# **Latrobe LSS™ A2 Tool Steel (ASTM A2)**
## **Product Overview**
Latrobe LSS™ A2 is a premium air-hardening, medium-alloy cold work tool steel that sets the industry standard for dimensional stability and balanced performance. Conforming to the ASTM A2 specification, it offers an optimal combination of **good wear resistance, high compressive strength, and minimal distortion during heat treatment**. Its excellent through-hardening characteristics make it a versatile and reliable choice for a wide range of precision tooling applications where close tolerances and predictable performance are critical.
## **Key Features & Benefits**
* **Excellent Dimensional Stability:** As an air-hardening grade, LSS™ A2 undergoes minimal size change and distortion during quenching compared to oil-hardening steels, making it ideal for complex tools and precision gauges.
* **Good Wear Resistance:** Provides superior wear resistance to O1 and comparable grades, due to its higher chromium and carbon content, resulting in extended tool life in abrasive applications.
* **Good Toughness:** Offers a better balance of toughness and wear resistance than higher-carbon, high-chromium grades like D2, reducing the risk of chipping in applications with moderate impact.
* **Deep Hardenability:** Can be through-hardened in thicker sections with simple air quenching, ensuring uniform properties throughout the tool cross-section.
* **Machinability & Grindability:** Exhibits good machinability in the annealed state and predictable grindability in the hardened state.
## **International Standard & Designations**
* **Primary Standard:** **ASTM A681-08 (R2019):** Standard Specification for Tool Steel Alloy.
* **Grade:** **A2**
* **Unified Numbering System (UNS):** **T30102**
* **Common International Equivalents:**
* **ISO:** **100CrMoV5-1**
* **Germany (DIN/W-Nr.):** **1.2363 / X100CrMoV5-1**
* **Japan (JIS):** **SKD12**
* **Sweden (SS):** **2260**

## **Product Applications**
Latrobe LSS™ A2 is a highly versatile steel used across numerous industries for durable, precision tooling.
* **Blanking, Punching, and Forming Dies:** For medium-to-long run production of sheet metal parts.
* **Machine Tools:** Arbors, chucks, collets, and fixtures requiring dimensional stability.
* **Gages and Precision Measuring Instruments:** Master gears, thread rolls, and fixture plates.
* **Molds:** Plastic injection molds and compression molds for engineering resins.
* **Knives and Shear Blades:** For cutting paper, plastic, and soft metals.
* **Rolls:** For cold rolling of ferrous and non-ferrous strip.
## **Processing & Heat Treatment Notes**
* **Machining:** Best performed in the fully annealed condition.
* **Heat Treatment:** Requires preheating to 650-700°C (1200-1300°F) before austenitizing to minimize thermal shock and distortion. After austenitizing, parts should be cooled in still or forced air to below 65°C (150°F) before tempering. **Double tempering is strongly recommended** to ensure complete transformation of retained austenite and to achieve dimensional stability.
* **Surface Enhancement:** Can be nitrided or coated (e.g., TiN, CrN) to further improve surface hardness, wear resistance, and anti-galling properties for specific applications.
