AISI 4047 Steel Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Introduction: AISI 4047 Alloy Steel** **AISI 4047** is a high-quality, medium-high carbon, chromium-molybdenum (Cr-Mo) alloy steel. It belongs to the same versatile family as 4042 but features a higher carbon content, which results in **greater ultimate tensile strength, higher achievable hardness, and improved wear resistance** after proper heat treatment. Its excellent hardenability, provided by chromium and molybdenum additions, ensures these properties can be achieved in moderately large cross-sections. AISI 4047 is an ideal choice for high-stress components requiring a superior combination of strength, fatigue resistance, and durability. #### **1. Chemical Composition** The composition is the key driver of its enhanced properties compared to lower-carbon grades like 4042. | Element | Content Range (%) | Primary Function | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.45 - 0.50 | **Higher carbon** provides increased hardness, strength, and wear resistance. It is the primary differentiator from 4042. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.70 - 0.90 | Increases hardenability and strength. | | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.035 | Impurity (kept low for toughness). | | **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.040 | Impurity (affects machinability). | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.15 - 0.35 | Deoxidizer, increases strength. | | **Chromium (Cr)** | 0.20 - 0.35 | Enhances hardenability, wear resistance, and provides mild corrosion resistance. | | **Molybdenum (Mo)** | 0.15 - 0.25 | Improves hardenability, strength at high temperatures, and reduces temper embrittlement. | #### **2. Physical & Mechanical Properties** Properties are highly dependent on heat treatment. The values below are typical for the quenched and tempered condition. * **Density:** 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³) * **Melting Point:** ~ 1420°C (2590°F) * **Modulus of Elasticity:** 190 - 210 GPa (29 x 10⁶ psi) * **Thermal Conductivity:** ~ 42.6 W/m·K (at 100°C) **Typical Mechanical Properties (After Quenching & Tempering):** * **Tensile Strength:** 900 - 1200 MPa (130 - 175 ksi) *[Higher than 4042]* * **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** 700 - 950 MPa (102 - 138 ksi) * **Elongation (in 50mm):** 12 - 18% * **Reduction in Area:** 35 - 50% * **Hardness:** Can be reliably hardened to **50-55 HRC** (quenched), and tempered to various lower hardness levels (e.g., 28-45 HRC) for specific applications. * **Impact Toughness (Charpy V-notch):** Good, but generally slightly lower than 4042 at equivalent hardness due to higher carbon content; proper tempering is crucial to optimize toughness. #### **3. Heat Treatment** AISI 4047 responds excellently to standard heat treatments: * **Annealing:** Full annealing at ~843°C (1550°F) followed by slow cooling to improve machinability. * **Normalizing:** Heated to ~871°C (1600°F) and air-cooled to refine grain structure. * **Hardening (Quenching):** Austenitizing at ~815-845°C (1500-1550°F) followed by quenching in oil. **Oil quenching is standard** due to its high hardenability to minimize distortion and cracking risk. * **Tempering:** **Essential** after quenching. Reheated to 205-650°C (400-1200°F) to achieve the desired balance of hardness, strength, and toughness. Higher tempering temperatures increase toughness but reduce hardness/strength. #### **4. Product Applications** AISI 4047 is used in demanding applications where its higher strength and wear resistance are critical. * **Automotive & Truck:** **Heavy-duty gears** (transmission, differential), **high-strength shafts** (crankshafts, axle shafts for heavy vehicles), **piston pins**, **high-performance connecting rods**, and **suspension components**. * **Agricultural & Construction Machinery:** Highly stressed gears, pinions, track links, and roller bearings. * **Oil & Gas Industry:** **Heavy-duty drill collar joints**, **tool joints**, **mandrels**, and other downhole tools requiring high strength and resistance to abrasion. * **Forgings & Tools:** Used for high-strength forgings and as a material for **large wrenches**, **vises**, **clamps**, and non-cutting tools. * **Aerospace:** Certain high-strength landing gear components and structural parts (in specific grades/qualifications). #### **5. International Standards & Equivalent Grades** AISI 4047 is recognized under various international standards. | Standard | Designation | Note | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **AISI / SAE (USA)** | 4047 | Primary designation | | **UNS** | G40470 | | | **ASTM (USA)** | A322, A331 (for bar) | | | **DIN (Germany)** | **46CrMo4** (Very close equivalent) | A direct counterpart with nearly identical composition. | | **EN (European)** | **1.7235** | Corresponds to 46CrMo4. | | **JIS (Japan)** | SCM445 | Slightly different spec, but a common equivalent. | | **GB (China)** | 46CrMo | | #### **6. Key Advantages & Considerations** * **Advantages:** * **Higher Strength & Hardness:** Superior to 4042, enabling use in more demanding applications. * **Excellent Wear Resistance:** Ideal for components in frictional contact. * **Good Hardenability:** Allows through-hardening of substantial sections. * **Good Fatigue Strength:** Suitable for dynamically loaded parts. * **Considerations:** * **Toughness:** Requires careful tempering to maintain adequate toughness, as higher carbon can reduce impact resistance. * **Machinability:** Slightly lower than lower-carbon alloy steels in the annealed condition. * **Weldability:** Fair to poor; requires pre-heat and post-weld heat treatment due to high carbon equivalent. **Disclaimer:** The information provided is for general reference. Specific properties and performance depend on exact composition, manufacturing process, heat treatment parameters, and section size.
