### **ASTM A533 Grade A Class 3: High-Strength Quenched and Tempered Alloy Steel Plate**
#### **1. Overview**
ASTM A533 Grade A Class 3 represents the **highest strength level** within the Grade A classification of ASTM A533 specification for pressure vessel plates. This class provides **maximum strength** while maintaining adequate toughness for critical applications, particularly in **heavy-wall pressure vessels** where weight reduction and high pressure containment are essential design considerations. The material is supplied in quenched and tempered condition to achieve its superior mechanical properties.
#### **2. Chemical Composition**
The chemical composition matches other Grade A classes but is processed to achieve higher strength:
| Element | Composition (%) |
|---------|-----------------|
| Carbon (C) | 0.25 max |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.95 - 1.30 |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.035 max |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.035 max |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.15 - 0.40 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 0.70 - 1.00 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.45 - 0.60 |
**Heat Treatment Requirements:**
- **Quenching:** Rapid cooling from austenitizing temperature
- **Tempering:** Typically at lower temperatures than Class 1 and 2
- **Grain Size:** Fine austenitic grain size 5 or finer required
#### **3. Physical & Mechanical Properties**
**Mechanical Properties (Up to 2½ inches / 63 mm thickness):**
| Property | Requirement |
|----------|-------------|
| **Tensile Strength** | 100 - 115 ksi (690 - 795 MPa) |
| **Yield Strength** | 85 ksi min (585 MPa min) |
| **Elongation in 2 inches** | 14% min |
| **Reduction of Area** | 35% min |
| **Charpy V-Notch Impact** | 35 ft-lb min at -75°F (-60°C) |
**Thickness Limitations and Property Adjustment:**
- Maximum thickness: 12 inches (305 mm)
- Properties decrease with increasing thickness
- For thickness 2½-4 inches: Yield strength min 80 ksi (550 MPa)
- For thickness 4-6 inches: Yield strength min 75 ksi (515 MPa)
**Physical Properties (Typical):**
- **Density:** 0.284 lb/in³ (7,850 kg/m³)
- **Modulus of Elasticity:** 29,000 ksi (200 GPa)
- **Poisson's Ratio:** 0.29
- **Thermal Expansion:** 6.3 × 10⁻⁶/°F (11.3 × 10⁻⁶/°C) at 68-212°F
#### **4. Product Applications**
ASTM A533 Grade A Class 3 is specified for the most demanding applications where maximum strength is required:
**Nuclear Power Industry:**
- Reactor pressure vessel shells
- Closure heads and flanges
- Steam generator components
- Pressurizer shells
**Petrochemical Industry:**
- Heavy-wall hydrocracking reactors
- High-pressure synthesis converters
- Large-diameter high-pressure vessels
- Critical heat exchangers
**Special Applications:**
- High-pressure gas storage systems
- Research reactor components
- Special military applications
- Advanced energy systems
#### **5. International Standards & Equivalents**
| Region/Country | Standard | Equivalent Grade | Notes |
|----------------|----------|------------------|-------|
| **International** | **ISO 9328-2** | 13MnNiMo5-6 | Higher strength equivalent |
| **Europe** | **EN 10028-2** | 13MnNiMo5-6 | Similar strength level |
| **Japan** | **JIS G3120** | SOV 3A | Comparable nuclear grade |
| **Germany** | **AD 2000** | 13MnNiMo54 | Pressure vessel standard |
**Mechanical Property Comparison by Class:**
| Property | Class 1 | Class 2 | Class 3 |
|----------|---------|---------|---------|
| **Yield Strength Min** | 50 ksi | 70 ksi | 85 ksi |
| **Tensile Range** | 80-100 ksi | 90-110 ksi | 100-115 ksi |
| **Elongation Min** | 18% | 16% | 14% |
#### **6. Fabrication & Welding Considerations**
**Welding Requirements:**
- **Pre-heating:** 300-400°F (150-200°C) minimum
- **Interpass temperature:** 400-600°F (200-315°C)
- **Post-weld heat treatment:** 1100-1150°F (595-620°C)
- **Electrode type:** Low-hydrogen, high-toughness grades
**Special Fabrication Considerations:**
- **Forming:** May require hot forming due to high strength
- **Machining:** Requires appropriate tooling and techniques
- **Heat treatment control:** Critical for maintaining properties
- **Repair welding:** Strict procedure control required
**Quality Assurance Requirements:**
- **Ultrasonic examination:** Mandatory for critical applications
- **Impact test frequency:** Increased for thick sections
- **Tensile testing:** Multiple orientations for anisotropic assessment
- **Hardness survey:** Often required in HAZ regions
---
**Key Design Considerations:**
- **Strength-toughness balance** at design temperature
- **Fracture mechanics analysis** for critical applications
- **Environmental effects** on material performance
- **Fatigue and creep behavior** for cyclic service
**Nuclear Application Notes:**
- **Radiation embrittlement** monitoring required
- **Surveillance programs** for life extension
- **Fabrication per ASME Section III**
- **Enhanced NDE requirements**
**Disclaimer:** This information is for reference purposes. For nuclear and other critical applications, consult the latest ASTM A533 standard and applicable construction codes. Material selection and fabrication procedures must be approved by qualified engineers and regulatory bodies.
