# **Latrobe Knocor™ Hot Work Tool Steel**
## **Product Overview**
Latrobe Knocor™ is a premium-grade, chromium-based hot work tool steel engineered for exceptional performance in high-temperature forming applications. Developed to withstand the severe thermal cycling, mechanical stress, and abrasive wear encountered in hot forging, die casting, and extrusion operations, Knocor™ delivers an outstanding balance of **high-temperature strength, thermal fatigue resistance (heat checking resistance), and wear resistance**. Its optimized chemistry and controlled manufacturing process ensure consistent microstructure and properties, providing extended die life, reduced production downtime, and superior reliability in demanding industrial environments.
## **Key Features & Benefits**
* **Superior Thermal Fatigue Resistance:** Exhibits excellent resistance to the initiation and propagation of heat-checking cracks caused by repeated heating and cooling cycles, a critical factor for die longevity.
* **High Temper Resistance & Hot Hardness:** Maintains significant hardness and strength at elevated operating temperatures (typically up to 600°C / 1112°F), preventing die deformation under load.
* **Good Toughness & Impact Resistance:** Provides necessary resistance to mechanical shock and cracking during high-pressure forming operations, such as forging hammer blows or extrusion pressures.
* **Enhanced Wear & Erosion Resistance:** Offers good resistance to abrasive wear from workpiece materials and erosive wash from molten metals, maintaining dimensional accuracy of the die cavity.
* **Good Hardenability & Dimensional Stability:** Allows for through-hardening in moderate sections with minimal distortion during heat treatment, ensuring precise die geometry.
## **International Standard & Designations**
* **Primary Standard:** **ASTM A681-08 (R2019):** Standard Specification for Tool Steel Alloy.
* **Grade:** Corresponds most closely to **H13**, with potential proprietary enhancements.
* **Unified Numbering System (UNS):** **T20813** (Standard H13 equivalent)
* **Common International Equivalents:**
* **ISO:** **35CrMoV5** / **H13** designation.
* **Germany (DIN/W-Nr.):** **1.2344 / X40CrMoV5-1**
* **Japan (JIS):** **SKD61**
* **Sweden (SS):** **2242**
## **Chemical Composition (%, typical - based on H13-type chemistry)**
Knocor™ features a balanced chromium-molybdenum-vanadium composition optimized for hot work.
| Carbon (C) | Chromium (Cr) | Molybdenum (Mo) | Vanadium (V) | Silicon (Si) | Manganese (Mn) | Iron (Fe) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| 0.35 - 0.42 | 4.75 - 5.50 | 1.10 - 1.75 | 0.80 - 1.20 | 0.80 - 1.20 | 0.20 - 0.50 | Balance |
*Note:* The composition promotes the formation of stable carbides (MC, M₂C, M₇C₃) that provide high-temperature strength and wear resistance. Silicon enhances oxidation resistance and tempering resistance.
## **Physical & Mechanical Properties (Typical)**
| Property | Value / Description |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Density** | 7.80 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³) |
| **Hardness (Annealed)** | 192-229 HB (Brinell) |
| **Hardness (Heat Treated)** | **40 - 52 HRC** (Typical working range, depending on application)
**~46-50 HRC** (Common optimum for many hot work applications) |
| **Austenitizing Temperature** | 1010 - 1060°C (1850 - 1940°F) |
| **Tempering Temperature** | 540 - 650°C (1000 - 1200°F) (Double tempering required) |
| **Thermal Conductivity** | ~25 W/m·K at 400°C (Good for dissipating heat from the die surface) |
| **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion** | ~12.0 x 10⁻⁶ /K (20-500°C) |
## **Product Applications**
Latrobe Knocor™ is the workhorse steel for a wide range of hot forming tooling where thermal management and durability are paramount.
* **Die Casting & Pressure Die Casting:**
* Cores and cavities for aluminum, magnesium, and zinc die casting dies.
* Ingot molds, goosenecks, and plunger tips.
* **Hot Forging:**
* Hammer and press forging dies for steel, titanium, and superalloys.
* Die inserts, punches, and holders.
* **Hot Extrusion:**
* Extrusion dies, mandrels, and containers for aluminum and copper alloys.
* **Other Hot Work Applications:**
* Hot shear blades and punches.
* Glass molding tools.
* Tools for isothermal and hot upset forging.
## **Processing & Heat Treatment Notes**
* **Soft Machining:** Best performed in the annealed condition.
* **Heat Treatment:** Requires thorough preheating (typically in two stages) prior to austenitizing in a controlled atmosphere or vacuum furnace to prevent decarburization and minimize distortion. Quenching is usually performed in still air (air-hardening) or forced air for larger sections. **Double tempering is mandatory** to transform retained austenite and achieve optimal toughness and dimensional stability. The second tempering temperature should be equal to or slightly lower than the first.
* **Surface Treatments:** Nitriding (gas or plasma) is commonly applied to significantly enhance surface hardness, wear resistance, and anti-galling properties, further extending die life.
