AISI 1527 Steel, Hot Rolled Bar (UNS G15270) Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Introduction: AISI 1527 / UNS G15270 Hot Rolled Steel Bar** **Overview** AISI 1527 (UNS G15270) is a high-manganese, medium-carbon alloy steel supplied in the economical **hot rolled bar** condition. As a member of the "15xx" series, it is distinguished by a high manganese content (1.20-1.50%), which classifies it as a **manganese alloy steel**, and a carbon content calibrated for robust strength. This composition provides superior hardenability, strength, and wear resistance compared to plain carbon steels like 1030 or 1035. Supplied in the as-rolled state, AISI 1527 serves as a versatile and cost-effective raw material for components that will undergo further processing such as forging, machining, and subsequent heat treatment (normalizing, quenching & tempering, or surface hardening). It is a workhorse grade for demanding applications requiring a balance of toughness and high load-bearing capacity. **Key Features & Advantages** * **High Strength & Hardenability:** The synergistic effect of medium carbon and high manganese provides excellent hardenability, allowing the steel to be through-hardened effectively in substantial cross-sections to achieve high tensile and yield strength. * **Good Toughness & Impact Resistance:** The manganese promotes a fine-grained structure, which, combined with proper heat treatment, results in good impact toughness and resistance to shock loading. * **Good Wear Resistance:** In the heat-treated condition, it offers good resistance to abrasion and surface wear, making it suitable for components in sliding or rolling contact. * **Excellent Forgeability:** Highly suitable for hot forging into complex shapes, with the manganese aiding high-temperature ductility and contributing to good final forged properties. * **Cost-Effective Performance:** Offers a significant performance advantage over standard carbon steels and serves as a more economical alternative to chromium-molybdenum alloy steels for many applications where extreme depth of hardening is not required. --- ### **1. Chemical Composition (Standard Conformance)** | Element | Standard Range (%) | Key Function | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.22 – 0.29 | Provides core strength and hardenability. This level is optimized for achieving high strength after heat treatment while maintaining forgeability and reasonable weldability. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.20 – 1.50 | **Primary Alloying Element.** Significantly enhances hardenability, allowing deeper and more uniform hardening. Also contributes substantially to strength and refines the grain structure. | | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.040 (max) | Residual element, kept low to ensure good toughness. | | **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.050 (max) | Residual element, kept low. **This is not a free-machining steel.** | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.15 – 0.35 | Deoxidizer; contributes to strength. | | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Base element. | **Key International Standard Equivalents:** * **UNS:** G15270 * **AISI/SAE:** 1527 * **ASTM:** A29 (Standard Specification for Steel Bars, Carbon and Alloy, Hot-Wrought) * **ASTM:** A519 (for mechanical tubing) * **DIN (Germany):** ~1.1158 / 38Mn6 (Close analogue) * **EN (Europe):** 1.1158 / 38Mn6 * **JIS (Japan):** SMn438 (Similar, JIS G4052) --- ### **2. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (Hot Rolled, As-Rolled Condition)** *Note: These are typical properties in the as-supplied state. Final service properties are developed through heat treatment.* | Property | Typical Value / Description | | :--- | :--- | | **Density** | 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³) | | **Tensile Strength** | 560 – 700 MPa (81 – 102 ksi) | | **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 330 – 480 MPa (48 – 70 ksi) | | **Elongation (in 50mm)** | 18% – 25% | | **Reduction of Area** | 40% – 55% | | **Brinell Hardness (HB)** | 170 – 220 | | **Machinability (Comparison)** | Fair (~50% of AISI 1212). Requires appropriate tooling and conditions. | | **Surface Condition** | Standard hot-rolled finish with mill scale. | --- ### **3. Product Applications** AISI 1527 hot rolled bars are widely used as starting stock for high-strength, durable components across multiple industries. * **Forged Components:** Crankshafts, connecting rods, lever arms, yoke arms, and other high-stress forged parts. * **Shafts and Axles:** Drive shafts, axle shafts, transmission shafts, and roller shafts that will be through-hardened. * **Gear and Sprocket Blanks:** Stock for medium to heavy-duty gears, pinions, and sprockets destined for heat treatment. * **High-Strength Fasteners:** Bolts, studs, and pins requiring tensile strengths exceeding those of standard low-carbon fasteners. * **Agricultural and Earth-Moving Equipment:** Pins, bushings, cutting edges, and track links subject to severe wear and impact. * **General Heavy-Duty Machinery Parts:** Brackets, hydraulic cylinder components, and structural members. --- ### **4. Important Considerations** * **Not a Free-Machining Steel:** Contains low sulfur. Machining in the as-rolled state is feasible but more demanding than for free-cutting steels. Normalizing prior to extensive machining is often recommended to improve consistency and tool life. * **Heat Treatment is Essential for Service Properties:** This steel achieves its full potential (high strength, wear resistance) through heat treatment such as normalizing (for grain refinement), quenching & tempering (for high strength), or surface hardening (flame/induction). * **Mill Scale:** The surface oxide layer must be removed via pickling, shot blasting, or machining prior to most finishing operations, coating, or welding. * **Weldability:** Can be welded with proper procedures. **Preheating (150-260°C / 300-500°F) is strongly recommended** for most thicknesses to prevent hydrogen-induced cracking in the hardenable heat-affected zone. Use of low-hydrogen electrodes and post-weld heat treatment is advisable for critical applications. * **Comparison to 1027/1035:** AISI 1527 offers vastly superior hardenability and strength due to its high manganese content. * **Comparison to 1526:** AISI 1527 is essentially identical in composition to 1526 within standard specification ranges. They are often considered the same grade for practical purposes, with "1527" being a common designation. * **"H" Grade Availability:** An **AISI 1527H** grade exists for applications requiring guaranteed hardenability bands (per SAE J1268), ensuring predictable and consistent heat treatment results for critical components. --- **Disclaimer:** The information provided is based on typical industry specifications for reference purposes. Actual properties may vary based on manufacturer, production parameters, and final processing. For engineering applications, always consult certified material test reports and relevant application standards. The as-rolled condition is a starting point; final part performance is determined by subsequent manufacturing and heat treatment processes. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1527 Steel, Hot Rolled Bar (UNS G15270) Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <5036 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1527 Steel, Hot Rolled Bar (UNS G15270) Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
