AISI 5060 Steel Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Introduction: AISI 5060 Chromium Steel** **AISI 5060** is a medium-carbon, chromium alloy steel known for its excellent strength, good wear resistance, and reliable toughness. As a member of the **50xx** series of chromium steels, it contains a moderate amount of chromium which provides enhanced hardenability, allowing it to be effectively hardened in oil to a greater depth than plain carbon steels. This makes it suitable for manufacturing high-strength components that must withstand heavy loads, impact, and wear. 5060 steel is typically supplied in the annealed or hot-rolled condition, and is designed to be heat-treated (quenched and tempered) to achieve its optimal mechanical properties. It is widely regarded as a versatile and cost-effective engineering steel for demanding applications, offering a favorable balance between performance and processability. --- ### **1. Chemical Composition** The chemical composition provides the foundation for 5060's properties. The key element is chromium, which boosts hardenability and contributes to certain secondary characteristics. | Element | Composition Range (%) | Purpose & Effect | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.56 - 0.64 | Primary hardening element. Provides high strength, hardness, and wear resistance. The carbon content is higher than in 50B50, offering greater ultimate hardness potential. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.75 - 1.00 | Increases hardenability and strength. Aids in deoxidation and improves response to heat treatment. | | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.035 (max) | Impurity. Kept low to prevent cold brittleness. | | **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.040 (max) | Impurity. Typically kept low for better transverse ductility and toughness compared to boron-treated free-machining steels. | | **Chromium (Cr)** | 0.40 - 0.60 | **Key alloying element.** Significantly improves hardenability, allowing thicker sections to harden fully. Also contributes to wear resistance and modestly improves tempering resistance. | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.15 - 0.35 | Primarily a deoxidizer during steelmaking. Provides solid solution strengthening and improves hardenability slightly. | | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Base metal. | --- ### **2. Physical & Mechanical Properties** Properties are highly dependent on the heat treatment condition. **A. In the Annealed Condition (As-Supplied):** * **Hardness:** ~ 200 BHN (Brinell) * **Tensile Strength:** ~ 690 MPa (100 ksi) * **Yield Strength:** ~ 415 MPa (60 ksi) * **Elongation:** ~ 20% * **Machinability:** Fair. Better than many alloy steels but not as good as sulfur-added free-machining grades. **B. After Quenching and Tempering (Example):** * **Typical Process:** Austenitize at ~815-830°C (1500-1525°F), quench in oil, and temper at a selected temperature. * **Resulting Hardness Range:** 40 - 58 HRC (depending on tempering temperature and section size). * **Key Attributes:** Achieves a very high strength-to-weight ratio, good fatigue strength, and a combination of a hard, wear-resistant surface with a tough core when properly heat-treated. --- ### **3. Product Applications** AISI 5060 is selected for components that require high strength, good fatigue life, and durability under stress. * **Automotive:** **Heavy-duty coil springs and leaf springs** (a primary application due to its high elastic limit and good fatigue resistance), torsion bars, stabilizer bars, and clutch springs. * **Industrial Machinery:** Heavy-duty gears, shafts, axles, spindles, and high-strength bolts and fasteners. * **Agricultural Equipment:** Plow beams, cultivator springs, heavy-duty tillage tools, and drive components. * **Hand Tools:** High-quality wrenches, crowbars, and other tools requiring a tough, durable steel. * **Forgings:** Commonly used for drop-forged components like connecting rods, levers, and yokes that undergo subsequent heat treatment. --- ### **4. International Standards & Equivalent Grades** AISI 5060 is a well-established grade with direct equivalents in many international standards. | Standard | Grade Designation | Note | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **SAE / AISI (USA)** | **5060** / **5060H** | The primary standard. An "H" grade (5060H) is available with guaranteed hardenability bands per SAE J1868. | | **UNS** | G50600 | Unified Numbering System code. | | **ASTM** | A322, A304 | Standard specifications for alloy steel bars. | | **DIN / EN (Germany/Europe)** | **1.8159** (56Cr4) | The most common European equivalent (EN 10083-2). Composition is very similar. | | **JIS (Japan)** | **SUP6** | Japanese spring steel grade with a similar composition and application focus. | | **GB (China)** | **56Cr4** / **60Cr4** | Chinese designation, closely aligned with the European standard. | | **ISO** | **56Cr4** | International standard equivalent. | **Key Distinction from Boron Steels:** Unlike the boron-treated 50Bxx series, 5060 relies on chromium for hardenability. This generally results in better through-thickness properties and less sensitivity to certain processing variables, making it preferred for critical spring applications and components where directional properties are important. --- ### **Summary** AISI 5060 is a **versatile and robust chromium alloy steel** valued for its **excellent strength, hardenability, and fatigue resistance**. Its higher carbon content and chromium addition make it particularly well-suited for demanding applications such as **heavy-duty springs, shafts, and forged components**. While not a free-machining steel, its reliable performance and well-understood heat treatment response have solidified its position as a fundamental engineering material across automotive, industrial, and tooling sectors. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 5060 Steel Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <4103 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 5060 Steel Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
