### **Product Introduction: AISI 1215 Steel, Drawn, Ground, and Polished (DGP) Round Bar (19-38 mm)**
**Overview**
AISI 1215 is a low-carbon, resulfurized and rephosphorized free-machining steel, and this product is supplied in its most premium precision form: **Drawn, Ground, and Polished (DGP) round bar** in the diameter range of **19-38 mm**. This multi-step finishing process—cold drawing followed by centerless grinding and final polishing—produces a material with exceptional dimensional accuracy, a mirror-like surface finish, and superb straightness. It combines the excellent machinability inherent to AISI 1215 with the geometric perfection required for high-precision applications such as linear motion shafts, hydraulic pistons, and bearing surfaces, often serving as a "ready-to-use" component with minimal further processing.
**Key Features & Advantages**
* **Exceptional Dimensional Accuracy and Surface Finish:** Offers the tightest possible tolerances (typically within ±0.013 mm or h6/h7 IT grades) and a very low surface roughness (Ra ≤ 0.4 μm / 16 μin), eliminating the need for finish grinding or honing.
* **Superior Straightness and Geometric Perfection:** Precision grinding ensures near-perfect roundness and straightness, critical for high-speed rotating or linear motion applications to prevent vibration and premature wear.
* **Excellent Machinability:** Retains the very good free-machining characteristics of AISI 1215 (Machinability ~90% of 1212), allowing for efficient final machining of ends, threads, or grooves when needed.
* **Enhanced Surface Integrity:** The grinding and polishing process removes surface defects and decarburization from earlier processing, providing a clean, uniform, and hardened surface layer with improved fatigue resistance.
* **Cost-Effective for Precision Applications:** Eliminates multiple secondary machining and finishing steps, reducing total manufacturing lead time and cost for components requiring high-quality bearing surfaces.

### **1. Chemical Composition (Standard Conformance)**
The chemistry is similar to 1212 but with lower sulfur, offering a balance of machinability and slightly improved mechanical properties.
| Element | Standard Range (%) | Key Function |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | ≤ 0.09 (max) | Very low carbon to maximize machinability and prevent hardening during final grinding/polishing. |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.75 – 1.05 | Combines with sulfur to form manganese sulfide (MnS) inclusions for chip breaking. |
| **Phosphorus (P)** | 0.04 – 0.09 | **Elevated.** Improves machinability and chip formation. |
| **Sulfur (S)** | **0.26 – 0.35** | **Very High.** The primary free-machining element. This higher sulfur (vs. 1212) provides excellent chip-breaking capability. **Note:** Some standards may list 1215 with lower sulfur; this specification reflects the high-sulfur variant for optimal machining. |
| **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Base element. |
**Key International Standard Equivalents:**
* **UNS:** G12150
* **AISI/SAE:** 1215
* **ASTM:** A108 (Standard for Cold-Finished Bars, with supplementary requirements for grinding/polishing)
* **ASTM:** A29
* **DIN (Germany):** 9SMn36 / 1.0718 (similar high-sulfur free-cutting grade)
* **EN (Europe):** 1.0718
* **JIS (Japan):** SUM22L or SUM23

### **2. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (Drawn, Ground & Polished Condition, 19-38 mm)**
| Property | Typical Value / Description |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Density** | 7.87 g/cm³ |
| **Machinability Rating** | **~90-95%** (Relative to AISI 1212=100%). Very good free-machining characteristics. |
| **Tensile Strength** | 450 – 550 MPa (65 – 80 ksi) |
| **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | **370 – 450 MPa (54 – 65 ksi)** |
| **Elongation (in 50mm)** | 15% – 25% |
| **Surface Hardness** | 150 – 200 HB (Surface may be slightly harder due to cold work) |
| **Surface Roughness (Ra)** | **≤ 0.4 μm (16 μin)**. Mirror-like finish is standard; values as low as 0.2 μm (8 μin) are achievable. |
| **Diameter Tolerance** | **±0.013 mm** or h6/h7 IT grade is typical. Exceptional precision. |
| **Straightness** | Typically ≤ 0.5 mm per meter (0.005 in/ft). |

### **3. Product Applications**
AISI 1215 DGP rounds are the material of choice for applications requiring a combination of precision-ground geometry, fine surface finish, and good machinability.
* **Linear Motion Shafts and Guide Rods:** For ball bushings, linear bearings, and precision slides in automation, machine tools, and 3D printers.
* **Hydraulic and Pneumatic Piston Rods:** Where a fine surface finish is required for effective sealing and low friction.
* **Rollers and Pins:** Precision rollers for conveyors, cam followers, and dowel pins where exact diameter and smoothness are critical.
* **Shafts for Bearings and Bushings:** Directly installable shafts for light to moderate duty bearing applications.
* **General Precision Machined Components:** Parts that require a premium, ready-made precision surface, with only end-working or threading needed.
---
### **4. Critical Considerations & Limitations**
* **Non-Weldable:** **NOT SUITABLE FOR WELDING.** The high sulfur and phosphorus content make it extremely prone to hot cracking. Assembly must be mechanical.
* **Anisotropic Properties:** Exhibits directional properties typical of free-machining steels, with lower transverse ductility. Best suited for applications where primary loads are axial.
* **Limited High-Stress Applications:** The low carbon content limits ultimate tensile strength. Not suitable for highly stressed structural components or severe impact loading.
* **Residual Stress:** The cold drawing and grinding processes introduce residual surface stresses. For critical applications, stress relieving may be specified, though the polishing process often provides a degree of stress relief.
* **Surface Integrity:** While the polished surface is excellent for bearing applications, the underlying free-machining microstructure (with MnS inclusions) is not as clean as that of bearing steels (e.g., 52100), which may limit its use in very high-pressure or fatigue-critical bearing applications.
* **Comparison to 1212 DGP:** 1215 (high-sulfur variant) offers slightly better machinability, while 1212 offers slightly better consistency and is more common. For DGP products, the processing often outweighs the minor chemical differences.
