025% max | Controlled for steel cleanliness. |
| **Note:** | The steel is fully stabilized (Ti-treated) and often supplied in an **Enameling Iron (EI)** quality with extremely low interstitial elements. | |
### **4. Physical & Mechanical Properties (As-Supplied, typically Temper Rolled)**
Properties are tailored for excellent formability prior to enameling.
| Property | Value / Description | Condition / Note |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Yield Strength** | 25 - 35 ksi (170 - 240 MPa) | Typical for temper-rolled (T5) condition. |
| **Tensile Strength** | 40 - 50 ksi (275 - 345 MPa) | Typical for temper-rolled (T5) condition. |
| **Elongation (min)** | 30% - 40% (in 2") | Excellent ductility for deep drawing and severe forming. |
| **Hardness (Rockwell B)** | 45 - 65 HRB | |
| **Primary Crystal Structure** | Ferritic | Non-hardenable, consistent during firing. |
| **Key Enameling Property** | **Fishscale Resistance:** Excellent. Certified to pass standard fishscale tests due to ultra-low carbon and titanium stabilization. | Meets ASTM A424 Type 1 requirements. |
| **Surface Finish** | **Extra Smooth (XS)** or specified enamel-grade finish. Free of imperfections detrimental to enamel appearance. | Critical for direct-on enameling quality. |
### **5. Key Features & Advantages (UNIVIT® DS)**
* **Superior Fishscale Resistance:** The hallmark feature. The titanium-stabilized, ultra-low carbon composition virtually eliminates the risk of fishscaling, the most common and destructive enamel defect.
* **Ideal for Direct-On Enameling:** Engineered specifically for single-coat application, reducing material, labor, and energy costs compared to two-coat systems.
* **Excellent Formability:** Can be deeply drawn, stretched, and formed into complex shapes (e.g., oven cavities, sink bowls, cookware) prior to the enameling process without loss of enameling quality.
* **Consistent Firing Response:** Provides uniform enamel adherence, color, and gloss across the part and from batch to batch.
* **Good Weldability:** Can be welded using standard resistance (spot) welding techniques, important for appliance assembly.
### **6. Product Applications**
This steel is the premium choice for high-end, durable porcelain enameled products.
* **Major Appliances:** Oven and range cavities, broiler drawers, burner caps, cooktop substrates, microwave oven liners.
* **Architectural & Building Products:** Interior and exterior wall panels, cladding, signage, and sanitaryware.
* **Commercial & Residential Enameled Goods:** Cookware (pots, roasters), kitchen sinks, barbecue grills, fireplaces, and heat exchangers.
* **Sanitary and Chemical Applications:** Where a durable, chemically resistant, and easy-to-clean glass surface is required.
### **7. Fabrication & Processing Notes**
* **Forming:** Should be formed in the as-supplied (temper rolled) condition. Severe drawing may require intermediate annealing.
* **Cleaning & Pretreatment:** Must be thoroughly cleaned (alkaline clean, rinse, acid pickle, nickel flash) immediately before enamel application to ensure perfect adherence.
* **Firing:** Typical firing temperatures range from 1450°F to 1550°F (790°C to 845°C). The steel's properties are stable within this range.
* **Welding:** Resistance spot welding is standard. For arc welding, careful procedure development is needed to avoid disturbing the localized chemistry critical for enameling.

For critical applications, always consult the official Technical Data Sheets (TDS) from Cleveland-Cliffs and the relevant ASTM standards for the most current and precise specifications, processing guidelines, and performance guarantees. Enameling results depend on a complete system (steel, pretreatment, enamel slip, firing cycle).
