Crucible Steel CPM® REX® M35HCHS High Speed Steel, AISI M35 Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: # **Product Introduction: Crucible Steel CPM® REX® M35HC (HS) High Speed Steel (AISI M35)** Crucible CPM® REX® M35HC (HS) is a premium, cobalt-bearing, particle metallurgy (PM) high-speed steel that represents a significant enhancement over the conventional AISI M35 grade. The designation signifies its manufacturing process (**CPM**), its cobalt content (**M35**), its high-carbon formulation (**HC**), and its optimization for high-speed machining (**HS**). This grade is engineered to deliver an **exceptional combination of high hot hardness (red hardness), superior wear resistance, and improved toughness** compared to its ingot-cast counterpart, making it a top-tier choice for demanding machining operations. By utilizing the Crucible Particle Metallurgy process, M35HC overcomes the inherent limitations of conventional M35, such as carbide segregation and inconsistent transverse toughness. The result is a material with a **homogeneous, ultra-fine microstructure** that provides isotropic properties, excellent dimensional stability, enhanced grindability, and more predictable performance. The "High Carbon" variant increases the volume of hard carbides, pushing wear resistance closer to that of higher-alloy grades like M42, while the cobalt content (typically ~5%) ensures outstanding resistance to thermal softening. --- ## **1. Chemical Composition (Weight %)** The composition is based on AISI M35 but with a higher carbon content and the homogeneity of PM processing. | **Element** | **Carbon (C)** | **Tungsten (W)** | **Molybdenum (Mo)** | **Chromium (Cr)** | **Vanadium (V)** | **Cobalt (Co)** | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Content** | **~1.10 - 1.20 (HC)** | 5.90 - 6.40 | 4.70 - 5.20 | 3.80 - 4.40 | 1.70 - 2.10 | **4.70 - 5.20** | | **Role** | **Enhanced level.** Higher than standard M35 (~0.90%C), enabling greater carbide formation for improved wear resistance and achievable hardness. | Contributes to hot hardness and wear resistance through solid solution strengthening and carbide formation. | Primary agent for hardenability and hot hardness; works synergistically with tungsten. | Ensures deep hardenability and provides oxidation resistance. | Forms hard vanadium carbides (VC) for abrasion resistance. The fine PM distribution maximizes their effectiveness. | **Key Differentiator.** Increases **hot hardness (red hardness)** by strengthening the ferrite matrix, allowing the tool to maintain its edge at elevated cutting temperatures. | *Note: Iron (Fe) constitutes the remainder. This is a PM version of a high-carbon M35 chemistry.* --- ## **2. Physical & Mechanical Properties** *Typical properties after optimal heat treatment to a working hardness of 65-67 HRC.* * **Density:** ~8.15 g/cm³ (0.294 lb/in³) * **Modulus of Elasticity:** ~215 GPa (31.2 x 10⁶ psi) * **Thermal Conductivity:** Moderate; cobalt content aids in some heat transfer. * **Hot Hardness (Red Hardness):** **Excellent.** Maintains a hardness above 62 HRC at temperatures exceeding **600°C (1110°F)**, outperforming non-cobalt PM grades like CPM M4 and bridging the gap towards M42 performance. * **Hardness (Typical Working Range):** **64 - 68 HRC.** Most commonly applied at **65-67 HRC**. * **Abrasion Resistance:** **Very High.** The combination of high carbon (HC), vanadium, and the uniform PM carbide distribution provides wear resistance superior to conventional M35 and approaching that of premium grades. * **Toughness:** **Good for its performance category.** The CPM process provides **significantly higher and more consistent toughness** than conventional M35, especially in the transverse direction. It offers better impact resistance than M42 at similar hardness levels. * **Grindability:** **Fair to Good (for a PM HSS).** The homogeneous microstructure makes it easier to grind than ingot-cast M35 of similar hardness, though still more challenging than simpler steels. CBN wheels are recommended. * **Dimensional Stability:** **Excellent.