### **Product Introduction: AISI 1215 Steel, Turned and Polished (T&P) Round Bar (19-38 mm)**
**Overview**
AISI 1215 in the **Turned and Polished (T&P)** condition represents a premium-grade, precision-engineered product supplied as round bars in the **19-38 mm** diameter range. This specific finishing process involves cold drawing followed by **centerless turning** (or precision turning) to achieve exact dimensions, and then **polishing** to impart an exceptionally smooth, bright surface finish. Unlike standard cold drawn material, T&P bars offer superior dimensional accuracy, enhanced surface integrity, and near-elimination of surface imperfections, making them ideal for applications where the bar surface itself serves as a functional bearing or sealing surface, or where exceptional cosmetic appearance and precise fit are required with minimal further processing.
**Key Features & Advantages**
* **Exceptional Dimensional Accuracy & Surface Finish:** Turning ensures precise diameter control (tighter than standard cold drawn tolerances), while polishing produces a very low surface roughness (typically Ra ≤ 0.8 μm / 32 μin), resulting in a bright, mirror-like finish.
* **Superior Surface Integrity:** The turning process removes surface decarburization, seams, and other imperfections inherent in hot-rolled or drawn stock. The final polished surface is clean, uniform, and free of scale, providing excellent consistency for plating, coating, or direct use.
* **Excellent Straightness & Geometric Perfection:** The turning process inherently improves straightness and roundness, critical for components in linear motion systems or rotating assemblies to prevent vibration and ensure proper fit.
* **Retained Excellent Machinability:** Maintains the very good free-machining characteristics of AISI 1215, allowing for efficient secondary machining of ends, threads, grooves, or other features without compromising the pristine finished surface of the main body.
* **Reduced Manufacturing Steps & Cost:** Eliminates the need for customers to perform rough turning, grinding, or extensive polishing operations, acting as a near-net-shape pre-finished material that streamlines production.

### **1. Chemical Composition (Standard Conformance)**
The composition is optimized for free-machining, featuring very low carbon and high sulfur.
| Element | Standard Range (%) | Key Function |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | ≤ 0.09 (max) | Very low carbon ensures maximum machinability and prevents hardening during the turning/polishing process. |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.75 – 1.05 | Essential to combine with sulfur and form manganese sulfide (MnS) inclusions for chip breaking. |
| **Phosphorus (P)** | 0.04 – 0.09 | Improves machinability and chip brittleness. |
| **Sulfur (S)** | 0.26 – 0.35 | **Primary free-machining agent.** High sulfur content ensures excellent chip-breaking performance during any subsequent machining. |
| **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Base element. |
**Key International Standard Equivalents:**
* **UNS:** G12150
* **AISI/SAE:** 1215
* **ASTM:** **A108** (Standard Specification for Steel Bar, Carbon and Alloy, Cold-Finished). The T&P condition is a specialized finish often supplied to customer-specific requirements or commercial standards.
* **DIN (Germany):** 9SMn36 / 1.0718
* **EN (Europe):** 1.0718
* **Common Spec.:** "1215 Turned, Polished, and Peeled" or "1215 TGP" (Turned, Ground, Polished – a similar but more precise process).

### **2. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (Turned & Polished Condition, 19-38 mm)**
*Note: The turning process removes the cold-drawn surface layer, so mechanical properties may more closely resemble those of the core material, slightly reducing the strain-hardening effect seen on the surface of standard cold-drawn bars.*
| Property | Typical Value / Description |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Density** | 7.87 g/cm³ |
| **Machinability Rating** | **~90-95%** (Relative to AISI 1212=100%). Excellent. |
| **Tensile Strength** | 400 – 530 MPa (58 – 77 ksi) |
| **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | **330 – 450 MPa (48 – 65 ksi)** |
| **Elongation (in 50mm)** | 15% – 25% |
| **Brinell Hardness (HB)** | 135 – 180 |
| **Surface Roughness (Ra)** | **0.4 – 1.6 μm (16 – 63 μin)**. Consistently smooth, polished finish. |
| **Diameter Tolerance** | Typically **±0.05 mm** or better, depending on specification. Superior to standard cold drawn. |
| **Straightness** | Excellent, typically ≤ 0.5 mm/m (0.006 in/ft). |

### **3. Product Applications**
AISI 1215 T&P rounds are specified for applications requiring a precision-finished outer diameter ready for assembly or minimal final machining.
* **Shafts for Bearings and Bushings:** Ready-to-install shafts for light to moderate duty applications where the turned surface acts as the bearing journal.
* **Rollers and Pins:** Precision rollers, guide pins, hinge pins, and dowel pins where a smooth, accurate surface is critical for function and fit.
* **Hydraulic and Pneumatic Component Bodies:** Valve spools, plungers, and cylinders where the polished surface aids in sealing and reduces friction.
* **Fastener Stock for Premium Parts:** Bar stock for manufacturing high-quality bolts, studs, or pins where surface finish and dimensional consistency are paramount.
* **Decorative or Cosmetic Trim Components:** Parts where the bright, polished finish is part of the final product appearance.
* **General Precision Components:** Any part where starting with a pre-finished, accurate diameter reduces overall machining time and improves quality.
---
### **4. Critical Considerations & Limitations**
* **Non-Weldable:** **NOT SUITABLE FOR FUSION WELDING.** The high sulfur content makes it prone to hot cracking. Assembly must be mechanical.
* **Anisotropic Properties:** Like all free-machining steels, it exhibits directional properties with lower transverse ductility. Best suited for applications with primarily axial loads.
* **Core vs. Surface Properties:** The turning process removes the hardest, cold-worked surface layer. The final surface hardness and strength are slightly lower than on a standard cold-drawn bar but more uniform.
* **Not for High-Stress Structural Use:** The low carbon content limits ultimate strength. It is not suitable for highly stressed, structural, or safety-critical load-bearing components.
* **Cost Premium:** The additional turning and polishing operations make it more expensive than standard cold-drawn stock, but this cost is offset by reduced downstream processing.
* **Comparison to Cold Drawn (CD):** T&P offers better surface finish, tighter tolerances, and better straightness than CD. Comparison to **Drawn, Ground, & Polished (DGP)**: T&P is generally more economical than DGP and suitable where the extreme precision and finish of DGP are not required. Turning is faster and removes more material than grinding.
**Disclaimer:** AISI 1215 Turned and Polished is a **precision-finished manufacturing material**. It is engineered for applications where dimensional accuracy, surface quality, and machinability are the primary drivers. Its use is not recommended for welded assemblies or high-integrity structural applications.
