### **Product Introduction: AISI 1213 Steel, Cold Drawn Round Bar (19-38 mm)**
**Overview**
AISI 1213 is the premier high-sulfur free-machining steel, supplied in its precision-engineered form as a **cold drawn round bar** in the diameter range of **19-38 mm**. This product combines the extreme machinability of AISI 1213—the grade with the highest sulfur content in the standard 12xx series—with the superior dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and enhanced strength provided by the cold drawing process. It represents the ultimate choice for manufacturers who prioritize **maximum production speed, superior chip control, and exceptional as-machined surface finish** above all other material considerations. This is a specialized steel designed to minimize machining cost per part in high-volume, precision applications.
**Key Features & Advantages**
* **Ultimate Machinability & Chip Control:** The very high sulfur content (0.24-0.33%) ensures the formation of a dense population of manganese sulfide (MnS) inclusions, producing short, brittle chips that are easily evacuated. This allows for the highest feasible cutting speeds and feeds, minimizing cycle time and tool wear. Machinability typically exceeds 130% of the AISI 1212 standard.
* **Superior Surface Quality:** The combination of free-cutting chemistry and a smooth, cold-drawn surface results in outstanding machined part finish, often eliminating secondary grinding or polishing operations.
* **Precision Dimensional Consistency:** Cold drawing provides tight diameter tolerances (per ASTM A108), excellent straightness, and uniform cross-section, ensuring reliable performance in automated feeding systems and CNC programs.
* **Enhanced Mechanical Properties:** The cold working process increases yield and tensile strength significantly compared to the hot-rolled condition, providing a stronger base material for components.
* **Optimized Production Economics:** Delivers the lowest possible machining cost per part in suitable applications, justifying its use through dramatic reductions in cycle time, tool consumption, and energy use.

### **1. Chemical Composition (Standard Conformance)**
The chemistry is defined by its exceptionally high sulfur content, optimized for chip-breaking performance.
| Element | Standard Range (%) | Key Function |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | ≤ 0.13 (max) | Kept minimal to prevent work hardening and ensure good chip formation. |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.70 – 1.00 | Present in sufficient quantity to fully combine with the high sulfur, forming the critical MnS inclusions. |
| **Phosphorus (P)** | 0.07 – 0.12 | **Elevated.** Contributes to chip brittleness and slightly increases strength. |
| **Sulfur (S)** | **0.24 – 0.33** | **The Defining Element.** This very high sulfur content creates a prolific amount of soft MnS inclusions that lubricate the cut and ensure discontinuous chips. |
| **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Base element. |
**Key International Standard Equivalents:**
* **UNS:** G12130
* **AISI/SAE:** 1213
* **ASTM:** **A108** (Standard Specification for Steel Bar, Carbon and Alloy, Cold-Finished)
* **DIN (Germany):** 9SMn36 / 1.0718 (+C condition for cold drawn)
* **EN (Europe):** 1.0718
* **JIS (Japan):** SUM22L or SUM23 (similar high-sulfur free-cutting grades)

### **2. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (Cold Drawn Condition, 19-38 mm)**
*Note: This material is selected solely for manufacturing efficiency. Its mechanical properties are the most compromised in the free-machining family.*
| Property | Typical Value / Description |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Density** | 7.87 g/cm³ |
| **Machinability Rating** | **~130-140%** (Relative to AISI 1212=100%). The highest among standard carbon steel bars. |
| **Tensile Strength** | 415 – 550 MPa (60 – 80 ksi) |
| **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | **345 – 485 MPa (50 – 70 ksi)** – *Increased via cold work.* |
| **Elongation (in 50mm)** | **8% – 15%** *(Very low and highly anisotropic; transverse ductility is extremely poor)* |
| **Brinell Hardness (HB)** | 150 – 190 |
| **Surface Roughness (Ra)** | 1.6 – 3.2 μm (63 – 125 μin). Very bright, smooth finish. |
| **Tolerances** | Conforms to ASTM A108 cold-drawn tolerances for precision machining. |

### **3. Product Applications**
AISI 1213 cold drawn rounds are specified for the most demanding, high-speed, high-precision machining applications where machinability is the absolute priority.
* **Complex, High-Volume Screw Machine Parts:** Intricate components for automotive fuel injectors, hydraulic valves, pneumatic fittings, and surgical instruments where chip control and surface finish are critical to function and production speed.
* **Fasteners Produced at Maximum Speed:** Specialized nuts, bolts, and set screws where threading and head-forming operations benefit from extreme free-cutting action.
* **Electrical Connectors & Electronic Components:** Precision pins, terminals, and contacts requiring a burr-free, smooth surface finish straight from the machine.
* **Decorative or Functional Hardware:** Knobs, bezels, and appliance components where the as-machined appearance is important.
* **Any Component** where a **30% or greater reduction in machining time** (compared to 1212) justifies the material's significant limitations.
---
### **4. Critical Considerations & Limitations**
* **Non-Weldable:** **COMPLETELY UNWELDABLE BY ANY FUSION PROCESS.** The extremely high sulfur content guarantees severe **hot cracking** and embrittlement. Assembly must be 100% mechanical (threads, press fits, adhesives).
* **Extreme Anisotropy & Brittleness:** Mechanical properties are **highly directional and very poor in the transverse direction**. The material has **negligible impact toughness** and **very low ductility across the grain**. It **must not** be used for any structural, load-bearing, or dynamically loaded part.
* **Residual Stress Sensitivity:** Cold drawing introduces significant residual stresses. For parts with asymmetric machining, **stress relieving is strongly recommended** to prevent distortion, as the material has little inherent ductility to accommodate stress redistribution.
* **Limited to Non-Critical Applications:** Suitable **only** for non-structural, non-safety-critical components in benign environments. Its corrosion resistance is also typical of plain carbon steels.
* **Comparison to 1212 CD:** AISI 1213 CD offers measurably better machinability and surface finish but at the cost of significantly worse transverse properties and weldability. It is a specialty grade, whereas 1212 CD is the general-purpose free-machining standard.
* **Optimal Tooling:** While tool life is generally excellent, the high sulfur content can sometimes promote built-up edge on certain tool materials under specific conditions; optimal tool geometry and grade selection are recommended.
**Disclaimer:** **AISI 1213 Cold Drawn is a specialized manufacturing efficiency material, not an engineering steel.** Its application must be rigorously justified by a detailed cost-benefit analysis of machining savings versus its severe limitations in weldability, ductility, toughness, and strength. It is unsuitable for any application where part integrity under load is a concern.
