# **Product Datasheet: AISI E50100 High-Carbon Chromium Bearing Steel**
## **1. Material Overview**
**AISI E50100** is a **high-carbon, high-chromium alloy steel** specifically designed for **bearing applications**. The "E" prefix indicates its classification as a **"Electric Furnace" steel**, historically denoting a higher purity manufacturing process, while the "50100" designation reflects its approximate chromium (0.50%) and carbon (1.00%) content. This steel is engineered to provide an optimal combination of **high contact fatigue strength, wear resistance, and dimensional stability** after heat treatment, making it a standard material for industrial rolling element bearings.
## **2. Key Material Concept**
The performance of E50100 stems from its precise chemistry and microstructure:
- **High Carbon (~1.0%)**: Provides the necessary carbon for forming a high volume of hard, wear-resistant carbides and achieving high hardness after heat treatment.
- **Chromium (~0.5%)**: Enhances hardenability, promotes the formation of uniform chromium carbides, and improves corrosion/oxidation resistance compared to plain carbon steels.
- **Manufacturing Control**: Produced to strict cleanliness standards (low non-metallic inclusions) to prevent fatigue crack initiation under cyclic Hertzian contact stresses typical in bearing operation.
## **3. International Standard & Cross-References**
- **Primary Standard**: **ASTM A295** (Standard Specification for High-Carbon Anti-Friction Bearing Steel)
- **AISI/SAE Designation**: E50100 (covered in SAE J404 and J1268 for hardenability versions)
- **UNS Designation**: **G50986**
- **ISO Standard**: **ISO 683-17**: 2014, Type 5 (through-hardening bearing steel)
- **DIN (German)**: **1.3505** (100Cr6) - Note: 100Cr6 has a slightly higher Cr range (0.90-1.20%) and is not an exact equivalent.
- **JIS (Japanese)**: **SUJ2** (JIS G4805) - Very similar but with tighter control on residual elements.
- **Common "H" Variant**: **E50100H** - A hardenability-controlled version specified under ASTM A304.
## **4. Chemical Composition (% by Weight)**
| Element | Min (%) | Max (%) | Typical (%) | Function |
|--------------|---------|---------|-------------|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| **Carbon (C)** | 0.98 | 1.10 | 1.00 | Primary hardening; forms hard carbides for wear resistance. |
| **Manganese (Mn)**| 0.25 | 0.45 | 0.35 | Improves hardenability and strength. |
| **Phosphorus (P)**| - | 0.025 | ≤0.015 | Impurity; kept very low to prevent embrittlement. |
| **Sulfur (S)** | - | 0.025 | ≤0.015 | Impurity; kept very low to improve fatigue life. |
| **Silicon (Si)** | 0.15 | 0.35 | 0.25 | Deoxidizer; strengthens the matrix. |
| **Chromium (Cr)**| 0.40 | 0.60 | 0.50 | Enhances hardenability, forms uniform carbides, improves wear resistance.|
| **Nickel (Ni)** | - | 0.25 | ≤0.20 | Residual element; controlled to limit retained austenite. |
| **Copper (Cu)** | - | 0.35 | ≤0.25 | Residual element; controlled. |
| **Molybdenum (Mo)**| - | 0.10 | ≤0.05 | Residual element; controlled. |
## **5. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties**
### **A. Physical Properties (Annealed State)**
- **Density**: 7.83 g/cm³ (0.283 lb/in³)
- **Modulus of Elasticity**: 210 GPa (30.5 x 10⁶ psi)
- **Poisson's Ratio**: 0.29
- **Thermal Conductivity**: 46.6 W/m·K at 100°C
- **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion**: 11.9 x 10⁻⁶/°C (20-100°C)
- **Magnetic Properties**: Ferromagnetic.
### **B. Mechanical Properties by Condition**
| Condition | Hardness | Tensile Strength | Yield Strength | Elongation | Microstructure |
|-----------------------|------------------|------------------|----------------|------------|-----------------------------------|
| **Annealed (Spheroidized)** | 179 - 207 HBW | ~650 MPa | - | - | Spheroidized carbides in ferrite |
| **Hardened & Tempered** | 60 - 66 HRC | 2200 - 2600 MPa | - | Low (<2%) | Tempered martensite + carbides |
| **Case (Carburized)** | 60+ HRC (case) | - | - | - | High-carbon martensite + carbides |
**Typical Heat Treatment Cycle**:
- **Hardening**: Austenitize at 790-830°C (1450-1525°F) followed by oil quenching.
- **Tempering**: 150-200°C (300-400°F) for 1-2 hours to relieve stresses while maintaining high hardness (typically achieving 61-64 HRC).
- **Dimensional Stability**: Often subjected to sub-zero treatment (-70°C to -195°C) to transform retained austenite and stabilize dimensions.
## **6. Processing & Fabrication Characteristics**
- **Machinability (Annealed)**: **Fair**. The spheroidized annealed structure provides the best machinability, but high carbon content requires appropriate tooling and speeds.
- **Grindability**: **Excellent** in the hardened state, a critical feature for achieving precise bearing raceway geometry and finish.
- **Hardenability**: **Moderate to High**. Sufficient for through-hardening of sections up to ~25mm (1 inch) in diameter in oil.
- **Weldability**: **Very Poor**. Not recommended due to extremely high risk of cracking. Pre-heat and post-heat treatments are mandatory if welding is unavoidable.
- **Forging**: Forge at 1050-850°C (1920-1560°F). Do not forge below 850°C. Requires slow cooling after forging to prevent cracking.
- **Decarburization Sensitivity**: High. Must be processed with adequate stock allowance or in protective atmospheres to prevent surface carbon loss.
## **7. Primary Applications**
AISI E50100 is the workhorse material for a wide range of rolling contact components:
- **Ball & Roller Bearings**: Inner and outer rings for deep groove ball bearings, cylindrical roller bearings, and needle roller bearings.
- **Bearing Components**: Balls, rollers, and races for automotive, industrial, and agricultural machinery.
- **Precision Components**: Aircraft control bearings, instrument bearings, and spindle bearings.
- **Other Wear Parts**: Gauge blocks, cam followers, rollers for linear motion systems, and high-wear machine tool components.
## **8. Available Forms & Quality Designations**
- **Forms**: Hot-rolled or cold-drawn bars (rounds, flats), tubes, forgings, and wire.
- **Quality Levels** (per ASTM A295):
- **Standard Quality**: For general purpose bearings.
- **Extra Quality**: For high-duty bearings with stricter inclusion ratings.
- **Ultra-Clean Quality**: For critical applications (e.g., aerospace, high-speed spindles) with the most stringent control of inclusions and microstructure.
**Procurement Note**: For bearing applications, specifications should reference **ASTM A295** and clearly state the required quality level, hardenability ("H" grade if needed), and any special cleanliness requirements (e.g., using **ASTM E45** or **ISO 4967** inclusion ratings).
---
**Disclaimer**: This datasheet provides characteristic information for material selection. For critical bearing applications, collaboration with bearing manufacturers and steel producers is essential to specify the appropriate quality, heat treatment, and testing requirements. Mechanical properties are highly dependent on the final heat treatment process and part geometry.
