Cast Stainless Steel CF3, ASTM A743 Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Datasheet: Cast Stainless Steel CF3, ASTM A743** #### **1. Product Overview** Cast Stainless Steel CF3 under ASTM A743 specification is an austenitic stainless steel that represents the cast equivalent of wrought grade 304L stainless steel. This low-carbon chromium-nickel alloy offers excellent corrosion resistance, good mechanical properties, and superior weldability. The low carbon content (0.03% max) minimizes carbide precipitation during welding and heat treatment, making it particularly suitable for applications where intergranular corrosion must be avoided. **Key Advantages:** - **Excellent Corrosion Resistance:** Superior performance in various corrosive environments - **Low Carbon Content:** Minimizes carbide precipitation and susceptibility to intergranular corrosion - **Good Mechanical Properties:** Balanced combination of strength and ductility - **Excellent Weldability:** Can be welded without post-weld heat treatment - **Good Fabricability:** Easy to cast, machine, and form --- #### **2. International Standard** This product conforms to the latest edition of: - **ASTM A743/A743M:** Standard Specification for Castings, Iron-Chromium, Iron-Chromium-Nickel, and Nickel-Base Corrosion-Resistant Alloys for General Application Additional applicable standards: - **UNS J92500:** Unified Numbering System designation - **ASME SA743:** ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code equivalent - **ISO 11972:** Corrosion-resistant cast steels for general applications - **EN 10283:** Corrosion resistant steel castings --- #### **3. Chemical Composition (Heat Analysis, %)** The chemical composition is controlled to ensure optimal corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. | Element | Composition (%) | |---------|-----------------| | Carbon (C) | 0.03 max | | Manganese (Mn) | 1.50 max | | Silicon (Si) | 2.00 max | | Phosphorus (P), max | 0.04 | | Sulfur (S), max | 0.04 | | Chromium (Cr) | 17.0-21.0 | | Nickel (Ni) | 8.0-12.0 | *Note: The composition may include residual elements within specified limits.* --- #### **4. Mechanical Properties** Mechanical properties are determined in the heat-treated condition as required by ASTM A743. **Minimum Required Values (Heat-Treated Condition):** - **Tensile Strength:** 485 MPa (70 ksi) min - **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** 205 MPa (30 ksi) min - **Elongation in 2" (50 mm):** 35% min - **Reduction of Area:** 50% min **Typical Achievable Properties:** - **Tensile Strength:** 515-655 MPa (75-95 ksi) - **Yield Strength:** 240-345 MPa (35-50 ksi) - **Elongation:** 40-55% - **Hardness:** 140-170 HBW --- #### **5. Physical Properties (Typical Values)** - **Density:** 7.90 g/cm³ (0.285 lb/in³) - **Modulus of Elasticity:** 193 GPa (28,000 ksi) - **Poisson's Ratio:** 0.27-0.30 - **Thermal Conductivity:** 16.2 W/m·K (at 100°C) - **Specific Heat Capacity:** 500 J/kg·K (at 0-100°C) - **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion:** 16.5 × 10⁻⁶/°C (20-100°C) - **Magnetic Permeability:** Essentially non-magnetic when annealed --- #### **6. Heat Treatment** **Solution Annealing Treatment:** - **Temperature:** 1040-1120°C (1900-2050°F) - **Soak Time:** 1 hour per inch of thickness, minimum 30 minutes - **Cooling:** Rapid water quench or rapid air cool - **Objective:** To dissolve carbides and achieve homogeneous austenitic structure **Important Notes:** - Rapid cooling through the 425-815°C (800-1500°F) range is essential - Prevents chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries - No precipitation hardening response --- #### **7. Corrosion Resistance** CF3 offers excellent corrosion resistance in various environments: - **Atmospheric Corrosion:** Excellent resistance to rural, urban, and industrial atmospheres - **Fresh Water:** Very good resistance to potable water and steam - **Chemical Media:** - Excellent resistance to most organic chemicals - Good resistance to many inorganic chemicals - Good oxidizing acid resistance - **Intergranular Corrosion:** Excellent resistance due to low carbon content - **Pitting and Crevice Corrosion:** Moderate resistance in chloride environments --- #### **8. Product Applications** CF3 cast stainless steel is widely used in various industries requiring good corrosion resistance: **Primary Applications Include:** - **Chemical Processing Equipment:** Tanks, reactors, and mixing vessels - **Food and Beverage Industry:** Processing equipment, storage tanks, and piping - **Pharmaceutical Industry:** Process vessels and fluid handling systems - **Pulp and Paper Industry:** Bleaching equipment and chemical recovery systems - **Water Treatment:** Filtration systems and water handling components - **Architectural Applications:** Decorative castings and structural components - **Marine Applications:** Pump components and seawater handling systems --- #### **9. Fabrication & Welding Characteristics** **Casting Characteristics:** - Excellent castability with good fluidity - Pattern shrinkage: 20-25 mm/m - Low hot tearing tendency - Suitable for complex geometries and thin sections **Machining:** - Good machinability in annealed condition - Work hardens rapidly during machining - Use positive rake tools and rigid setups - Recommended cutting speeds: 20-35 m/min (65-115 SFM) **Welding:** - **Weldability:** Excellent - Preheating: Generally not required - Post-weld heat treatment: Not required - Filler metals: E308L or similar low-carbon grades - Maintain low interpass temperatures --- #### **10. Quality Assurance & Testing** - **Chemical Analysis:** Per ASTM A751 requirements - **Mechanical Testing:** Tensile tests per ASTM A370 - **Hardness Testing:** Brinell or Rockwell methods - **Non-Destructive Testing:** - Radiographic examination per ASTM E94 - Liquid penetrant examination per ASTM E165 - Magnetic particle examination per ASTM E709 (limited applicability) - **Corrosion Testing:** Optional per customer requirements - **Certification:** Full traceability with comprehensive mill test certificates --- **Disclaimer:** This technical datasheet provides general information for reference purposes only.
