Latrobe DuraTech™ A11 Powder Metal Tool Steel (AISI A11) Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: **Latrobe DuraTech™ A11 Powder Metallurgy (PM) Tool Steel (AISI A11)** **Product Overview** Latrobe DuraTech™ A11 is a premium-grade, cold work tool steel produced via advanced powder metallurgy (PM) technology. This process yields a material with an exceptionally fine, uniform, and isotropic microstructure, surpassing the capabilities of conventional ingot-cast AISI A11 (also known as CPM 10V or similar grades). DuraTech™ A11 is engineered to deliver the ultimate combination of wear resistance, toughness, and high compressive strength, making it the material of choice for the most demanding tooling applications where severe abrasive wear is the primary failure mode. The PM manufacturing method ensures a virtually carbide-free network, optimal carbide distribution, and minimal segregation. This results in consistent performance in all directions, improved grindability and EDM characteristics, and enhanced heat treatment stability compared to standard A11-type steels. --- **Chemical Composition (Typical Weight %)** | Element | Carbon (C) | Chromium (Cr) | Vanadium (V) | Molybdenum (Mo) | | :--- | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | | **Content** | 2.45 | 5.25 | 9.75 | 1.30 | *The composition is balanced to form a high volume of hard, fine, vanadium-rich MC-type carbides, providing exceptional abrasion resistance.* --- **Key Physical & Mechanical Properties** * **High Wear Resistance:** Offers arguably the highest abrasion resistance available in any commercial tool steel, due to its very high vanadium carbide content. * **Good Toughness:** Exhibits significantly better toughness than other high-carbon, high-vanadium steels, thanks to its clean, homogeneous PM structure. * **High Compressive Strength:** Excellent for applications involving high pressure and stress. * **Isotropy:** Properties are uniform in all orientations, critical for complex tools. * **Dimensional Stability:** Minimal distortion during heat treatment due to the uniform microstructure. * **Improved Machinability (Pre-Hardened):** The PM structure offers better grindability and EDM performance than conventional versions of A11. *Note: Specific values for hardness, transverse rupture strength, and impact toughness depend on the heat treatment cycle. Typical service hardness ranges from 60-65 HRC.* --- **Heat Treatment** * **Annealing:** Furnace cool to 900°F (482°C), hold, then cool slowly. Typical annealed hardness: 24-26 HRC. * **Stress Relieving (After Rough Machining):** Heat to 1100-1300°F (595-705°C) and hold. * **Hardening (Austenitizing):** Preheat thoroughly. Austenitize in the range of **2025-2075°F (1107-1135°C)**. Use a neutral salt or controlled atmosphere furnace to prevent decarburization. * **Quenching:** Quench in air (adequate for most sections), salt, or oil. Air quenching from the high austenitizing temperature is a key advantage, minimizing distortion. * **Tempering:** **Double or triple temper immediately** after quenching. Temper within the range of **950-1050°F (510-565°C)**. A minimum of two 2-hour tempers is standard. Hardness will typically be 60-65 HRC. --- **Applications** DuraTech™ A11 is specified for severe wear applications where other tool steels fail prematurely. Typical uses include: * **Blank & Punch Tools:** For abrasive materials (e.g., composites, fiberglass, carbon fiber, plastics with abrasive fillers, copper alloys, hard steels). * **Forming & Drawing Dies:** For high-volume forming of abrasive sheet metals. * **Slitter Knives & Wear Plates:** In metal processing lines. * **Powder Compaction Tooling:** Punches and dies for metal powder pressing. * **Industrial Knives:** For cutting highly abrasive materials. * **Thread Rolling Dies & Cold Extrusion Tools.** * **Replacement Parts:** For tungsten carbide in certain applications where its superior toughness is beneficial. --- **International Standards & Cross-References** * **UNS:** T44004 * **AISI:** A11 (PM version) * **European (EN):** ~1.9C-5.2Cr-9.8V-1.5Mo (Closest equivalent to a PM-produced matrix) * **Common Trade Name:** Often referred to as **CPM 10V** (Crucible Particle Metallurgy 10V is a widely known equivalent grade). * **Other Manufacturers:** Similar PM A11-type steels are available globally under various proprietary names (e.g., Böhler K390, Daido DC11, etc.). --- **Why Choose Latrobe DuraTech™ A11?** For applications where extreme abrasive wear is the dominant concern, Latrobe DuraTech™ A11 provides an unparalleled service life. Its powder metallurgy pedigree guarantees consistency, reliability, and performance that maximize tool life and productivity in the most challenging conditions, ultimately reducing downtime and cost per part. *For specific property data sheets, heat treatment guides, or technical assistance, please consult with Latrobe Specialty Metals distribution or technical support.* -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Latrobe DuraTech™ A11 Powder Metal Tool Steel (AISI A11) Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <5364 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Latrobe DuraTech™ A11 Powder Metal Tool Steel (AISI A11) Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
