ASTM A209 T1 Alloy Steel, Chromium Molybdenum Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ## **Product Datasheet: ASTM A209 / ASME SA-209 T1 Alloy Steel Tube** **Product Overview** ASTM A209 T1 is a **chromium-molybdenum (Cr-Mo) alloy steel** specifically designed for seamless tubes in high-temperature service, particularly in boiler and superheater applications. As part of the low-alloy steel family, it offers enhanced strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures compared to plain carbon steels like ASTM A178. The addition of molybdenum provides solid solution strengthening and improves resistance to creep deformation, while chromium contributes to oxidation resistance. ASTM A209 T1 is a fundamental alloy for power generation and process industry tubing, operating reliably under high pressure and heat. **Key International Standards** * **Primary Standard:** **ASTM A209 / A209M** - Standard Specification for Seamless Carbon-Molybdenum Alloy-Steel Boiler and Superheater Tubes. * **ASME Designation:** **SA-209 T1** - This is the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) designation, which is identical and mandatory for code-stamped pressure equipment. * **Governing Specification:** This product conforms to the requirements for **Grade T1** within ASTM A209/ASME SA-209. * **Heat Treatment:** Typically supplied in the **normalized** or **normalized and tempered** condition to achieve the required microstructure and mechanical properties. * **Related Standards:** Often compared to **ASTM A335 P1** for pipe, which has similar chemistry. Complies with international standards such as **DIN 17175 15Mo3** and **EN 10216-2 16Mo3**. **Chemical Composition (Weight % - ASTM A209 T1 Requirements)** | Element | ASTM A209 T1 Requirement | Typical Range / Aim | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.10 - 0.20% | 0.15 - 0.18% | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.30 - 0.80% | 0.50 - 0.70% | | **Phosphorus (P)** | 0.025% max | ≤ 0.018% | | **Sulfur (S)** | 0.025% max | ≤ 0.015% | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.10 - 0.50% | 0.15 - 0.35% | | **Chromium (Cr)** | -- | ≤ 0.30% (residual) | | **Molybdenum (Mo)** | **0.44 - 0.65%** | 0.50 - 0.60% | | **Carbon Equivalent (C.E. IIW)** | -- | Typically 0.35 - 0.45 | **Physical & Mechanical Properties (Room Temperature)** | Property | Requirement (ASTM A209 T1) | Typical Performance / Notes | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Tensile Strength** | 55 ksi (380 MPa) min | 60 - 75 ksi (414 - 517 MPa) | | **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 30 ksi (205 MPa) min | 35 - 45 ksi (241 - 310 MPa) | | **Elongation in 2" (Min)** | 30% | 30 - 35% | | **Hardness (Approx.)** | -- | ~140-180 HB | | **Maximum Recommended Metal Temperature (Continuous)** | -- | Up to **~1000°F (538°C)**. Its strength advantage over carbon steel diminishes rapidly above this temperature, where higher alloys (e.g., T11, T22) are used. | | **Key Feature** | **Basic High-Temperature Molybdenum Steel:** Provides a cost-effective step up from carbon steel, offering significantly improved creep strength and microstructural stability (resistance to graphitization) at temperatures where carbon steels become inadequate. | **Product Applications** ASTM A209 T1 tubes are specified for heat transfer surfaces and pressure parts in systems operating at elevated temperatures. * **Boiler Tubes:** Water-wall and generating tubes in industrial boilers operating at higher pressures/temperatures than those suitable for A178. * **Superheater & Reheater Tubes:** Primary and secondary superheater sections in power plant boilers, where steam temperatures are elevated. * **Heat Exchanger Tubes:** For high-temperature shell-and-tube exchangers in refinery and petrochemical services. * **Process Heater Tubes:** Convection and radiant section tubes in direct-fired heaters. * **Steam Piping & Header Systems:** For high-temperature, high-pressure steam lines within its temperature range. **Advantages & Fabrication Notes** * **Good Weldability:** Readily weldable using standard processes (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, SAW). Key practices include: * **Preheat:** Typically **300-400°F (149-204°C)** to prevent hydrogen cracking due to the molybdenum content. * **Low-Hydrogen Practice:** Mandatory. * **Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT):** **Strongly recommended, often required by code** for most applications. PWHT (e.g., 1100-1250°F / 593-677°C) relieves welding stresses and tempers the HAZ to restore toughness and creep resistance. * **Superior Creep Strength:** The molybdenum addition provides solid solution strengthening, delaying creep deformation at temperatures above ~800°F (427°C). * **Resistance to Graphitization:** Molybdenum helps stabilize carbides, preventing the breakdown of pearlite into ferrite and graphite (graphitization), which can weaken the steel during long-term high-temperature exposure. * **Formability:** Can be cold bent, but hot bending is preferred for tight radii or heavy wall tubes, followed by a full normalization and tempering heat treatment. * **Code Compliance:** Fully recognized in the **ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section I** (Power Boilers) and **Section VIII** (Pressure Vessels) with published allowable stresses up to 1000°F. **Disclaimer:** This datasheet provides general information on **ASTM A209 T1 / SA-209 T1** alloy steel tubes. For procurement, specify the complete standard and grade (A209 T1). Critical application details include dimensions, heat treatment condition, and required NDE (non-destructive examination). **Design must be based on ASME BPVC allowable stress values for the specific design temperature.** Welding procedure specifications (WPS) must be qualified per ASME Section IX. Material selection and fabrication for pressure equipment must be overseen by qualified personnel in accordance with the applicable construction code. This material is not intended for low-temperature or corrosion-resistant service without proper evaluation. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ASTM A209 T1 Alloy Steel, Chromium Molybdenum Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <4695 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ASTM A209 T1 Alloy Steel, Chromium Molybdenum Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
