### **Product Datasheet: AISI 1038 Hot Rolled Steel Round Bar (19-32 mm / 0.75-1.25 in)**
---
#### **1. Product Overview**
AISI 1038 Hot Rolled Round Bar is a medium-carbon steel supplied in the as-rolled condition with a characteristic mill scale surface. With a carbon content slightly higher than AISI 1035, it offers improved strength and hardenability while maintaining good ductility and machinability. The 19-32 mm (0.75-1.25 in) diameter represents a highly versatile and commonly stocked size range, ideal for a wide array of general engineering, automotive, and structural applications where a balance of strength, formability, and cost-effectiveness is required.
---
#### **2. Key Characteristics & Advantages**
* **Enhanced Strength:** Higher carbon content provides greater tensile and yield strength compared to lower-grade 10xx steels.
* **Good Hardenability:** Suitable for through-hardening and surface hardening processes (e.g., induction hardening).
* **Cost-Effective:** The hot-rolled production process makes it an economical choice for many applications.
* **Good Machinability:** Can be readily machined in the as-rolled or annealed condition with proper tooling.
* **Versatile Fabrication:** Well-suited for forging, welding (with proper procedure), and cold forming to a moderate degree.
---

---
#### **6. Primary Applications**
AISI 1038 hot-rolled rounds are used in a wide range of general engineering and mechanical components that benefit from its balanced properties.
* **Automotive & Transportation:**
* Axle shafts and stub shafts
* Gears, sprockets, and pinions (often after heat treatment)
* Steering linkage components
* General brackets and mounts
* **General Machinery & Equipment:**
* Shafts, spindles, and pins
* Bolts, studs, and fasteners (Grade 8.8 equivalent potential)
* Hydraulic cylinder barrels and rods
* Machine tool components
* **Construction & Agricultural:**
* Implement drive shafts
* Pivot pins and bushings
* Linkage parts for earth-moving equipment
* **Forging Stock:** Commonly used as billet material for closed-die forgings requiring subsequent heat treatment.
---
#### **7. Heat Treatment Response**
While supplied as-rolled, AISI 1038 is readily heat-treatable for enhanced properties:
* **Annealing:** Heat to ~790-815°C (1450-1500°F), slow cool. Improves machinability.
* **Normalizing:** Heat to ~870-925°C (1600-1700°F), air cool. Refines grain structure.
* **Quenching & Tempering (Through-Hardening):**
* **Austenitizing:** ~830-855°C (1525-1575°F)
* **Quenchant:** Oil (preferred for better toughness and less distortion)
* **Tempering:** Typically 425-650°C (800-1200°F) to achieve desired strength/toughness.
* **Surface Hardening:** An excellent candidate for **flame hardening** or **induction hardening**.
---
#### **8. Fabrication & Processing Notes**
* **Machining:** Good machinability in the as-rolled or annealed condition. Mill scale should be removed for precision machining. Use appropriate cutting speeds and feeds.
* **Welding:** **Fair to Good** with precautions. Pre-heating (150-260°C / 300-500°F) is recommended for sections over 12 mm (0.5 in). Post-weld heat treatment (stress relief) is advisable for critical applications. Use low-hydrogen electrodes.
* **Forming:** Can be hot-worked effectively. Cold forming is possible with adequate bend radii.
* **Surface Preparation:** Mill scale must be removed by pickling, abrasive blasting, or machining prior to painting, plating, or precision finishing.
---
#### **9. Quality & Inspection**
* Material is typically supplied with a **Mill Test Report (MTR)** certifying chemical composition and mechanical properties.
* Dimensional tolerances conform to standard hot-rolled bar specifications (e.g., ASTM A29).
* Surface condition: Hot-rolled, with a layer of blue/black iron oxide (mill scale).
---
**Disclaimer:** The information provided is typical and for reference purposes. Specific properties can vary between manufacturers, heats, and processing conditions. For critical applications, always consult the material certification, relevant standards, and consider application-specific testing.
