# **Latrobe LSS™ L6 Tool Steel (ASTM L6)**
## **Product Overview**
Latrobe LSS™ L6 is a premium-grade, oil-hardening tool steel classified under the ASTM L6 specification, renowned for its exceptional combination of **high toughness, good wear resistance, and excellent machinability**. Characterized by its significant nickel content, L6 is engineered to withstand severe impact and shock loading while maintaining sufficient surface hardness for wear applications. It is particularly valued in tooling where resistance to breakage and chipping is paramount, serving as a versatile and reliable material for demanding industrial applications.
## **Key Features & Benefits**
* **Exceptional Toughness & Impact Resistance:** The high nickel content provides outstanding resistance to shock loading, cracking, and brittle fracture, making it one of the toughest tool steels available.
* **Good Wear Resistance:** Achieves a favorable balance of surface hardness and core toughness, offering better wear resistance than dedicated shock steels (S-series) while maintaining superior impact strength compared to high-wear steels (D-series).
* **Excellent Machinability:** Exhibits superior machinability in the annealed condition compared to many other tool steels, facilitating easier fabrication of complex tool geometries.
* **Deep Hardenability:** Capable of through-hardening in moderate to heavy sections via oil quenching, ensuring a consistent gradient of properties.
* **Versatile Performance Profile:** Occupies a unique niche, effectively bridging the gap between high-toughness/low-wear and low-toughness/high-wear steel categories.
## **International Standard & Designations**
* **Primary Standard:** **ASTM A681-08 (R2019):** Standard Specification for Tool Steel Alloy.
* **Grade:** **L6**
* **Manufacturer's Designation:** **Latrobe LSS™ L6**
* **Unified Numbering System (UNS):** **T61206**
* **Common International Equivalents:**
* **ISO:** **55NiCrMoV7** (Close equivalent)
* **Germany (DIN/W-Nr.):** **1.2713 / 55NiCrMoV6**
* **Japan (JIS):** **SKT4**
* **Sweden (SS):** **2541**
## **Chemical Composition (%, typical - ASTM L6)**
| Carbon (C) | Nickel (Ni) | Chromium (Cr) | Molybdenum (Mo) | Vanadium (V) | Manganese (Mn) | Silicon (Si) | Iron (Fe) |

## **Physical & Mechanical Properties (Typical)**
| Property | Value / Description |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Density** | 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³) |
| **Hardness (Annealed)** | 200-225 HB (Brinell) |
| **Hardness (Heat Treated)** | **56 - 60 HRC** (Typical working range balancing toughness and wear)
Can achieve up to ~62 HRC with adjusted tempering for higher wear resistance. |
| **Austenitizing Temperature** | 815 - 870°C (1500 - 1600°F) |
| **Quenching Medium** | Oil |
| **Tempering Temperature** | **205 - 595°C (400 - 1100°F).** Commonly tempered at 425-540°C (800-1000°F) to optimize the toughness-hardness balance. **Double tempering is recommended.** |
| **Toughness (Impact Resistance)** | **Exceptionally High.** Among the highest of all commercial tool steels. |
| **Wear Resistance** | **Good.** Adequate for many forming and cutting applications, though lower than dedicated high-carbon, high-chromium grades like D2. |
## **Product Applications**
Latrobe LSS™ L6 is ideally suited for tooling that must withstand severe mechanical shock and heavy loading.
* **Heavy-Duty Forming Tools:** Back-up rolls, forming dies, and mandrels subject to high pressure.
* **Impact Tools:** Chisels, pneumatic tool bits, and hammer heads.
* **Shear Blades and Knives:** For cutting tough materials like cable, wire rope, and high-strength alloys.
* **Gears, Arbors, and Spindles** in heavy machinery.
* **Cold Work Punches and Dies** where breakage is a primary concern.
* **Woodworking Tools** like band saw blades and large cutting knives.
* **Plastic Injection Molds** requiring high polishability and toughness.
## **Processing & Heat Treatment Notes**
* **Machining:** **Excellent** machinability in the annealed condition, among the best of all tool steels.
* **Heat Treatment:** Requires standard preheating practices. Austenitize in a controlled atmosphere furnace to prevent decarburization. Quench in a fast, circulating oil bath. **Temper immediately after quenching.** The recommended high tempering range (425-540°C/800-1000°F) is key to developing its optimal toughness. Double tempering ensures stress relief and stability.
* **Grinding:** Grinds well in the hardened state. Use standard practices for tool steels.
* **Surface Treatments:** Can be carburized or nitrided to enhance surface hardness and wear resistance while retaining its extremely tough core.
