# **Product Name:** JIS SPHD Nonresulfurized Carbon Steel, Hot Rolled (Drawing Quality)
**Overview**
JIS SPHD is a **drawing quality, nonresulfurized, low-carbon steel** specified in the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). As part of the commercial hot-rolled steel family, it offers **superior ductility and more consistent formability** compared to the basic SPHC grade. The "D" in SPHD stands for **Drawing**, indicating its enhanced suitability for more demanding cold-forming operations, particularly pressing and drawing. Like SPHC, it is characterized by its nonresulfurized chemistry, meaning it has controlled, low sulphur content. SPHD is a versatile, formability-focused steel used in applications where the material must undergo significant plastic deformation without failure, and where a higher level of consistency in properties is desired over SPHC.
**Key International Standards & Designation**
* **Primary Standard:** **JIS G 3131:2022** - Hot-rolled mild steel plate, sheet and strip.
* **Grade Designation:** **SPHD**
* **S:** Steel (Kō).
* **P:** Plate (板, Ita).
* **H:** Hot rolled (熱間圧延, Nekkan Atsuen).
* **D:** **Drawing** quality.
* **Quality Hierarchy:** SPHD represents an intermediate quality level between **SPHC (Commercial)** and **SPHE (Extra-Deep Drawing)**. It provides a better balance of consistent formability and cost than SPHE.
* **Common International Equivalents:**
* **ASTM:** **A620** (Drawing Quality, Hot-Rolled Sheet) is a close functional equivalent. Also comparable to **SAE 1006** with drawing quality controls.
* **DIN/EN:** **DC03** (cold-rolled equivalent) or **DD11** (hot-rolled equivalent, drawing quality).
* **GB/T:** **SPHD** (directly adopted designation) or **08Al** (for deep drawing applications).
**Chemical Composition (Ladle Analysis, % by weight, typical/guaranteed ranges for SPHD)**
Chemistry is controlled more tightly than SPHC to ensure formability.
* **Carbon (C):** **≤ 0.10%** (Very low, maximizes ductility).
* **Manganese (Mn):** **≤ 0.50%** (Low and controlled).
* **Phosphorus (P):** **≤ 0.040%** (Tighter than SPHC for better formability).
* **Sulphur (S):** **≤ 0.035%** (Lower than SPHC, contributing to better edge formability and ductility - this is the "nonresulfurized" characteristic).
* **Note:** Some mills may offer a narrower compositional range or apply microalloying (e.g., Ti, Nb) for better control of aging and grain size.
**Physical & Mechanical Properties (Typical for hot-rolled, drawing quality)**
While JIS G 3131 does not mandate guaranteed mechanical properties for SPHC/SPHD/SPHE, SPHD as a drawing quality grade is typically supplied with **agreed-upon or typical mechanical properties** to ensure performance in forming dies.
* **Yield Strength (YP):** **≈ 160 - 220 MPa** (Tends to be lower and more consistent than SPHC).
* **Tensile Strength (TS):** **≈ 270 - 350 MPa**.
* **Elongation (El):** **≥ 35% - 42%** (Typically guaranteed minimums are agreed upon; values are higher and more consistent than SPHC).
* **r-value (Plastic Strain Ratio):** May be reported or targeted by mills (e.g., typical average >1.0) to indicate drawing performance.
* **n-value (Strain Hardening Exponent):** May also be controlled for consistent forming behavior.
**Product Features**
1. **Enhanced & Consistent Formability:** The primary feature. Controlled chemistry and processing result in higher, more uniform elongation and better performance in **moderate to severe drawing, stretching, and forming** operations compared to SPHC. Reduces the risk of splitting or cracking in complex parts.
2. **Good Surface for Forming:** While still supplied with mill scale, the substrate is more homogeneous, leading to more consistent behavior in presses.
3. **Good Weldability:** Excellent weldability due to very low carbon content.
4. **Non-Aging or Stabilized Options:** Often available as **"Stabilized"** (e.g., with Titanium or Niobium treatment) to minimize yield point elongation and prevent stretcher strain marks (Lüders lines) during forming, providing a better surface finish on formed parts.
**Typical Applications**
SPHD is used for components that require more reliable forming than SPHC can guarantee.
* **Automotive Components:** **Inner door panels, wheel housings, seat frames, brackets, and other moderately complex pressed parts**.
* **Appliance & Furniture:** **Washing machine tubs, refrigerator liners, cabinet parts, and furniture frames** requiring deep draws or complex bends.
* **General Metal Goods:** **Electrical enclosures, switch boxes, containers, and deeper-drawn housings**.
* **Pipe & Profiles:** As feedstock for **welded tubes and roll-formed sections** where consistent ductility is key.
**Available Forms & Processing**
* **Forms:** **Hot-rolled sheets and strips** in coils, commonly used as feedstock for pickling and cold rolling, or supplied directly for hot-rolled forming.
* **Surface Condition:** **Hot-rolled, with mill scale**. It is the preferred feedstock for **pickling lines** to produce high-quality Pickled & Oiled (PO) or hot-rolled annealed (HRA) material for critical forming.
* **Processing:** **Excellent for pressing, deep drawing, stamping, and bending.** Can be welded and cut easily.
---
**Critical Selection & Procurement Note**
* **Formability-Driven Selection:** Choose SPHD over SPHC when part design involves **significant stretching, drawing, or complex multi-stage forming** where SPHC might exhibit inconsistent behavior or higher scrap rates.
* **Agreed Properties:** Unlike structural steels, procurement often involves agreeing on **typical or minimum mechanical properties (especially Elongation)** with the supplier. These should be documented.
* **Stabilized vs. Non-Stabilized:** For parts requiring a smooth, defect-free surface after forming (without Lüders lines), specify **"Stabilized" SPHD**. This may involve a slight cost premium.
* **Surface Consideration:** For critical formed parts, the hot-rolled mill scale surface is often removed via pickling prior to forming.
* **Not a Structural Grade:** Like SPHC, it is not a property-guaranteed structural steel. Do not use it for load-bearing calculations where minimum yield strength is required.
* **Procurement Specification:** Clearly state **JIS G 3131 SPHD**, thickness, width, and any special requirements (e.g., stabilized, agreed elongation minimum, coil weight).
