AISI 1116 Steel, hot rolled Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Data Sheet: AISI 1116 Steel, Hot-Rolled** #### **1. Overview** AISI 1116 in the hot-rolled condition is a low-carbon, **re-phosphorized and re-sulfurized free-machining steel**. Supplied with a characteristic mill-scaled surface, this product form offers the most cost-effective entry point for acquiring this highly machinable grade. The deliberate additions of sulfur and phosphorus create a microstructure that promotes excellent chip-breaking during machining, significantly improving productivity and tool life. While lacking the dimensional precision and surface finish of cold-drawn material, hot-rolled AISI 1116 provides the essential free-machining characteristics for applications where the final shape and surface are achieved entirely through subsequent machining operations. --- #### **2. Chemical Composition (AISI/SAE Standard)** | Element | Content (%) | | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.14 - 0.20 | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.00 - 1.30 | | **Phosphorus (P)** | **0.07 - 0.12** | | **Sulfur (S)** | **0.16 - 0.23** | | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | **Key Distinction:** The specified ranges for both **phosphorus (P)** and **sulfur (S)** define this as a dual-enhanced free-machining steel. This chemistry provides superior machinability compared to non-resulfurized grades like 1018, but typically less than leaded grades like 12L14. --- #### **3. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (As-Hot Rolled)** *Properties are for the "black," as-rolled state with mill scale.* | Property | Typical Value / Description | | :--- | :--- | | **Condition** | Hot-Rolled | | **Tensile Strength** | **420 - 550 MPa (61 - 80 ksi)** | | **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | **240 - 345 MPa (35 - 50 ksi)** | | **Elongation (in 50 mm)** | **~ 18 - 25%** | | **Hardness** | **~ 130 - 170 HB** | | **Machinability** | **Excellent (~130-145% of AISI 1212).** The combination of sulfur (forming soft MnS inclusions) and phosphorus (strengthening the matrix) provides outstanding chip-breaking action, enabling high cutting speeds and good surface finish. | | **Surface Finish** | Standard hot-rolled finish with adherent mill scale. This scale must be removed (via machining, pickling, or abrasive blasting) for functional surfaces or further processing. | | **Dimensional Tolerance** | Commercial hot-rolled tolerances. Less precise than cold-drawn product. | | **Cold Formability** | **Fair.** The higher manganese and phosphorus content increase strength but reduce ductility compared to basic low-carbon steels. Suitable for light forming. | | **Weldability** | **Extremely Poor.** The high sulfur and phosphorus content make it **highly susceptible to hot cracking (solidification cracking)**. **Welding is not recommended** and should be avoided in design. | | **Hardenability** | **Very Low.** Not suitable for through-hardening. Can be case hardened (e.g., carburized) if a wear-resistant surface is needed. | --- #### **4. Key Characteristics & Metallurgical Behavior** * **Economical Free-Machining Feedstock:** The hot-rolled form provides the beneficial machining additives at the lowest possible raw material cost. * **Chip-Breaking Structure:** Manganese sulfide inclusions act as internal stress risers and lubricants, producing short, broken chips that reduce cutting forces, heat, and tool wear. * **Compromised Ductility and Weldability:** The deliberate additions that aid machinability (S, P) significantly reduce the material's ductility and make it essentially unweldable for any critical application. * **Scale and Decarburization:** The hot-rolling process leaves a surface oxide layer (scale) and may cause a thin layer of decarburization, which must be machined away in finished parts. --- #### **5. Primary Product Applications** This product is used as a raw material for high-volume machining of components where final cost and machinability are prioritized over as-supplied precision and surface quality. * **Screw Machine & CNC Parts:** **Bushings, spacers, shafts, fittings, and fasteners** produced in high volume on automatic screw machines and CNC lathes, where the entire surface is machined. * **Automotive Non-Structural Components:** Various **brackets, linkage parts, sensor bodies, and hydraulic fittings** that are fully machined from bar stock. * **General Machined Components:** Parts where the starting condition's dimensional tolerance is not critical, as final dimensions are achieved through machining. * **Stock for Cold Drawing:** Often used as the starting feedstock for producing cold-drawn AISI 1116 bars and wire. --- #### **6. Relevant International & Industry Standards** | Standard System | Standard Designation | Title / Scope | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **AISI / SAE / UNS (USA)** | **1116, SAE J403, UNS G11160** | Standard Free-Machining Steel Grade | | **ASTM (USA)** | **ASTM A29/A29M** | Specification for Steel Bars, Carbon and Alloy, Hot-Wrought | | **ASTM (USA)** | **ASTM A576** | Specification for Steel Bars, Carbon, Hot-Wrought, Special Quality | | **DIN / EN (Germany/EU)** | **1.0718 / 10S20** | EN 10087: Free-cutting steels. A close equivalent. | | **JIS (Japan)** | **SUM22** or **SUM22L** | Free Cutting Steel (Closest common equivalent). | | **GB (China)** | **Y20** | Free-Cutting Steel (GB/T 8731). | --- ### **Manufacturing & Selection Guide** 1. **Material Selection:** Choose hot-rolled AISI 1116 for **high-volume machining jobs** where the entire part profile is machined from the bar, minimizing the cost impact of the mill scale, and where welding is not required. 2. **First Processing Step:** Remove mill scale via **turning, pickling, or abrasive blasting** before precision machining or any forming operation. 3. **Fabrication:** Excellently suited for **high-speed turning, drilling, tapping, and milling**. Capable of **light cold forming** prior to machining. 4. **Heat Treatment:** Generally not performed for through-hardening. Can be **carburized** to create a hard, wear-resistant surface on selected areas. 5. **Joining:** **Must use mechanical fastening** (threads, pins, press fits). **Fusion welding is prohibited** for reliable assemblies. **Weldability Warning:** **This steel is NOT weldable.** The high sulfur and phosphorus will cause cracks in the weld and heat-affected zone. Designs must incorporate alternative joining methods. **Summary:** **AISI 1116 hot-rolled bar is an economical, high-machinability steel designed for production efficiency in parts that are fully machined from bar stock.** It delivers **excellent chip-breaking characteristics and good machining surface finishes at a low initial material cost**. Its value is realized in high-volume production environments where reducing machining cycle time and extending tool life directly lower the final part cost. While unsuitable for welding or high-strength applications, it remains a fundamental material in the inventory of shops specializing in the production of precision-machined components. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1116 Steel, hot rolled Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <4925 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1116 Steel, hot rolled Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
