# **Product Technical Specification: AISI 1022 Steel, Hot Rolled, Round Bar (19-32 mm / 0.75-1.25 in)**
---
## **1. Product Overview**
AISI 1022 is a widely used low-carbon steel distinguished by its balanced composition, offering a favorable combination of strength, ductility, and weldability. This product is supplied in the **Hot Rolled (HR)** condition as round bars within the **19 mm to 32 mm (0.75 to 1.25 inch)** diameter range. The hot rolling process involves shaping heated steel billets through a series of rolls, resulting in a cost-effective and readily available material with a characteristic mill-scaled surface. The slightly elevated manganese content of AISI 1022 provides a marginal increase in strength and hardenability over the common AISI 1020 grade, making it a versatile and economical choice for general structural fabrication, forging stock, and components that may undergo subsequent heat treatment.
## **2. Key Features & Material Advantages**
* **Cost-Effective Production:** As a hot-rolled product, it represents the most economical supply form, ideal for projects with significant material volume and budget considerations.
* **Enhanced Strength Potential:** The specified manganese range (0.70-1.00%) provides greater solid solution strengthening and improved response to heat treatment compared to lower manganese grades like AISI 1020.
* **Excellent Weldability and Formability:** Maintains the excellent weldability characteristic of low-carbon steels and offers good ductility for both hot and cold forming operations.
* **Uniform Section Properties:** The controlled diameter range ensures consistent cooling post-rolling, leading to reliable and uniform mechanical properties throughout the bar length.
* **Versatile Industrial Base Material:** Serves as an ideal starting stock for machining, forging, or as feedstock for subsequent thermal processes such as normalizing or carburizing.
## **3. Standard Chemical Composition (Weight %)**

* Melting Point: ~1520°C (2768°F)
## **5. Primary Applications**
This product is suited for a broad spectrum of industrial applications that benefit from its balanced properties and cost efficiency.
* **General Structural Fabrication:** Brackets, frames, supports, gussets, and base plates in machinery and light to medium structures.
* **Shafts and Axles:** For agricultural equipment, conveyor systems, and general mechanical drives requiring moderate strength and toughness.
* **Forging Stock:** An excellent and economical raw material for producing forged components like levers, hooks, and connectors, where the manganese content improves forgeability.
* **Automotive Components:** Non-critical chassis parts, suspension linkages, and mounting brackets.
* **Case Hardening Blanks:** A suitable material for parts destined for carburizing (e.g., gears, pins) due to its good core hardenability imparted by the higher manganese.
* **Construction and General Hardware:** Anchor bolts, tie rods, pins, and fasteners for general use.
## **6. Conforming International Standards**
This hot-rolled product aligns with several international standards for carbon steel bars.
* **AISI (USA):** AISI 1022
* **ASTM (USA):** Commonly supplied to meet the mechanical property requirements of **ASTM A36** (Carbon Structural Steel). Also conforms to **ASTM A510** for general requirements.
* **SAE (USA):** SAE J403, SAE J412 (Chemical Compositions)
* **UNS (USA):** UNS G10220
* **DIN (Germany):** 1.0406 / C18 or 1.1151 / C22 (Close equivalents)
* **JIS (Japan):** JIS S20C / SS400 (Similar grades for structural and machine use)
* **ISO (International):** ISO 683-18 (Heat-treatable non-alloy steels)
## **7. Fabrication & Processing Notes**
* **Surface Condition:** The bar is covered with a dark blue-grey **mill scale**, an oxide layer that must be removed via shot blasting, pickling, or machining prior to painting, plating, or precision machining.
* **Machining:** Machines well. The initial machining pass should remove the hard and abrasive mill scale to prevent excessive tool wear. For optimal machinability, dimensional stability, and more consistent properties, a **normalizing** heat treatment is recommended.
* **Welding:** **Excellent weldability.** Preheating is generally not required for this thickness range under normal conditions. All standard arc welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW) are suitable.
* **Heat Treatment:** Responds well to **case hardening** processes. A preliminary normalizing treatment is often applied prior to carburizing to refine the grain structure for optimal core toughness and to minimize distortion.
## **8. Availability & Ordering**
* **Form:** Straight length, round hot-rolled bars.
* **Diameter Range:** **19 mm to 32 mm (0.75 inches to 1.25 inches).**
* **Standard Lengths:** Typically 6 meters (20 ft) or 12 meters (40 ft), also available as random mill lengths.
* **Condition:** As-Hot Rolled (HR), with mill scale.
* **Tolerances:** Standard commercial hot-rolled bar tolerances apply.

**Disclaimer:** The information provided is for reference purposes. Mechanical properties, especially yield and tensile strength, can vary between heats, manufacturers, and cooling rates. This product is commonly supplied to meet the minimum mechanical property requirements of standards like ASTM A36. It is the responsibility of the end-user to evaluate the material's suitability for any specific application, including conducting all necessary testing and validation. For applications requiring more consistent properties, improved machinability, and internal stress relief, specifying a **normalized** condition is strongly advised.
