# **Latrobe Lescowear™ Cold Work Tool Steel**
## **Product Overview**
Latrobe Lescowear™ is a proprietary, high-performance **shock-resistant cold work tool steel** engineered specifically to deliver exceptional toughness and wear resistance in demanding applications. Through advanced metallurgical design, Lescowear™ achieves a superior balance between **impact resistance, abrasive wear resistance, and dimensional stability**, making it a versatile choice for tools subject to high stress, intermittent loading, and abrasive conditions. It is particularly valued in applications where conventional tool steels are prone to chipping, cracking, or premature wear failure.
## **Key Features & Benefits**
* **Superior Toughness:** Provides outstanding resistance to chipping, cracking, and fatigue failure under high-impact or intermittent loading conditions, significantly extending tool life in demanding operations.
* **Excellent Wear Resistance:** Balanced alloy composition ensures robust resistance to abrasive wear, offering service life superior to standard shock-resistant grades (S-series) in wear-intensive applications.
* **Good Dimensional Stability:** As an air-hardening grade, it exhibits minimal distortion during heat treatment, ensuring geometric accuracy and reducing post-processing requirements for precision tooling.
* **Versatile Performance Profile:** Engineered to bridge the performance gap between high-toughness/low-wear steels (e.g., S7) and high-wear/moderate-toughness steels (e.g., D2), providing a reliable solution for complex failure modes.
* **Consistent Microstructure:** Proprietary manufacturing processes ensure uniform carbide distribution and consistent mechanical properties throughout the material cross-section.
## **International Standard & Designations**
* **Manufacturer's Proprietary Grade:** **Latrobe Lescowear™**
* This is a proprietary steel chemistry not defined by standard AISI/ASTM nomenclature.
* **Functional Classification:** High-toughness, air-hardening cold work tool steel with enhanced wear characteristics.
* **Common International Equivalents (Functional):**
* Comparable in performance philosophy to other proprietary high-toughness cold work steels, such as Uddeholm's **Sverker 21** or similar grades designed for combined impact and wear resistance.
## **Chemical Composition (%, typical - Proprietary)**
The chemistry is optimized for a fine-grained, tough matrix with a controlled volume of wear-resistant carbides.
| Carbon (C) | Chromium (Cr) | Molybdenum (Mo) | Vanadium (V) | Silicon (Si) | Manganese (Mn) | Other (Proprietary) | Iron (Fe) |

**\*Note:** The exact proprietary composition may include carefully controlled levels of elements such as nickel (Ni) to further enhance core toughness. Values shown represent the characteristic alloy range.
## **Physical & Mechanical Properties (Typical)**
| Property | Value / Description |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Density** | ~7.8 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³) |
| **Hardness (Annealed)** | 200-230 HB (Brinell) |
| **Hardness (Heat Treated)** | **56 - 60 HRC** (Optimal working range balancing toughness and wear)
Can achieve up to ~62 HRC for maximum wear resistance with adjusted tempering. |
| **Austenitizing Temperature** | 1000 - 1030°C (1830 - 1885°F) – Manufacturer-specific. |
| **Quenching Medium** | Air (Still or Forced) |
| **Tempering Temperature** | **425 - 595°C (800 - 1100°F).** Typically tempered in the 480-540°C (900-1000°F) range to optimize the toughness-wear balance. **Double tempering is standard.** |
| **Toughness (Impact Resistance)** | **Very High.** Significantly higher than D2 and A2 at comparable hardness levels, approaching or exceeding that of dedicated shock steels. |
| **Wear Resistance** | **Good to Very Good.** Superior to S-series shock steels and comparable to premium A2-type steels. |
## **Product Applications**
Latrobe Lescowear™ is ideally suited for tooling that encounters combined shock loading and abrasive wear.
* **Heavy-Duty Blanking and Punching Dies:** For thick plate, high-strength steels, and abrasive composites where standard dies chip or crack.
* **Cold Forming Dies and Punches:** For coining, heading, and extrusion of metals, especially where high pressures and material abrasion are present.
* **Shear Blades and Slitter Knives:** For cutting cable, wire rope, reinforcing bar, and tough alloys.
* **Thread Rolling Dies and Knurls:** Requiring resistance to spalling and high surface pressures.
* **Chisels, Tool Bits, and Drift Pins** for heavy mechanical work.
* **Machine Tool Components:** Such as arbors, collets, and fixtures subject to intermittent heavy loads.
* **Wear Parts** in mining, construction, and recycling equipment.
## **Processing & Heat Treatment Notes**
* **Machining:** Good machinability in the annealed condition. Use standard tooling and practices for alloy steels.
* **Heat Treatment:** Requires standard preheating practices for air-hardening steels. Austenitize in a controlled atmosphere or vacuum furnace to prevent decarburization. Air quench. **Temper immediately after quenching.** The recommended high tempering range is critical for developing its signature toughness. Double tempering is required for dimensional stability and property optimization.
* **Grinding:** Good grindability in the hardened state. Use appropriate wheels and coolant.
* **Surface Treatments:** Responds well to nitriding and PVD coatings (TiN, CrN) to further enhance surface hardness and galling resistance for specific applications.
