Cast Stainless Steel 440A, ASTM A276, Hot Formed Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Datasheet: Cast Stainless Steel 440A (ASTM A276), Hot Formed** #### **1. Product Overview** Cast Stainless Steel 440A is a martensitic stainless steel that combines good corrosion resistance with high strength and wear resistance. When supplied under ASTM A276 as a hot-formed product, it undergoes controlled thermal mechanical processing to refine its microstructure and enhance mechanical properties. This material is heat-treatable and can be hardened to achieve various strength and hardness levels, making it suitable for applications requiring durability and moderate corrosion resistance. **Key Advantages:** - **Good Corrosion Resistance:** Superior to most carbon steels in corrosive environments - **High Strength Capability:** Can be heat treated to achieve high strength and hardness - **Excellent Wear Resistance:** Suitable for applications involving friction and abrasion - **Good Magnetic Response:** Exhibits magnetic properties in hardened condition - **Machinability:** Can be machined in annealed condition with proper techniques --- #### **2. International Standard** This product conforms to the latest edition of: - **ASTM A276/A276M:** Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Bars and Shapes Note: While 440A is typically associated with ASTM A276 for wrought products, cast equivalents would normally fall under ASTM A743 or A296. The hot forming process follows ASTM A276 requirements for stainless steel bars. --- #### **3. Chemical Composition (Heat Analysis, %)** The chemical composition is carefully balanced to achieve the desired martensitic structure and hardening response. | Element | Composition (%) | |---------|-----------------| | Carbon (C) | 0.60-0.75 | | Manganese (Mn), max | 1.00 | | Silicon (Si), max | 1.00 | | Phosphorus (P), max | 0.04 | | Sulfur (S), max | 0.03 | | Chromium (Cr) | 16.00-18.00 | *Note: The composition may include small amounts of other elements to enhance specific properties.* --- #### **4. Mechanical Properties** Mechanical properties vary significantly with heat treatment condition. **Annealed Condition:** - **Tensile Strength:** 690 MPa (100 ksi) min - **Yield Strength:** 450 MPa (65 ksi) min - **Elongation:** 15% min - **Hardness:** 255 HBW max **Hardened and Tempered Condition:** - **Tensile Strength:** 1650-2250 MPa (240-325 ksi) - **Yield Strength:** 1400 MPa (200 ksi) min - **Elongation:** 5% min - **Hardness:** 54-57 HRC --- #### **5. Physical Properties (Typical Values)** - **Density:** 7.78 g/cm³ (0.281 lb/in³) - **Modulus of Elasticity:** 200 GPa (29,000 ksi) - **Poisson's Ratio:** 0.27-0.30 - **Thermal Conductivity:** 24.2 W/m·K (at 100°C) - **Specific Heat Capacity:** 460 J/kg·K (at 0-100°C) - **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion:** 10.2 × 10⁻⁶/°C (20-100°C) - **Magnetic Permeability:** Magnetic in all conditions --- #### **6. Heat Treatment** **Annealing:** - Heat to 815-870°C (1500-1600°F) - Slow furnace cool at 28°C/h (50°F/h) to 600°C (1100°F) - Air cool to room temperature **Hardening:** - Austenitize at 1010-1065°C (1850-1950°F) - Quench in oil or air - Temper immediately after quenching **Tempering:** - Typical tempering range: 150-370°C (300-700°F) - Higher tempering temperatures reduce hardness but increase toughness --- #### **7. Product Applications** Cast Stainless Steel 440A (hot formed) is used in applications requiring good corrosion resistance combined with high strength and wear resistance. **Primary Applications Include:** - **Cutting Tools:** Surgical instruments, knives, and cutting blades - **Bearing Components:** Ball bearings, roller bearings, and bearing races - **Valve Components:** Valve seats, stems, and trim parts - **Pump Parts:** Shafts, sleeves, and wear rings - **Mold Tools:** Plastic mold components requiring corrosion resistance - **Food Processing Equipment:** Components requiring wear resistance and cleanability --- #### **8. Fabrication & Welding Characteristics** **Machining:** - Best machined in annealed condition - Use positive rake angles and rigid setups - Adequate cooling and lubrication required - Hardened condition requires grinding or EDM **Welding:** - **Weldability:** Fair (requires precautions) - Preheating: 200-300°C (400-600°F) - Post-weld heat treatment essential - Use matching or austenitic filler metals - Low heat input techniques recommended **Hot Working:** - Forging temperature: 1050-1150°C (1920-2100°F) - Do not forge below 950°C (1750°F) - Anneal after hot working --- #### **9. Corrosion Resistance** - **Atmospheric:** Good resistance to rural, urban, and mild industrial atmospheres - **Fresh Water:** Excellent resistance to fresh water and steam - **Chemical:** Moderate resistance to mild chemicals and food products - **Marine:** Limited resistance to marine environments - **Heat Treatment Effect:** Optimal corrosion resistance achieved by proper hardening and tempering --- #### **10. Quality Assurance & Testing** - **Chemical Analysis:** Ladle and product analysis - **Mechanical Testing:** Tensile, hardness, and impact tests - **Non-Destructive Testing:** Liquid penetrant or magnetic particle inspection - **Microstructure Examination:** Grain size and inclusion rating - **Certification:** Mill test certificate to ASTM A276 requirements --- **Disclaimer:** This technical datasheet provides general information for reference purposes only. The properties and performance characteristics may vary based on specific manufacturing processes, heat treatment, and service conditions. Always consult the complete ASTM standards and qualified materials engineers for critical applications.
