# Wingate Alloys Winco HCC High Carbon, High Chrome Tool and Die Steel
## Product Overview
**Winco HCC** is a premium-grade, high-carbon, high-chromium cold work tool and die steel manufactured through advanced melt processing and thermal treatment technologies. As a specialized variant of the AISI D-type tool steel family, Winco HCC is engineered to deliver exceptional wear resistance, high compressive strength, and dimensional stability for demanding cold work applications. The steel's composition provides excellent through-hardening capability, making it suitable for tools requiring deep hardening with minimal distortion.
This material is characterized by its outstanding combination of high hardness, excellent carbide distribution, and good machinability in the annealed condition. Winco HCC is specifically designed for applications where resistance to abrasive wear, pressure, and corrosion are critical performance factors, particularly in long-run production environments.
## Chemical Composition (Typical Weight %)
| Element | Carbon (C) | Chromium (Cr) | Molybdenum (Mo) | Vanadium (V) | Manganese (Mn) | Silicon (Si) |
|---------|------------|---------------|-----------------|--------------|----------------|--------------|
| Content | 1.50-1.60 | 11.50-12.50 | 0.70-1.00 | 0.90-1.10 | 0.30-0.60 | 0.20-0.40 |
## Key Physical & Mechanical Properties
**Typical Properties in Hardened & Tempered Condition:**
- **Hardness Range:** 58-62 HRC (typical working hardness)
- **Density:** 7.70 g/cm³
- **Thermal Conductivity:** 20.0 W/m·K at 20°C
- **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion:** 10.5 × 10⁻⁶/K (20-100°C)
- **Young's Modulus:** 210 GPa
- **Transverse Rupture Strength:** 2,200-2,600 MPa
- **Compressive Strength:** 2,600-3,000 MPa
- **Wear Resistance:** Excellent (superior to conventional D2 steel)
**Heat Treatment Characteristics:**
- **Annealed Hardness:** 215-235 HB
- **Austenitizing Temperature Range:** 980-1050°C (1796-1922°F)
- **Quenching:** Air or oil quenching suitable
- **Tempering Range:** 180-550°C (356-1022°F) with hardness peak around 500°C
- **Dimensional Stability:** Excellent, with minimal distortion during heat treatment
## Heat Treatment Guidelines
**Annealing:** Heat to 850-870°C (1562-1598°F), hold for 2-4 hours per inch of thickness, then slow cool to 600°C (1112°F) at 10-20°C/hour, followed by air cooling.
**Stress Relieving:** 650-700°C (1202-1292°F) for 2 hours after rough machining.
**Preheating:** Two-stage preheating recommended: 650°C (1202°F) and 850°C (1562°F).
**Austenitizing:** 980-1050°C (1796-1922°F) depending on desired balance of hardness and toughness. Soak time: 20-30 minutes per inch of cross-section.
**Quenching:** Air cooling is adequate for most sections up to 4 inches; oil quenching for larger sections or complex geometries.
**Tempering:** Immediate tempering after quenching. Typical tempering at 180-250°C (356-482°F) for high hardness (60-62 HRC) or 500-550°C (932-1022°F) for maximum toughness (58-60 HRC). Double tempering strongly recommended.
