AISI 1213 Steel, hot rolled, 19-38 mm round Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Introduction: AISI 1213 Steel, Hot Rolled Round Bar (19-38 mm)** **Overview** AISI 1213 is a highly specialized, low-carbon, resulfurized and rephosphorized free-machining steel supplied as a **hot rolled round bar** in the diameter range of **19-38 mm**. Distinguished by a significantly higher sulfur content than the standard AISI 1212, this grade is engineered for applications demanding the **absolute highest level of machinability** where surface finish and chip control are paramount. It represents the pinnacle of free-cutting performance in low-carbon steels, enabling exceptional productivity in high-speed, automated machining operations at the expense of mechanical properties, weldability, and transverse ductility. **Key Features & Advantages** * **Ultimate Machinability:** Contains the highest sulfur content among common AISI 12xx series steels, resulting in superior chip-breaking characteristics, reduced cutting forces, maximum possible cutting speeds, and extended tool life. Its machinability rating typically exceeds 120% of the AISI 1212 standard. * **Exceptional Surface Finish:** Produces outstanding surface quality on machined components, often eliminating the need for secondary finishing operations due to its fine, discontinuous chip formation. * **Optimized for High-Speed Production:** Specifically designed for maximum throughput in screw machines, CNC lathes, and other automated equipment where minimizing cycle time is critical. * **Cost-Effective for High-Volume Machining:** The reduction in machining time, tool wear, and energy consumption can lead to significant overall cost savings in large production runs. * **Consistent Performance:** Provides predictable machining behavior essential for automated manufacturing processes. --- ### **1. Chemical Composition (Standard Conformance)** The chemistry is specifically tailored for extreme machinability, featuring the highest sulfur content in its class. | Element | Standard Range (%) | Key Function | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | ≤ 0.13 (max) | Kept very low to minimize work hardening and maintain basic formability. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.70 – 1.00 | Elevated to combine with the high sulfur content and form abundant manganese sulfide (MnS) inclusions. | | **Phosphorus (P)** | 0.07 – 0.12 | **Elevated.** Increases strength slightly and promotes chip brittleness. | | **Sulfur (S)** | **0.24 – 0.33** | **Very High.** This is the **defining characteristic** of AISI 1213. The elevated sulfur content creates a high density of MnS inclusions, providing exceptional chip-breaking action and lubricity at the tool-chip interface. | | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Base element. | **Key International Standard Equivalents:** * **UNS:** G12130 * **AISI/SAE:** 1213 * **ASTM:** A29 (Specification for Steel Bars, Carbon and Alloy, Hot-Wrought) * **DIN (Germany):** 9SMn36 / 1.0718 * **EN (Europe):** 1.0718 * **JIS (Japan):** SUM22L (similar high-sulfur grade) --- ### **2. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (Hot Rolled, As-Rolled Condition)** *Note: Mechanical properties are secondary to machinability. This grade exhibits the most pronounced anisotropy in the 12xx series.* | Property | Typical Value / Description | | :--- | :--- | | **Density** | 7.87 g/cm³ | | **Machinability Rating** | **~130%** (Relative to AISI 1212=100%). Often cited as having the best machinability among standard carbon steels. | | **Tensile Strength** | 380 – 480 MPa (55 – 70 ksi) | | **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 275 – 345 MPa (40 – 50 ksi) | | **Elongation (in 50mm)** | **10% – 20%** *(Highly anisotropic; transverse ductility is extremely poor)* | | **Brinell Hardness (HB)** | 130 – 170 | | **Surface Condition** | Standard hot-rolled finish with mill scale. | --- ### **3. Product Applications** AISI 1213 hot rolled rounds are specified for the most demanding high-speed machining applications where machinability is the sole or primary selection criterion. * **Complex Screw Machine Parts:** Intricate components with thin walls or deep drilling requiring exceptional chip control to prevent bird nesting and tool breakage. * **High-Volume Fasteners:** Nuts, bolts, and special fasteners produced at maximum speeds. * **Electrical and Electronic Components:** Connector pins, terminals, and shielding parts where burr-free machining and excellent surface finish are critical. * **Plumbing and Hydraulic Fittings:** Valve bodies, couplings, and adapters requiring precision threads and smooth bores. * **Appliance and Automotive Non-Structural Parts:** High-volume decorative or functional components where surface appearance from machining is important. --- ### **4. Critical Considerations & Limitations** * **Extremely Poor Weldability:** **ABSOLUTELY UNWELDABLE.** The very high sulfur content makes it **catastrophically prone to hot cracking** and severe embrittlement. No fusion welding process is recommended. * **Severe Anisotropy and Low Ductility:** Exhibits the **poorest transverse ductility and impact toughness** of the standard free-machining grades due to the high density of elongated MnS inclusions. Parts are **not suitable for any application involving tensile or impact loads perpendicular to the rolling direction**. * **Very Low Strength:** Suitable only for non-structural, non-load-bearing applications. The high inclusion content significantly weakens the material. * **Poor Forgeability and Cold Formability:** Unsuitable for forging or any significant cold deformation due to its brittle nature. * **Potential for Porosity:** In some casting practices, the high sulfur can lead to micro-porosity, though this is generally controlled in quality bar production. * **Comparison to 1212:** AISI 1213 trades significantly worse mechanical properties (especially transverse) and weldability for a measurable improvement in machinability and surface finish. 1212 is the more balanced and widely used general-purpose free-machining grade. **Disclaimer:** AISI 1213 is a **specialist machining steel** pushed to the extreme of free-cutting performance. Its use must be strictly confined to **high-volume, non-structural, non-welded components** where the economic benefits of reduced machining cost unequivocally outweigh its severe mechanical limitations. Engineering approval is required for any application beyond simple fasteners and screw machine parts. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1213 Steel, hot rolled, 19-38 mm round Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <5006 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1213 Steel, hot rolled, 19-38 mm round Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
