ASTM A285, Grade A Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Datasheet: ASTM A285 Grade A Low and Intermediate Tensile Strength Carbon Steel Plate** #### **Product Overview** ASTM A285 Grade A is a low to intermediate tensile strength carbon steel plate specifically designed for fusion-welded pressure vessels. It is a cost-effective and widely used material for applications involving moderate temperatures and pressures. Its primary advantages are good formability, ease of welding, and reliable performance in non-severe service environments. Grade A is the lowest strength grade within the A285 specification, making it suitable for a broad range of general-purpose pressure containers. **Key Advantages:** * **Cost-Effective:** An economical choice for many pressure vessel applications. * **Excellent Formability:** Can be readily cold-formed into shapes such as heads and shells. * **Good Weldability:** Well-suited for all common welding methods with minimal preheat requirements. * **Proven Reliability:** A long-standing, widely accepted material standard for pressure containment. --- #### **International Standard** The manufacturing and testing of this product are strictly in accordance with the latest version of: * **ASTM A285 / A285M:** Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, Low- and Intermediate-Tensile Strength. This standard ensures the material is suitable for the construction of welded pressure vessels. --- #### **Chemical Composition (Heat Analysis, %)** The chemical composition is controlled to provide the desired mechanical properties and weldability. | Element | Content (%) | | :--- | :--- | | Carbon (C), max | 0.17 | | Manganese (Mn), max | 0.90 | | Phosphorus (P), max | 0.035 | | Sulfur (S), max | 0.04 | | Silicon (Si) | ≤ 0.40 (Note: Killed steel is typically required, which implies a minimum Si content for deoxidation) | --- #### **Mechanical Properties** Mechanical properties are guaranteed through testing of the plate material. | Property | Value | Unit | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Tensile Strength** | 310 - 415 | MPa (45 - 60 ksi) | | **Yield Strength (min)** | 165 | MPa (24 ksi) | | **Elongation in 2 in (50 mm) (min)** | 28 | % | | *(Elongation requirement varies with plate thickness; the value shown is for the thickest plates.)* | | | --- #### **Physical Properties (Typical Values)** * **Density:** 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³) * **Modulus of Elasticity:** 200 GPa (29,000 ksi) * **Poisson's Ratio:** 0.29 * **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion:** 11.5 x 10⁻⁶/°C (20-100°C) --- #### **Product Applications** ASTM A285 Grade A is exclusively used for the construction of pressure vessels and components operating at ambient and moderate temperatures. * **Storage Tanks:** Water storage tanks, oil storage tanks, and other low-pressure liquid containers. * **Air Receivers:** Tanks for storing compressed air in industrial systems. * **Heat Exchangers & Vessel Shells:** For services involving low-pressure steam, water, and oil. * **Boiler Components:** Non-critical parts of boiler systems. * **Fired and Unfired Pressure Vessels:** Where design conditions permit the use of lower strength materials. --- #### **Fabrication & Welding Notes** * **Welding:** ASTM A285 Grade A exhibits excellent weldability due to its low carbon content. Standard welding processes such as Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), and Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) are commonly used. While preheating is generally not required for thin plates, it is good practice to follow a qualified Welding Procedure Specification (WPS). * **Forming:** Its good ductility makes it ideal for cold forming operations, including rolling and pressing. * **Hot Forming:** If hot-formed, subsequent normalization may be required to restore grain structure and properties. --- #### **Important Limitations & Considerations** * **Temperature Limitation:** This grade is **not** intended for use in high-temperature service (typically above 425°C / 800°F) where creep resistance is a concern, nor for low-temperature service where impact toughness is critical. * **Strength:** It is the lowest strength grade in the A285 series. For higher pressure applications, Grades B and C should be considered. * **Code Compliance:** This material is recognized by the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code under the identical SA-285 specification for code-stamped vessels. --- **Disclaimer:** This datasheet is for informational purposes only. The information provided is typical and should not be used for design or specification purposes. Always consult the official ASTM A285 standard, the applicable pressure vessel code (e.g., ASME BPVC), and your steel supplier for the most accurate and project-specific data. Proper design by a qualified engineer is essential for all pressure vessel applications. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ASTM A285, Grade A Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <4156 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ASTM A285, Grade A Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
