AISI 1547 Steel, hot rolled, 19-32 mm (0.75-1.25 in) round Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Introduction: AISI 1547 Steel, Hot Rolled Round Bar (19-32 mm / 0.75-1.25 in)** **Overview** AISI 1547 is a high-manganese, medium-high carbon alloy steel supplied in the economical **hot rolled** condition as round bars in the diameter range of **19-32 mm (0.75-1.25 in)**. As a member of the "15xx" series, its defining characteristic is a significantly elevated manganese content (1.35-1.65%) combined with a higher carbon level, classifying it as a **manganese alloy steel**. This composition provides exceptional hardenability, high strength potential, and good wear resistance. Supplied in the as-rolled state, this product serves as a versatile and robust raw material for demanding components that will undergo forging, machining, and subsequent heat treatment (normalizing, quenching & tempering), particularly suited for applications requiring a combination of strength, toughness, and abrasion resistance. **Key Features & Advantages** * **High Strength and Exceptional Hardenability:** The synergy of high carbon and manganese provides deep hardenability, enabling effective through-hardening of this diameter range to achieve very high tensile and yield strength. * **Good Toughness for its Strength Level:** When properly heat treated (quenched and tempered), it can achieve a favorable balance of strength and impact resistance, crucial for components subject to dynamic or shock loading. * **Good Wear and Abrasion Resistance:** In the hardened and tempered condition, it offers good resistance to surface wear, making it suitable for components in sliding or rolling contact under load. * **Excellent Forgeability:** Highly suitable for hot forging operations. The manganese improves high-temperature workability, making it a preferred choice for high-strength forged parts. * **Cost-Effective Alloy Solution:** Provides a performance level approaching that of some low-alloy steels (e.g., 4140) at a typically lower material cost, making it an economical choice for many heavy-duty applications. --- ### **1. Chemical Composition (Standard Conformance)** | Element | Standard Range (%) | Key Function | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.43 – 0.51 | **High carbon content.** Primary source of hardness and strength. Enables the formation of high-carbon martensite upon quenching. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.35 – 1.65 | **Primary Alloying Element.** Dramatically increases hardenability, allowing deep and uniform hardening of this diameter range. Contributes significantly to strength and grain refinement. | | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.040 (max) | Residual element, kept very low to maintain toughness. | | **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.050 (max) | Residual element, kept low. **This is not a free-machining steel.** | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.15 – 0.35 | Deoxidizer; contributes to strength. | | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Base element. | **Key International Standard Equivalents:** * **UNS:** G15470 * **AISI/SAE:** 1547 * **ASTM:** A29 (Standard Specification for Steel Bars, Carbon and Alloy, Hot-Wrought) * **ASTM:** A519 (for mechanical tubing) * **DIN (Germany):** ~1.1213 / C55 (but with much lower Mn; no direct equivalent) * **EN (Europe):** No direct equivalent. Similar in concept to a higher carbon version of 38Mn6 (1.1167). * **JIS (Japan):** SMn445 (Similar, JIS G4052) --- ### **2. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (Hot Rolled, As-Rolled Condition, 19-32 mm)** *Note: These are typical properties in the as-supplied state. Final service properties are developed through heat treatment.* | Property | Typical Value / Description | | :--- | :--- | | **Density** | 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³) | | **Tensile Strength** | 650 – 820 MPa (94 – 119 ksi) | | **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 400 – 580 MPa (58 – 84 ksi) | | **Elongation (in 50mm)** | 15% – 20% | | **Reduction of Area** | 35% – 50% | | **Brinell Hardness (HB)** | 200 – 255 | | **Machinability (As-Rolled)** | **Poor (~30-35% of AISI 1212).** Machining in this state is demanding; normalizing or annealing prior to machining is strongly advised. | | **Surface Condition** | Standard hot-rolled finish with mill scale. | --- ### **3. Product Applications** AISI 1547 hot rolled rounds in this size range are used for high-strength, wear-resistant components across heavy industries. * **High-Stress Shafts and Axles:** Drive shafts, axle shafts, and transmission shafts that will be through-hardened for maximum strength and fatigue resistance. * **Forged Components:** Crankshafts, connecting rods, lever arms, and other high-strength forged parts requiring toughness. * **Wear-Resistant Parts:** Plow shares, scraper blades, bucket teeth, crusher rolls, and other mining/earth-moving components. * **Gears and Sprockets:** Medium to heavy-duty gears and sprockets that are through-hardened for wear resistance. * **High-Strength Fasteners:** Large bolts, studs, and pins requiring very high tensile strength (beyond standard Grade 8). * **Agricultural and Construction Equipment:** Pins, bushings, and cutting edges subject to severe abrasion and impact. --- ### **4. Important Considerations** * **Not a Free-Machining Steel:** Contains low sulfur. Machining in the as-rolled state is very difficult. **Normalizing or annealing prior to any significant machining is essential** to improve machinability and tool life. * **Heat Treatment is Mandatory for Service:** This steel derives its value from heat treatment. It is supplied soft (as-rolled) for safe forming/machining and must be quenched & tempered to achieve its high-strength properties. **Immediate tempering after quenching is critical** to avoid cracking and achieve toughness. * **Quenching Sensitivity:** Due to its high carbon content, it is more susceptible to quench cracking than lower-carbon grades. Proper quenchant selection (typically oil), controlled agitation, and correct part design are vital. * **Mill Scale:** The surface oxide layer must be removed via pickling, shot blasting, or machining prior to further processing or welding. * **Weldability:** **Poor. Not recommended for general fabrication.** If welding is unavoidable, it requires extensive preheating (300-400°C / 575-750°F), low-hydrogen electrodes, strict control of interpass temperature, and a controlled post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) cycle to avoid severe cracking in the HAZ. * **Comparison to 1045/1050:** AISI 1547 offers vastly superior hardenability and strength, allowing full through-hardening of this diameter range. * **Comparison to 4140:** 1547 can achieve similar or higher hardness but generally has lower toughness and tempering resistance. 1547 is more economical; 4140 offers better overall engineering properties for the most critical applications. * **"H" Grade Availability:** An **AISI 1547H** grade exists for applications requiring guaranteed hardenability bands (SAE J1268), ensuring predictable heat treatment results for critical components. --- **Disclaimer:** The information provided is based on standard industry specifications. Actual properties may vary. This material requires expertise in heat treatment and machining. For engineering applications, always consult certified material test reports and relevant application standards. The as-rolled condition is a starting point only; final performance is entirely dependent on controlled subsequent processing. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1547 Steel, hot rolled, 19-32 mm (0.75-1.25 in) round Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <5043 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1547 Steel, hot rolled, 19-32 mm (0.75-1.25 in) round Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
