## **Product Datasheet: Bethlehem Steel ASTM A871 Grade 65 Steel Plate**
**Product Overview**
Bethlehem Steel ASTM A871 Grade 65 is a premium **quenched and tempered (Q&T) high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) structural steel plate** engineered for applications demanding both **high strength** and **superior atmospheric corrosion resistance**. As part of the ASTM A871 family of weathering Q&T steels, this grade is specifically heat-treated to achieve a fine-grained tempered martensitic/bainitic microstructure, providing an excellent balance of **65 ksi minimum yield strength**, exceptional low-temperature toughness, and good fatigue resistance. Its alloy composition, rich in chromium, copper, and nickel, promotes the formation of a dense, protective rust patina that retards further corrosion, offering approximately **two times the corrosion resistance of plain carbon steel**. This plate is available in thicknesses from **3/16 inch (4.8 mm) to 4 inches (101.6 mm)**.
**Key International Standards**
* **Primary Standard:** **ASTM A871 / A871M** - Standard Specification for High-Strength Low-Alloy Structural Steel Plate with Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance.
* **Governing Specification:** This product conforms to all requirements for **Grade 65** as defined in ASTM A871, representing the mid-to-high strength tier within this weathering Q&T series.
* **Heat Treatment Condition:** Supplied in the **quenched and tempered (Q&T) condition**. This process is critical for developing the high strength-toughness combination.
* **Corrosion Resistance:** Certified to provide a minimum atmospheric corrosion resistance **twice that of plain carbon steel (ASTM A36)** when exposed to the atmosphere, based on standardized testing protocols.
* **Supplementary Requirements:** Essential for ensuring performance, particularly in thick sections:
* **ASTM A6 S1 (Charpy V-Notch Impact Testing):** Typically specified with guaranteed energy absorption at low temperatures (e.g., -50°F / -46°C). For plates >1.5", testing is performed at the **quarter-thickness (T/4)** location.
* **ASTM A6 S4 (Ultrasonic Examination):** Often required for plates over 1 inch thick to ensure internal soundness.
* **ASTM A6 S5 (Maximum Carbon Equivalent):** Used to control weldability.
**Chemical Composition (Weight % - ASTM A871 Grade 65 Requirements)**
The chemistry is optimized for hardenability, corrosion resistance, and weldability. Phosphorus and sulfur are maintained at low levels.
| Element | ASTM A871 Grade 65 Requirement (Max, unless noted) | Typical Bethlehem Steel Range |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | 0.20% | 0.14 - 0.18% |

| **Carbon Equivalent (C.E. IIW)** | Not specified | Typically 0.44 - 0.52 |
**Physical & Mechanical Properties**
*Note: For plates over 1.5 inches thick, the standard permits a slight reduction in tensile strength and elongation requirements. Properties for thick plate are verified at the T/4 location.*
| Property | Requirement (ASTM A871 Grade 65) | Typical Performance / Notes |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Yield Strength (Min)** | 65 ksi (450 MPa) | 70 - 80 ksi (483 - 552 MPa) for thinner plates; 65 - 75 ksi for thicker plates (at T/4). |
| **Tensile Strength** | 80 ksi (550 MPa) Min | 85 - 95 ksi (586 - 655 MPa) |
| **Elongation in 2" (Min)** | 17% (for plates ≤ 3/4") | Typically 18-22% |
| **Charpy V-Notch Toughness (As-Q&T)** | Excellent; Often specified ≥ 30 ft-lb @ -50°F (-46°C). | The Q&T process yields superior low-temperature toughness compared to as-rolled weathering steels, a critical advantage for structural integrity. |
| **Modulus of Elasticity** | ~29,000 ksi (200 GPa) | ~29,000 ksi (200 GPa) |
| **Density** | ~0.284 lb/in³ (7.85 g/cm³) | ~0.284 lb/in³ (7.85 g/cm³) |
| **Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance** | **Approximately 2x that of plain carbon steel (A36).** | Forms a stable, adherent protective oxide layer (patina), enabling a maintenance-free, aesthetically pleasing finish for exposed structures. |
| **Key Feature** | **Optimized Strength-Toughness-Weathering Balance:** Delivers a higher strength level (65 ksi) than many standard weathering steels while maintaining the excellent toughness of Q&T processing and the long-term corrosion resistance of a weathering grade. |
**Product Applications**
ASTM A871 Grade 65 is specified for demanding exposed structural applications where increased load capacity, superior fracture resistance, and long-term durability without protective coatings are required.
* **High-Load & Long-Span Bridges:** Girders, arch ribs, and fracture-critical tension members in bridges where weight reduction and high strength are crucial for span capability.
* **Offshore & Marine Topside Structures:** Modules, crane pedestals, and helidecks on platforms where weight savings reduce deck loading and corrosion resistance lowers maintenance.
* **Heavy-Duty Transmission & Communication Structures:** Lattice masts and poles for high-voltage lines or heavy antenna arrays.
* **Seismic-Resistant Building Frames:** Exposed moment frames, braced frames, and diagrids in aggressive urban or coastal atmospheres where both seismic performance and durability are key.
* **Heavy Mining & Construction Equipment:** Booms, arms, and main frames for large excavators and cranes operating in exposed, corrosive outdoor environments.
**Advantages & Fabrication Notes**
* **Enhanced Structural Efficiency:** The 65 ksi yield strength allows for more efficient, lighter designs compared to 50 ksi weathering steels, reducing material tonnage and foundation loads.
* **Superior Toughness & Fatigue Life:** The Q&T microstructure provides excellent resistance to brittle fracture and fatigue crack initiation, essential for structures subject to dynamic or impact loading.
* **Controlled Weldability:** Weldable using established low-hydrogen procedures, but requires strict controls:
* **Preheat/Interpass Temperature:** Typically 300-400°F (149-204°C), dependent on thickness and CE.
* **Heat Input Management:** To preserve Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) toughness.
* **Potential for Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT):** Often recommended for thick-section welds to relieve residual stresses.
* **Sustainability & Lifecycle Benefits:** Eliminates the recurring environmental and financial costs of painting over the structure's lifespan.
* **Formability:** Limited cold formability; any hot-forming necessitates subsequent full re-heat treatment.
* **Environmental Considerations:** Requires atmospheric exposure to form the patina. **Not suitable** for continuous immersion, saltwater splash zones, or highly polluted industrial atmospheres.
* **Legacy Product Note:** Bethlehem Steel was a premier producer of this advanced material. Modern equivalents are readily available as **ASTM A871 Grade 65** from contemporary mills. It is a direct competitor to **ASTM A852 (70 ksi)** and a superior performance alternative to **ASTM A588 (as-rolled, 50 ksi)**.
**Disclaimer:**
This datasheet describes the historical **Bethlehem Steel** product meeting **ASTM A871 Grade 65**. For current procurement, specify **ASTM A871 Grade 65** along with all necessary supplementary requirements (impact test temperature/energy, UT level, max CE). Fabricators must be qualified in welding quenched and tempered steels, and procedures must be qualified on representative material. The project specification must address environmental suitability, fabrication thermal controls, and detailing for proper patina formation and water drainage. The Mill Test Certificate will verify the Q&T condition, chemistry, and mechanical properties from the appropriate test location.
