### **Product Introduction: AISI 1211 Steel, Hot Rolled Round Bar (19-38 mm)**
**Overview**
AISI 1211 is a highly-engineered, low-carbon, resulfurized and rephosphorized free-machining steel supplied as a **hot rolled round bar** in the diameter range of **19-38 mm**. This grade represents one of the benchmark materials for superior machinability in low-carbon applications. Its primary design purpose is to facilitate high-speed, high-volume production of components on automatic screw machines and CNC lathes with minimal tool wear and excellent chip-breaking characteristics. Supplied in the economical as-rolled condition, AISI 1211 offers an optimal combination of ease of machining, good surface finish, and adequate strength for numerous non-critical structural parts.
**Key Features & Advantages**
* **Excellent Machinability:** AISI 1211 is renowned for its superior machinability among low-carbon steels. The high sulfur and phosphorus content dramatically improves chip formation, allows for higher cutting speeds and feeds, and significantly extends tool life.
* **Cost-Effective Production:** The exceptional machinability translates directly to reduced cycle times, lower power consumption during machining, and decreased tooling costs, making it ideal for high-volume manufacturing.
* **Good Surface Finish:** Produces excellent surface quality on machined parts, often reducing or eliminating the need for secondary finishing operations.
* **Adequate Strength for Many Applications:** Provides sufficient mechanical strength for a wide range of non-structural, low-stress components.
* **Readily Available & Economical:** As a standard hot-rolled product, it is widely available and represents a cost-effective raw material choice.

### **1. Chemical Composition (Standard Conformance)**
The chemistry is specifically tailored to maximize machinability at the expense of other properties like weldability and transverse ductility.
| Element | Standard Range (%) | Key Function |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | ≤ 0.13 (max) | Low carbon ensures good ductility and weldability (though other elements limit it) and minimizes hardening. |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.60 – 0.90 | Combines with sulfur to form manganese sulfide (MnS) inclusions, which are crucial for chip breaking. |
| **Phosphorus (P)** | 0.07 – 0.12 | **Elevated.** Increases strength and hardness slightly, and most importantly, significantly improves machinability by promoting chip brittleness. |
| **Sulfur (S)** | 0.10 – 0.15 | **Elevated.** The primary free-machining additive. Forms MnS inclusions that act as internal stress raisers and chip breakers. |
| **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Base element. |
**Key International Standard Equivalents:**
* **UNS:** G12110
* **AISI/SAE:** 1211
* **ASTM:** A29 (Specification for Steel Bars, Carbon and Alloy, Hot-Wrought)
* **DIN (Germany):** 9SMn28 / 1.0715
* **EN (Europe):** 1.0715
* **JIS (Japan):** SUM22 (similar, but chemistry differs)

### **2. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (Hot Rolled, As-Rolled Condition)**
*Note: Properties are for reference in the as-rolled condition. AISI 1211 is almost exclusively chosen for its machinability, not its mechanical strength.*
| Property | Typical Value / Description |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Density** | 7.87 g/cm³ |
| **Machinability Rating** | **~100%** (The **industry benchmark**. 100% is defined as the machinability of AISI 1212; 1211 is very similar). |
| **Tensile Strength** | 380 – 480 MPa (55 – 70 ksi) |
| **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 275 – 345 MPa (40 – 50 ksi) |
| **Elongation (in 50mm)** | 15% – 25% *(Note: Ductility is highly anisotropic; longitudinal values are much higher than transverse)* |
| **Brinell Hardness (HB)** | 130 – 170 |
| **Surface Condition** | Standard hot-rolled finish with mill scale. |
---
### **3. Product Applications**
AISI 1211 hot rolled rounds are the material of choice for high-volume production of precision parts where machinability is the paramount concern.
* **Fasteners and Small Hardware:** Nuts, bolts, screws, washers, and other mass-produced fasteners.
* **Screw Machine Products:** A vast array of small, complex parts produced on automatic screw machines, such as connectors, fittings, bushings, and shafts for appliances, automotive, and hydraulic systems.
* **Electrical and Plumbing Fittings:** Conduit fittings, valve bodies, and couplings.
* **General Non-Critical Structural Parts:** Brackets, levers, and pins where high strength is not required.
* **Shafts and Pins:** Low-stress shafts, dowel pins, and hinge pins.
---
### **4. Critical Considerations & Limitations**
* **Poor Weldability:** **NOT RECOMMENDED FOR ANY FUSION WELDING.** The high sulfur and phosphorus content make it extremely prone to **hot cracking** (solidification cracking) and severe embrittlement in the weld and heat-affected zone.
* **Anisotropic Properties:** Mechanical properties, especially ductility and impact toughness, are highly directional. Transverse properties are significantly inferior to longitudinal properties due to the stringer-like MnS inclusions.
* **Not for Forging or Severe Cold Forming:** The high inclusion content and low ductility make it unsuitable for forging or applications requiring significant cold deformation.
* **Low Strength:** Should not be used for critical, high-stress, or load-bearing structural applications.
* **Comparison to 1212:** AISI 1211 has slightly higher phosphorus, which can offer a marginal machinability benefit in some operations but makes it slightly more brittle. 1212 is more common and often considered the universal free-machining standard.
**Disclaimer:** This material is engineered for manufacturability, not for mechanical performance in demanding service. Proper application requires understanding its significant limitations in weldability, ductility, and strength.
