## **Product Datasheet: ASTM A213 T5 / 5Cr-0.5Mo Alloy Steel Tube (STBA 25)**
**Product Overview**
ASTM A213 T5, commercially known as **5Cr-0.5Mo** steel, is a **medium-chromium alloy steel** seamless tube specifically engineered for service in highly **oxidizing and sulfidizing atmospheres** at elevated temperatures. With a nominal composition of 5% chromium and 0.5% molybdenum, this grade bridges the performance gap between the lower Cr-Mo steels (T22, 2.25Cr-1Mo) and the higher chromium, ferritic stainless steels. Its primary advantage is significantly improved **resistance to oxidation, hot corrosion (sulfidation), and steam-side exfoliation** compared to T22, while maintaining better thermal conductivity and lower thermal expansion than austenitic stainless steels. It is a critical material for superheater and reheater sections in boilers burning corrosive fuels and for process heater tubes in severe refinery service. Its Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) designation is **STBA 25**.
**Key International Standards**
* **Primary Standard:** **ASTM A213 / A213M** - Standard Specification for Seamless Ferritic and Austenitic Alloy-Steel Boiler, Superheater, and Heat-Exchanger Tubes.
* **Governing Specification:** This product conforms to the requirements for **Grade T5** within ASTM A213.
* **ASME Designation:** **SA-213 T5** - The mandatory ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) designation.
* **Commercial/Alternate Designations:**
* **5Cr-0.5Mo** (Common industry name)
* **JIS G 3462 STBA 25** (Japanese Standard)
* **DIN 17175 12CrMo195**
* **Heat Treatment:** Supplied in the **annealed or normalized and tempered** condition to ensure a soft, ductile, and stable microstructure.
**Chemical Composition (Weight % - ASTM A213 T5 Requirements)**
| Element | ASTM A213 T5 Requirement | Typical Range / Aim (STBA 25) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | 0.15% max | 0.08 - 0.12% |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.30 - 0.60% | 0.40 - 0.60% |
| **Phosphorus (P)** | 0.025% max | ≤ 0.020% |
| **Sulfur (S)** | 0.025% max | ≤ 0.015% |
| **Silicon (Si)** | 0.50% max | 0.25 - 0.50% |
| **Chromium (Cr)** | **4.00 - 6.00%** | 4.50 - 5.50% |
| **Molybdenum (Mo)** | **0.45 - 0.65%** | 0.45 - 0.60% |
| **Carbon Equivalent (C.E. IIW)** | -- | Typically 0.50 - 0.60 |
**Physical & Mechanical Properties (Room Temperature)**
| Property | Requirement (ASTM A213 T5) | Typical Performance / Notes |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Tensile Strength** | 60 ksi (415 MPa) min | 65 - 85 ksi (448 - 586 MPa) |
| **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 30 ksi (205 MPa) min | 35 - 50 ksi (241 - 345 MPa) |
| **Elongation in 2" (Min)** | 30% | 30 - 35% |
| **Hardness (Approx., HB)** | -- | ~150-200 HB |
| **Maximum Recommended Metal Temperature** | -- | **Up to ~1200°F (649°C)** for prolonged service. The 5% Cr provides a step-change in oxidation and corrosion resistance, making it suitable for environments where T22 would suffer excessive scaling or sulfidation. |
| **Key Feature** | **Corrosion-Resistant Elevated Temperature Alloy:** Provides a cost-effective solution for high-temperature tubing in corrosive environments where austenitic stainless steels are over-specified or problematic due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) or thermal expansion issues. |
**Product Applications**
ASTM A213 T5 / STBA 25 tubes are specified for heat transfer services where high-temperature corrosion is the primary life-limiting factor.
* **Superheater & Reheater Tubes:** In boilers firing **high-sulfur coal**, **biomass**, **waste**, or **heavy oil** where sulfidation and oxidation are accelerated.
* **Process Heater Tubes:** In refinery heaters processing **high-sulfur crudes** or where combustion gases are corrosive (e.g., coker heaters, vacuum heaters).
* **Catalytic Reformer Heater Tubes:** Where both high temperature and some sulfur resistance are required.
* **Steam Methane Reformer (SMR) Tubes:** For certain sections exposed to less severe process conditions.
* **Heat Exchanger Tubes** in high-temperature corrosive gas services.
**Advantages & Fabrication Notes**
* **Challenging Welding Requirements:** The higher chromium content increases hardenability and the risk of cold cracking. Welding requires strict procedure control.
* **Preheat:** Mandatory, typically **400-550°F (204-288°C)**.
* **Low-Hydrogen Practice:** Essential. Matching filler metals (e.g., AWS ER502, E502-XX) are used.
* **Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT):** **Always required.** Standard range is **1350-1450°F (732-788°C)**. **Slow cooling is necessary to prevent excessive hardening and cracking.**
* **Superior Oxidation & Sulfidation Resistance:** The ~5% Cr content forms a dense, chromium-rich oxide scale that is much more protective against both oxygen and sulfur penetration than scales formed on lower-chromium steels.
* **Good Creep Strength:** The molybdenum addition provides reasonable creep resistance, though generally lower than that of T22 (2.25Cr-1Mo) at very high stress levels.
* **Thermal Fatigue Resistance:** Its thermal expansion coefficient is closer to that of carbon steel than austenitic stainless steels, reducing thermal stress in systems with temperature cycling.
* **Code Compliance:** Fully recognized in the **ASME BPVC, Section I** and **Section VIII**, with published allowable stresses up to 1200°F (649°C).
**Disclaimer:**
This datasheet provides general information on **ASTM A213 T5 (5Cr-0.5Mo) / STBA 25** alloy steel tubes. For procurement, specify the complete standard and grade (T5). **Design must be based on ASME BPVC allowable stress values.** Welding and PWHT require qualified procedures per ASME Section IX. Due to its air-hardening tendency, uncontrolled cooling after welding or PWHT can lead to brittle, crack-prone structures. Material selection should be based on a detailed analysis of the service environment (fuel/process gas composition, metal temperature). It is not a direct replacement for T22 in high-stress creep applications but is superior in corrosive atmospheres. Fabrication should be overseen by personnel experienced with medium-chromium alloy steels.
