AISI 1141 Steel, as rolled Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Introduction: AISI 1141 Hot-Rolled Steel Bar (As-Rolled Condition)** **Overview** AISI 1141 is a versatile, medium-carbon, resulfurized free-machining steel. Supplied in the **"As-Rolled"** condition, this product has undergone the hot-rolling process and is delivered without subsequent heat treatment or cold finishing. This state provides a cost-effective material with a characteristic mill scale surface, good strength, and excellent machinability suitable for a wide range of industrial components that may undergo further forging, machining, or heat treatment. **Key Features & Advantages** * **Excellent Machinability:** The sulfur content forms beneficial manganese sulfide inclusions that break up chips during cutting, reducing tool wear, improving surface finish on machined parts, and allowing for higher production speeds. * **Good Strength & Hardenability:** The balanced carbon and elevated manganese content provide good tensile strength in the as-rolled state and respond well to thermal treatments like quenching and tempering or surface hardening (flame/induction). * **Economic Efficiency:** As the most basic form of supply, hot-rolled material is typically the lowest-cost option, ideal for applications where surface finish is not critical or where material will be fully machined. * **Suitable for Forging:** The as-rolled structure and chemistry make AISI 1141 a suitable candidate for hot forging into near-net-shape parts. --- **1. Chemical Composition (Standard Conformance)** The chemical composition is the defining characteristic of AISI 1141 and conforms to international standards. | Element | Standard Range (%) | Key Function | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.37 – 0.45 | Provides base strength and hardenability. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.35 – 1.65 | Significantly increases hardenability and strength; combines with sulfur to form MnS for machinability. | | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.04 | Residual element (kept low for toughness). | | **Sulfur (S)** | 0.08 – 0.13 | **Free-machining additive.** Forms soft MnS inclusions that act as internal chip breakers. | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.10 – 0.30 | Acts as a deoxidizer during steelmaking; contributes to strength. | | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Base element. | **Key International Standard Equivalents:** * **UNS:** G11410 * **ASTM:** A29 (Standard Specification for Steel Bars, Carbon and Alloy, Hot-Wrought and Cold-Finished, General Requirements) * **SAE:** J403, J412 (SAE 1141) * **DIN (Germany):** 35S20 / 1.0726 * **EN (Europe):** 35S20 * **JIS (Japan):** SUM43 * **ISO:** 35S20 --- **2. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (As-Rolled Condition)** *Note: Properties in the as-rolled state are influenced by the final rolling temperature and cooling rate, leading to natural variation. Values below are typical averages.* | Property | Typical Value / Description | | :--- | :--- | | **Density** | 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³) | | **Modulus of Elasticity** | 200 - 210 GPa (29,000 – 30,500 ksi) | | **Poisson's Ratio** | ~0.29 | | **Thermal Conductivity** | ~51.9 W/m·K (at 100°C) | | **Machinability (Comparison)** | ~85% (Based on 100% for AISI 1212) – Excellent for a medium-carbon steel. | | **Tensile Strength** | 550 – 690 MPa (80 – 100 ksi) | | **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 345 – 485 MPa (50 – 70 ksi) | | **Elongation (in 50mm)** | 18% – 28% | | **Reduction of Area** | 40% – 55% | | **Brinell Hardness (HB)** | 170 – 220 | | **Surface Condition** | Characteristic blue-gray **mill scale** (iron oxide layer). | --- **3. Product Applications** AISI 1141 in the As-Rolled condition is the starting point for many components that undergo further processing. Its primary use is in applications where its free-machining properties and strength are valued. * **General Machined Components:** Shafts, pins, bolts, studs, and gear blanks produced on automatic screw machines and CNC lathes, where the entire surface is machined away. * **Forging Blanks:** Used as stock material for hot-forged parts like automotive connecting rods, lever arms, and other high-strength forged components. * **Industrial Parts:** Spindles, axles, rollers, and other parts that will be heat-treated (quenched & tempered) or surface-hardened after machining. * **Automotive (Non-Critical):** Various stressed components where the as-rolled strength is sufficient or where full machining/heat treatment is planned. * **Tool Bodies & Fixtures:** For jigs, fixtures, and non-cutting tool applications where machinability and stability are important. --- **4. Important Considerations for "As-Rolled" Material** * **Mill Scale:** The surface oxide layer must be removed (via pickling, shot blasting, or machining) for most finishing operations, welding, or to prevent contamination in heat treatment furnaces. * **Dimensional Tolerance:** Hot-rolled products have wider dimensional tolerances compared to cold-finished bars. They are suitable where dimensions are not critical or will be fully machined. * **Internal Stress:** The as-rolled condition may contain residual thermal stresses. For critical machining operations requiring high dimensional stability, stress relieving is often recommended prior to final machining. * **Variability:** Mechanical properties can vary more significantly within a heat and across the bar cross-section compared to heat-treated or cold-worked material. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1141 Steel, as rolled Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <4981 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1141 Steel, as rolled Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
