AISI 1137 Steel, water quenched from 845°C (1550°F), 540°C (1000°F) temper, round Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ## **Product Data Sheet: AISI 1137 Steel, Heat Treated Condition (Quenched & Tempered)** --- ### **1. Product Overview** **AISI 1137** is a medium-carbon, **resulfurized free-machining steel** that can be heat treated to achieve significantly higher strength and hardness than its as-rolled or cold-drawn condition. This datasheet specifies AISI 1137 round bar that has undergone a precise **quenching and tempering (Q&T) heat treatment**: - **Austenitizing:** 845°C (1550°F) - **Quenching Medium:** Water - **Tempering:** 540°C (1000°F) This treatment transforms the relatively soft, free-machining steel into a **strong, wear-resistant material** suitable for applications requiring good toughness and moderate hardness. The water quench provides rapid cooling for full transformation to martensite in suitable sections, while the 540°C temper produces a tempered martensite structure that balances strength and ductility. **Key Characteristics of Heat Treated AISI 1137:** * **Enhanced Strength & Hardness:** Through-hardening via Q&T significantly increases tensile and yield strength over the material's annealed or cold-drawn state. * **Good Toughness:** The 540°C temper provides excellent toughness for a quenched steel, reducing brittleness while maintaining substantial hardness. * **Retained Machinability (Pre-Treatment):** In its annealed or spheroidized condition prior to heat treatment, AISI 1137 offers good machinability due to its sulfur content, allowing complex parts to be machined before hardening. * **Limited Weldability:** Like all resulfurized steels, AISI 1137 has poor weldability even in the annealed state, and welding after heat treatment is generally not recommended. --- ### **2. Chemical Composition (Standard % by Weight)** The composition provides both machinability and hardenability for heat treatment. | Element | Content (%) | Function & Implication for Heat Treatment | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.32 - 0.39 | **Primary hardening element.** Provides the necessary carbon content to form strong martensite during quenching. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.35 - 1.65 | **Increases hardenability.** Allows deeper penetration of hardness during quenching, especially important for water quenching to reduce cracking risk. | | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.040 | Residual, kept low to prevent temper embrittlement. | | **Sulfur (S)** | 0.08 - 0.13 | **Machinability enhancer.** Forms manganese sulfide inclusions that improve pre-heat treatment machinability but can slightly reduce transverse toughness in the hardened state. | | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Base metal. | --- ### **3. Heat Treatment Parameters & Resulting Properties** *The water quench provides maximum hardness potential but requires careful control to prevent cracking, especially in complex shapes or large sections.* | **Heat Treatment Cycle** | **Parameters** | | :--- | :--- | | **Austenitizing** | 845°C (1550°F) - Full transformation to austenite | | **Quenching** | Water - Rapid cooling to form martensite | | **Tempering** | 540°C (1000°F) - Relieves stresses, improves toughness | | **Resulting Mechanical Properties** | **Typical Value** | | :--- | :--- | | **Tensile Strength** | 900 - 1100 MPa (130,000 - 160,000 psi) | | **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 750 - 950 MPa (109,000 - 138,000 psi) | | **Elongation (in 50 mm)** | 15% - 20% | | **Reduction of Area** | 40% - 55% | | **Hardness** | 28 - 35 HRC (269 - 327 HB) | | **Impact Toughness (Charpy V-notch)** | 20 - 40 J (15 - 30 ft-lb) | --- ### **4. International Standards & Cross-References** | Standard System | Equivalent Designation | Applicable Specification | Notes | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **ASTM / AISI (USA)** | AISI 1137 | ASTM A108 (for base material) | Heat treatment per customer specification. | | **SAE (USA)** | SAE 1137 | SAE J403, J412 | | | **UNS (USA)** | G11370 | - | | | **DIN (Germany)** | **1.0735** (40S20) | DIN EN 10277 | Similar resulfurized grade. | | **BS (UK)** | **216M36** | BS 970 | Similar free-cutting grade. | --- ### **5. Primary Applications** Heat treated AISI 1137 is used for components requiring good strength, moderate wear resistance, and where the material's free-machining characteristics in the annealed state are advantageous for manufacturing. * **High-Strength Fasteners:** Bolts, studs, and pins requiring tensile strength beyond typical low-carbon steels. * **Automotive Components:** Gears, shafts, and transmission parts that benefit from pre-hardening machinability. * **Hydraulic & Pneumatic Parts:** Cylinder rods, piston rods, and valve components requiring wear resistance. * **Agricultural Equipment:** Cutting blades, tillage tool components, and high-wear pins. * **General Machinery Parts:** Shafts, spindles, and rollers subjected to moderate stresses and wear. --- ### **6. Processing & Fabrication Notes** * **Machining:** **Must be machined before final heat treatment.** In its annealed/spheroidized state, AISI 1137 offers good machinability. After Q&T, machining is difficult and requires carbide tools; only light finishing operations (grinding) are practical. * **Heat Treatment:** This specific cycle (845°C water quench + 540°C temper) must be precisely controlled. Water quenching increases cracking risk for complex shapes or large diameters; oil quenching may be specified for such parts with adjusted tempering. Tempering at 540°C provides an optimal strength-toughness balance. * **Weldability:** **Poor.** The sulfur content promotes hot cracking. Welding is not recommended, especially in the heat treated condition. If absolutely necessary, extensive pre-heat, low-hydrogen electrodes, and post-weld heat treatment are required. * **Cold Forming:** Not recommended after heat treatment due to high strength and reduced ductility. Any forming should be done in the annealed state. * **Grinding & Finishing:** The heat treated material responds well to grinding operations. Caution is needed to avoid grinding burns due to the tempering temperature (540°C); use adequate coolant and proper wheel selection. --- ### **7. Limitations & Special Considerations** 1. **Cracking Risk:** Water quenching, while providing maximum hardness, carries a higher risk of distortion and quench cracking compared to oil quenching, particularly for parts with sharp corners, uneven sections, or diameters over ~25mm (1 inch). 2. **Section Size Limitation:** The effectiveness of through-hardening is limited by the material's hardenability. For large diameters, the core may not fully harden with a water quench, resulting in a non-martensitic core structure. 3. **Anisotropy:** The sulfur inclusions can cause directional properties (anisotropy), with mechanical properties (especially toughness and ductility) typically lower in the transverse direction. --- **Disclaimer:** The properties listed are typical for this specific heat treatment on standard round bar sections. Actual properties will vary with section size, exact chemistry, and heat treatment process control. For critical applications, prototype testing is essential. Always consult with a qualified heat treater and review material certifications before specifying this treatment. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1137 Steel, water quenched from 845°C (1550°F), 540°C (1000°F) temper, round Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <4956 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1137 Steel, water quenched from 845°C (1550°F), 540°C (1000°F) temper, round Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
