### **Product Datasheet: AISI 4130 Alloy Steel (UNS G41300)**
---
#### **1. Overview**
AISI 4130 is a versatile, low-alloy chromium-molybdenum (Cr-Mo) steel renowned for its excellent combination of strength, toughness, weldability, and fatigue resistance. Its relatively low carbon content compared to higher-grade alloys like 4140 provides good formability and weldability while the chromium and molybdenum additions enhance hardenability, strength, and resistance to creep and impact. It is a workhorse material in industries where high strength-to-weight ratio and reliability under dynamic loads are critical.
**Key Characteristics:**
* High Strength-to-Weight Ratio
* Good Toughness and Impact Resistance
* Excellent Weldability (with proper procedure)
* Good Machinability (in annealed condition)
* Responsive to Heat Treatment

#### **7. Product Forms & Key Applications**
AISI 4130 is available in a wide range of forms to suit manufacturing needs.
| Product Form | Typical Applications |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Seamless Tubing** | **Aerospace:** Aircraft engine mounts, landing gear components, hydraulic lines. **Automotive:** Roll cages, chassis tubing, drive shafts. **Industrial:** Hydraulic cylinders, high-pressure systems. |
| **Round & Flat Bars** | **General Engineering:** Shafts, gears, bolts, studs, connecting rods, machinery components. **Oil & Gas:** Tool joints, valve parts. |
| **Sheets & Plates** | **Aerospace:** Structural airframe components, brackets. **Defense:** Armor plating (in processed forms). |
| **Forgings** | High-stress components requiring grain flow integrity (e.g., crankshafts, yoke arms). |
| **Wire** | Springs, fasteners, welding wire. |
---
#### **8. Fabrication & Welding**
* **Machinability:** Good in annealed or normalized condition (~65% of 1212 steel). Hardness should ideally be below 280 HB for optimal machining.
* **Weldability:** **Excellent for a low-alloy steel.** Requires preheating (150-260°C / 300-500°F) for thicker sections and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) to restore toughness in the heat-affected zone (HAZ).
* **Common Methods:** GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), SMAW (Stick). Use compatible low-alloy filler metals (e.g., ER80S-D2, E9018-D2).
* **Formability:** Good in annealed condition. Can be cold formed with appropriate tooling.
---
#### **9. Why Choose AISI 4130?**
* **Proven Performance:** A well-understood and reliable material with decades of service history.
* **Versatility:** Can be tailored from a tough, weldable state to a high-strength state via heat treatment.
* **Favorable Cost/Performance Ratio:** Offers properties superior to plain carbon steels at a reasonable cost premium.
* **Wide Availability:** Readily available in numerous forms and sizes from global suppliers.
**Disclaimer:** This datasheet provides typical information. For critical applications, always consult the relevant material standard, qualified engineers, and perform appropriate testing. Mechanical properties are influenced by processing history, section size, and heat treatment practices.