** The PM process ensures minimal and predictable distortion during heat treatment. --- ## **3. Heat Treatment** Precision heat treatment is required to unlock the full potential of this advanced PM steel. * **Annealing:** Heat to 870-900°C (1600-1650°F), slow cool. Annealed hardness: 260-300 HB. * **Stress Relieving:** 650-700°C (1200-1290°F), hold, then slow cool. * **Preheating:** **Mandatory.** Thorough double preheat: First at 540-650°C (1000-1200°F), then at 815-870°C (1500-1600°F). * **Austenitizing:** **1180-1210°C (2155-2210°F).** A common range is **1190-1200°C (2175-2190°F)**. Precise control is essential. * **Quenching:** **Gas/Pressure quenching** (vacuum or controlled atmosphere) is strongly preferred for optimal dimensional stability and uniformity. * **Tempering:** **Mandatory Multiple Tempers.** Temper immediately after quenching. **Minimum of three tempers**, each for 2 hours, is standard. **Typical tempering range: 540-565°C (1005-1050°F).** A strong secondary hardening response is observed. * **Sub-Zero Treatment:** **Highly recommended** (-80°C to -100°C / -112°F to -148°F) between quenching and first temper to maximize hardness and stability. --- ## **4. Key Applications** CPM REX M35HC (HS) is engineered for high-performance machining where a balance of red hardness, wear resistance, and reliability is critical. * **High-Speed Machining of Alloy Steels:** End mills, drills, and milling cutters for machining tough alloy steels, stainless steels, and high-temperature alloys at productive speeds. * **Gear and Thread Manufacturing:** Premium gear hobs and thread mills for high-strength materials. * **Die & Mold Machining:** Tools for milling pre-hardened mold steels. * **Machining Abrasive Cast Irons and Composites.** * **General High-Performance Tooling:** Where the enhanced consistency and toughness of the PM version justify its use over conventional M35 or M42 in applications prone to intermittent cutting. --- ## **5. International Standards & Cross-References** CPM REX M35HC is a proprietary, PM-enhanced version of AISI M35 with high carbon. * **AISI/SAE:** **M35 (High Carbon, PM Version)** * **UNS:** T11335 (base reference) * **European (EN):** The conventional equivalent is **HS 6-5-2-5 / 1.3243**. The PM-HC version has no direct EN equivalent. * **Japanese (JIS):** **SKH55** (for conventional M35). The PM-HC version is a proprietary upgrade. * **ISO:** HS6-5-2-5 * **Common Trade Names/Comparisons:** Often compared to other PM super high-speed steels. It is positioned between **CPM M4** (higher toughness, lower hot hardness) and **CPM M42** (higher hot hardness, lower toughness). --- ## **6. Advantages & Limitations** **Advantages (vs. Conventional M35):** * **Superior Toughness & Consistency:** Isotropic properties eliminate weak directions, reducing chipping risk. * **Enhanced Wear Resistance:** The high carbon content and fine carbide distribution boost abrasion resistance. * **Excellent Hot Hardness:** Cobalt content provides sustained performance at high cutting temperatures. * **Improved Grindability & Dimensional Stability:** Benefits of the PM process. * **Reliable, Predictable Performance:** Ideal for critical applications in automated production. **Limitations:** * **High Cost:** PM processing and cobalt content result in a premium price. * **Not the Ultimate in Hot Hardness:** While excellent, it is surpassed by higher-cobalt grades like M42. * **Grinding Still Requires Care:** Needs proper abrasives and techniques. * **Targeted Application:** Its full benefits are realized in severe, high-value applications. --- ## **7. Summary** **Crucible CPM® REX® M35HC (HS) is a sophisticated, engineered solution that elevates the proven M35 chemistry to a new level of performance and reliability through particle metallurgy.** It is designed for manufacturers who require the hot hardness of a cobalt steel but cannot afford the unpredictable brittleness or performance variation of conventional ingot material.
