# **Latrobe Graph-Air® Cold Work Tool Steel (ASTM A10)**
## **Product Overview**
Latrobe Graph-Air® is a unique, proprietary air-hardening cold work tool steel conforming to the ASTM A10 classification. Its defining characteristic is a controlled, fine dispersion of **graphite within a high-alloy steel matrix**, which imparts a distinctive set of performance benefits. This innovative microstructure provides **superior machinability, excellent wear resistance, and exceptional vibration damping**, making it an ideal choice for intricate tools, high-volume production components, and applications where resistance to galling and seizing is critical.
## **Key Features & Benefits**
* **Unparalleled Machinability:** The free-graphite particles act as a chip-breaker and lubricant during machining, dramatically improving machinability compared to conventional tool steels of similar hardness, significantly reducing tool wear and production time.
* **Excellent Wear & Galling Resistance:** The graphite provides inherent lubricity at the tool-workpiece interface, reducing friction, heat generation, and adhesion (galling). This is combined with good abrasive wear resistance from the alloy matrix.
* **Superior Vibration Damping:** The graphite phase effectively absorbs vibrational energy, making Graph-Air® ideal for tools prone to chatter (e.g., long-reach boring bars, taps, fine-pitch broaches), resulting in improved surface finish and extended tool life.
* **Good Dimensional Stability:** As an air-hardening steel, it exhibits minimal distortion during heat treatment.
* **Consistent Performance:** The uniform graphite dispersion ensures predictable and reliable behavior in both machining and service.
## **International Standard & Designations**
* **Primary Standard:** **ASTM A681-08 (R2019):** Standard Specification for Tool Steel Alloy.
* **Grade:** **A10** (Graphitic, Air-Hardening)
* **Manufacturer's Designation:** **Latrobe Graph-Air®**
* **Unified Numbering System (UNS):** **T30110**
* **Common International Equivalents (Functional):**
* There is no direct, widespread international equivalent due to its unique graphitic composition.
* **Germany (DIN):** The concept is similar to graphitized 1.2842, but the alloy base differs significantly.
* It is functionally compared to other highly machinable, wear-resistant grades but is distinguished by its graphite content.
## **Chemical Composition (%, typical - ASTM A10)**
The composition is engineered to support a hardenable matrix while facilitating stable graphite formation.
| Carbon (C) (Total) | Graphite (C) | Manganese (Mn) | Silicon (Si) | Nickel (Ni) | Chromium (Cr) | Molybdenum (Mo) | Vanadium (V) | Iron (Fe) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| 1.25 - 1.50 | ~1.00* (approx.) | 1.60 - 2.10 | 0.90 - 1.30 | 1.55 - 2.05 | 0.90 - 1.40 | 1.00 - 1.50 | 0.10 - 0.30 | Balance |
*\*Note: A significant portion of the total carbon is present in the form of free graphite nodules.*
## **Physical & Mechanical Properties (Typical)**
| Property | Value / Description |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Density** | ~7.6 g/cm³ (Slightly lower than solid steel due to graphite) |
| **Hardness (Annealed)** | 210-240 HB (Brinell) |
| **Hardness (Heat Treated)** | **58 - 62 HRC** (Typical optimal working range) |
| **Austenitizing Temperature** | 815 - 845°C (1500 - 1550°F) – **Significantly lower than most air-hardening steels.** |
| **Quenching Medium** | Air (Still or Forced) |
| **Tempering Temperature** | 150 - 425°C (300 - 800°F). Often tempered at 175-205°C (350-400°F) for maximum hardness. |
| **Machinability** | **Excellent** – Rated 85-100% of a 1% carbon steel (B1112) benchmark. |
| **Toughness** | Moderate to Good. |
## **Product Applications**
Latrobe Graph-Air® excels in applications requiring complex machining, wear resistance, and low friction.
* **Intricate Tooling:** Master hubs, intricate form tools, gears, cams, and complex dies that are difficult to machine from conventional steels.
* **Wear Parts with Machining Challenges:** Gibs, ways, wear plates, and guide components that require both durability and extensive machining.
* **Cutting & Forming Tools Prone to Galling:** Punches, dies, and forming rolls for non-ferrous metals (aluminum, brass, copper) and sticky materials like plastics.
* **Chatter-Sensitive Tools:** Long boring bars, precision taps, fine-pitch hobs, and broaches where vibration damping improves finish and life.
* **Gauges and Fixtures:** Requiring stability, wear resistance, and ease of final fitting/machining.
## **Processing & Heat Treatment Notes**
* **Machining:** **Exceptionally good.** Can be machined at higher speeds and feeds with excellent chip control and prolonged cutter life. Produces a characteristic "smoky" dust due to graphite.
* **Heat Treatment:** Key to its performance. The **low austenitizing temperature** is critical to preserve the graphite phase. Overheating will dissolve graphite, destroying its key benefits. Use controlled atmosphere or salt bath to prevent decarburization. Air quench. Single temper is usually sufficient due to low retained austenite.
* **Grinding:** Grinds well, but the graphite can load grinding wheels. Use sharp, open-structure wheels and proper cleaning.
* **Surface Treatments:** **Not typically recommended for nitriding or carburizing**, as these processes interact with the surface graphite. TiN or CrN coatings can be applied to clean, properly prepared surfaces.
