Latrobe LSS™ A7 Mod. Wear-Resistant Tool Steel (ASTM A7 Mod.) Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: # **Latrobe LSS™ A7 Mod. Wear-Resistant Tool Steel (ASTM A7 Mod.)** ## **Product Overview** Latrobe LSS™ A7 Mod. is a proprietary, modified variant of the classic AISI A7 air-hardening tool steel, engineered to push the boundaries of wear resistance while enhancing manufacturability and performance consistency. Building upon the foundational high-carbon, high-chromium chemistry of standard A7, this modified grade incorporates precise alloy adjustments and is produced under controlled conditions to deliver **exceptional abrasive wear resistance, improved dimensional stability, and more reliable heat treatment response**. It is designed for the most demanding applications where premature wear is the dominant failure mode, offering extended service life in severe abrasive environments. ## **Key Features & Benefits** * **Superior Abrasive Wear Resistance:** Retains the very high volume of hard carbides characteristic of A7-type steels, providing outstanding resistance to wear when machining, forming, or cutting highly abrasive materials. * **Enhanced Microstructural Uniformity:** Proprietary manufacturing controls promote a more uniform distribution of carbides, reducing the risk of localized brittleness and improving overall performance predictability. * **Improved Dimensional Stability:** The air-hardening nature, combined with modified chemistry, results in minimal and predictable dimensional change during heat treatment, which is critical for maintaining precision in complex tooling. * **Optimized Toughness-Balance:** While prioritizing wear resistance, the modification aims to provide a more consistent toughness profile compared to conventional A7, offering better resistance to chipping in carefully selected applications. * **Good Grindability (in hardened state):** Despite its high hardness, the refined carbide structure allows for efficient and controllable grinding to achieve precise final tool geometries. ## **International Standard & Designifications** * **Primary Reference Standard:** **ASTM A681-08 (R2019):** Standard Specification for Tool Steel Alloy. * **Base Grade:** **A7 (Modified)** – This is a proprietary grade; exact specifications are defined by Latrobe Specialty Steel. * **Manufacturer's Designation:** **Latrobe LSS™ A7 Mod.** * **Unified Numbering System (UNS):** While standard A7 is T30107, this modified version may have proprietary specifications. * **Common International Equivalents (Functional, not chemical):** * This grade occupies a similar performance niche as other ultra-high wear-resistant cold work steels, such as **D7** or certain high-carbon, high-chromium modifications. * **Germany (DIN/W-Nr.):** Functionally similar to grades like **~1.2377** or modified versions of **1.2365**. ## **Chemical Composition (%, typical - Proprietary Modified A7)** The composition is a controlled enhancement of the standard A7 formula. | Carbon (C) | Chromium (Cr) | Molybdenum (Mo) | Vanadium (V) | Tungsten (W) | Manganese (Mn) | Silicon (Si) | Iron (Fe) | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | 2.10 - 2.40 | 5.00 - 6.00 | 0.70 - 1.40 | 0.60 - 1.10 | 0.50 - 1.50 | 0.20 - 0.50 | 0.20 - 0.50 | Balance | *Note:* The precise balance and ranges of C, Cr, Mo, and V are optimized to maximize wear-resistant carbide formation while improving processing characteristics. ## **Physical & Mechanical Properties (Typical)** | Property | Value / Description | | :--- | :--- | | **Density** | ~7.8 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³) | | **Hardness (Annealed)** | 240-270 HB (Brinell) | | **Hardness (Heat Treated)** | **65 - 68 HRC** (Typical optimal working range for maximum wear life) | | **Austenitizing Temperature** | 970 - 1000°C (1775 - 1830°F) – Specific range provided by manufacturer data is critical. | | **Quenching Medium** | Air (Still or Forced) | | **Tempering Temperature** | 175 - 540°C (350 - 1000°F). Commonly double or triple tempered in the 205-425°C (400-800°F) range to achieve target hardness and ensure stability. | | **Toughness** | Low to moderate; it is a wear-first material. Applications should be designed to minimize tensile stress and impact loading. | ## **Product Applications** Latrobe LSS™ A7 Mod. is specified for tooling that requires the ultimate resistance to abrasive wear in cold work applications. * **Precision Blanking and Punching Dies:** For highly abrasive materials such as advanced composites (carbon fiber, fiberglass), reinforced plastics, phenolic laminates, electrical steel (silicon steel), and abrasive pre-coated metals. * **Forming Dies and Rolls:** For shaping abrasive materials where galling and wear are primary concerns. * **Slitter Knives and Rotary Shear Blades:** For cutting abrasive non-metallic sheets, rubber, and specialty alloys. * **Wear Parts and Liners:** In machinery processing abrasive powders, minerals, or ceramics. * **Brick and Tile Mold Components.** ## **Processing & Heat Treatment Notes** * **Machining:** Perform all heavy machining in the fully annealed condition. Use sharp, positive-rake cutting tools and moderate speeds/feeds due to the material's high hardness and abrasiveness in any state. * **Heat Treatment:** **Essential preheating** (e.g., at 650°C/1200°F and 850°C/1560°F) is mandatory to minimize thermal stress. Austenitize in a controlled atmosphere or vacuum furnace. Quench in still or forced air. **Immediate and multiple tempering (2-3 cycles)** is absolutely required to transform retained austenite, develop full properties, and ensure dimensional stability. Never place the tool into service in the as-quenched condition. * **Grinding:** Use sharp, friable grinding wheels (appropriate alumina or CBN) with ample coolant. The material's high hardness demands careful grinding practices to avoid thermal damage. * **Surface Treatments:** Can be nitrided to further enhance surface hardness and wear resistance for specific applications. --- **Disclaimer** *Latrobe LSS™ A7 Mod. is a proprietary tool steel.
