### **Product Introduction: AISI 1330 Alloy Steel**
**AISI 1330** is a high-quality, medium-carbon manganese alloy steel known for its excellent balance of strength, toughness, and wear resistance. It belongs to the "13xx" series of alloy steels, where the primary alloying element is manganese. This grade is specifically designed to be heat-treated (quenched and tempered) to achieve superior mechanical properties compared to plain carbon steels. It is widely used in applications requiring high strength and good ductility in moderately stressed components.

### **1. Chemical Composition**
The composition is the foundational characteristic of AISI 1330, providing its hardenability and strength potential.
| Element | Content (% by weight) |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | 0.28 - 0.33 |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.60 - 1.90 |
| **Phosphorus (P)** | 0.035 max |
| **Sulfur (S)** | 0.040 max |
| **Silicon (Si)** | 0.15 - 0.35 |
| **Iron (Fe)** | Balance |
**Key Role of Alloying Elements:**
* **Carbon (C):** Provides the primary hardness and strength through the formation of martensite during heat treatment.
* **Manganese (Mn):** The key alloying element. It significantly increases hardenability (depth of hardening), improves strength and wear resistance, and helps deoxidize the steel during melting.
* **Silicon (Si):** Primarily a deoxidizer, it also contributes to strength and hardness.
---
### **2. Physical & Mechanical Properties**
Properties are highly dependent on the heat treatment condition (e.g., annealed, normalized, or quenched & tempered). The following are typical ranges.
**A. Physical Properties (Approximate)**
* **Density:** 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³)
* **Elastic Modulus (Young's Modulus):** 190-210 GPa (29,000-30,500 ksi)
* **Poisson's Ratio:** 0.29
* **Melting Point:** ~ 1515°C (2760°F)
**B. Mechanical Properties (After Quenching & Tempering)**
* **Tensile Strength:** 620 - 850 MPa (90,000 - 123,000 psi)
* **Yield Strength:** 415 - 690 MPa (60,000 - 100,000 psi)
* **Elongation (in 50mm):** 18% - 25%
* **Reduction in Area:** 40% - 55%
* **Hardness (Brinell):** 200 - 300 HB (typical for tempered conditions)
* **Impact Toughness (Charpy V-Notch):** Good to excellent, depending on tempering temperature.
---
### **3. International Standards & Equivalent Grades**
AISI 1330 is primarily a U.S. standard (American Iron and Steel Institute). Equivalent or closely similar grades from other international standards include:
| Standard | Equivalent Grade | Note |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **UNS** | G13300 | Unified Numbering System |
| **ASTM** | A29/A29M (1330) | Standard Specification for Steel Bars, Carbon and Alloy |
| **SAE** | SAE J404, J412, J414 (1330) | SAE Automotive Standard |
| **DIN (Germany)** | 34Mn6 (~) | Close equivalent, slight compositional differences |
| **EN (Europe)** | 1.5060 / 34Mn6 | Designation under EN 10083-3 |
| **JIS (Japan)** | SMn433 (~) | Similar Japanese grade |
---
### **4. Product Applications**
AISI 1330 is supplied in various forms such as **round bars, flat bars, forging billets, and plates**. Its primary applications are in components that are machined and subsequently heat-treated.
**Key Industry Sectors and Components:**
* **Automotive & Transportation:**
* Axle shafts
* Gears (moderately stressed)
* Crankshafts
* Connecting rods
* Clutch components
* **General Manufacturing & Machinery:**
* Bolts, studs, and high-strength fasteners
* Shafts and spindles
* Machine tool parts
* Tie rods and linkage components
* **Oil & Gas:**
* Valve parts
* Pump shafts and components
* **Agricultural Equipment:**
* Drive train components
* Gears and shafts for tractors and harvesters
---
### **5. Heat Treatment & Machinability**
* **Heat Treatment:** AISI 1330 achieves its optimal properties through **quenching and tempering**.
* **Austenitizing:** Heat to approximately 830°C - 850°C (1525°F - 1560°F).
* **Quenching:** Rapidly cool in oil or water (oil quenching is more common to reduce risk of distortion/cracking).
* **Tempering:** Reheat to a temperature between 400°C - 650°C (750°F - 1200°F) to achieve the desired combination of strength, hardness, and toughness.
* **Machinability:** In the annealed or cold-drawn condition, AISI 1330 has a machinability rating of approximately **65%** (compared to 100% for AISI 1212 free-machining steel). It is considered fair to good to machine. Using sharp tools, proper feeds/speeds, and coolants is recommended.
* **Weldability:** Weldability is **fair**. Preheating (150°C - 260°C / 300°F - 500°F) and post-weld stress relieving or heat treatment are often necessary to restore properties and prevent cracking in the heat-affected zone (HAZ), especially for thick sections.
### **Summary**
**AISI 1330** is a versatile and cost-effective medium-carbon manganese alloy steel. Its elevated manganese content provides good hardenability and strength-to-weight ratio, making it a preferred choice for a wide range of forged, machined, and heat-treated components across automotive, industrial, and agricultural sectors. When proper heat treatment protocols are followed, it delivers a reliable performance in demanding mechanical applications.
