## **Product Data Sheet: AISI 1137 Steel, As-Rolled**
---
### **1. Product Overview**
**AISI 1137** is a medium-carbon, **resulfurized free-machining steel** supplied in the standard **as-rolled (hot-rolled)** condition. This state represents the most economical and common form of this versatile grade, where the steel is shaped to its final dimensions at high temperatures. The resulting product has a characteristic **mill scale** surface and commercial dimensional tolerances.
The "as-rolled" condition provides the baseline mechanical properties and microstructure from which all other processed forms (cold drawn, heat treated) are derived. AISI 1137 distinguishes itself from plain medium-carbon steels by its sulfur addition, which **significantly improves machinability** at the expense of some transverse ductility and weldability. It is designed for applications requiring good machinability in a stronger material than low-carbon free-cutting steels.
**Key Characteristics of As-Rolled AISI 1137:**
* **Improved Machinability:** The controlled sulfur content (0.08-0.13%) promotes chip breaking, reduces cutting forces, and improves surface finish compared to non-resulfurized grades like 1045.
* **Good Strength & Hardenability:** With a carbon content of 0.32-0.39% and elevated manganese, it offers appreciable strength in the as-rolled state and can be effectively heat treated (quenched and tempered) for higher performance.
* **Cost-Effective & Readily Available:** As the primary mill product, it is widely stocked and offers the lowest cost-per-weight for this grade.
* **Suitable for Further Processing:** Serves as an excellent starting material for forging, machining, and subsequent heat treatment.

### **2. Chemical Composition (Standard % by Weight)**
The composition is balanced for machinability, strength, and moderate hardenability.
| Element | Content (%) | Function & Implication |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | 0.32 - 0.39 | Provides core strength and is essential for response to hardening treatments. |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.35 - 1.65 | **Key for Hardenability.** Increases depth of hardening and combines with sulfur to form beneficial manganese sulfide (MnS) inclusions. |
| **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.040 | Residual element, controlled to maintain toughness. |
| **Sulfur (S)** | 0.08 - 0.13 | **Machinability Enhancer.** Forms MnS inclusions that act as chip breakers, improving machinability but reducing transverse ductility. |
| **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Base metal. |

### **3. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (As-Rolled Condition)**
*Properties are as-rolled and can vary with mill rolling and cooling practice. The presence of mill scale is standard.*

| **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 415 - 550 MPa | 60,000 - 80,000 psi |
| **Elongation (in 50 mm / 2 in)** | 15% - 22% | 15% - 22% |
| **Reduction of Area** | 40% - 55% | 40% - 55% |
| **Hardness** | 174 - 229 HB | 174 - 229 HB |
| **Density** | 7.87 g/cm³ | 0.284 lb/in³ |
| **Modulus of Elasticity** | 200 GPa | 29,000 ksi |
| **Machinability Rating** | **~ 75-80%** (AISI 1212 = 100%) | Good; notably better than 1035/1045. |

### **4. International Standards & Cross-References**
As-rolled AISI 1137 conforms to standard hot-rolled carbon steel bar specifications.
| Standard System | Equivalent Designation | Applicable Specification |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **ASTM / AISI (USA)** | AISI 1137 | **ASTM A29** (Standard Specification for Steel Bars, Carbon) |
| **SAE (USA)** | SAE 1137 | SAE J403, J412 |
| **UNS (USA)** | G11370 | - |

### **5. Primary Applications**
As-rolled AISI 1137 is selected as a versatile, economical raw material for parts that will undergo significant secondary processing.
* **General Machined Components:** Shafts, pins, studs, and gears that are machined from bar stock and may be used as-machined or heat-treated.
* **Forging Blanks:** An excellent feedstock for hot forging into components like levers, connecting rods, and tool heads.
* **Automotive Parts:** Non-critical shafts, brackets, and transmission components.
* **Fastener Stock:** Used for manufacturing bolts and other fasteners, often followed by cold drawing or heat treatment.
* **Agricultural & Machinery Parts:** Pins, bushings, and wear parts that can be surface hardened.
* **Repair & Maintenance:** A common stock material for fabricating replacement parts.
---
### **6. Processing Notes**
* **Heat Treatment:** Well-suited for **quenching and tempering**. Typical process: Austenitize at 830-860°C (1525-1580°F), quench in oil, and temper to desired hardness. Also suitable for **surface hardening** (induction, flame).
* **Machining:** **Good machinability.** The sulfur content aids chip breaking. Use sharp tools and adequate coolant. For best results on complex parts, normalizing before machining is recommended.
* **Weldability:** **Poor.** The sulfur content promotes hot cracking. Welding is not recommended for critical applications. If necessary, use low-hydrogen electrodes with pre-heat and post-weld heat treatment.
* **Surface Preparation:** **Mill scale must be removed** by pickling, shot blasting, or machining before precision operations, painting, or further processing.
* **Cold Forming:** Fair ductility allows for moderate bending. For severe forming, annealing is recommended.
---
**Disclaimer:** The information provided is for general reference. Properties and surface condition can vary between manufacturing lots. The material exhibits anisotropic behavior typical of resulfurized steels. For critical applications, testing of the specific material is recommended. Always consult the relevant Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and material certifications before use.
