### **Product Introduction: Latrobe DuraTech™ 20CV Powder Metallurgy Premium Stainless Tool Steel**
**Overview**
Latrobe DuraTech™ 20CV is a high-end, martensitic stainless tool steel manufactured through the advanced powder metallurgy (PM) process. This technology creates an ultra-fine, homogeneous microstructure with a uniform distribution of hard, complex carbides. 20CV is renowned for its exceptional combination of **high wear resistance (approaching that of premium carbide grades)**, excellent corrosion resistance, and good toughness for its hardness level. It is designed to outperform conventional stainless tool steels like 440C and D2 in the most demanding applications where corrosion, wear, and dimensional stability are critical.
The alloy is a modification of the CPM S90V composition, optimized to deliver an unparalleled balance of properties for high-performance tooling and wear components.
**Key Advantages**
* **Outstanding Wear & Abrasion Resistance:** Exceptionally high vanadium carbide content provides wear resistance that is multiple times greater than 440C and significantly better than D2, rivaling some cemented carbides.
* **Superior Corrosion Resistance:** High chromium content (20%) provides excellent resistance to corrosion and rust, comparable to 440C stainless steel, making it suitable for wet environments, food processing, and chemical exposure.
* **Excellent Edge Retention:** The primary driver for its use in cutlery and sharp-edge applications, maintaining a sharp cutting edge far longer than conventional steels.
* **High Hardness Capability:** Can be hardened to very high levels while maintaining useful toughness.
* **Dimensionally Stable:** Exhibits minimal size change during heat treatment, crucial for precision tools and components.
* **Uniform PM Microstructure:** Ensures consistent, predictable performance and grindability in all directions, free from carbide banding.
**International Standards & Specifications**
* **AISI / SAE:** Not a standard AISI grade. It is a proprietary PM steel.
* **UNS:** S26990
* **European / ISO:** Similar to **1.4116 (PM)** with enhanced vanadium, but no direct equivalent. Falls under stainless tool steel category.
* **Common Trade Names & Equivalents:** **CPM-20CV** (Crucible Industries), **Böhler M390** (Uddeholm/Böhler), **CTS-204P** (Carpenter Technology). These are considered **industry equivalents** with virtually identical compositions and performance profiles.
**Chemical Composition (Typical Weight %)**
The composition is meticulously balanced to form a high volume of hard, stable vanadium and chromium carbides within a corrosion-resistant matrix.
| Element | Carbon (C) | Chromium (Cr) | Vanadium (V) | Molybdenum (Mo) | Tungsten (W) |
| :--- | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: |
| **% Range** | 1.90 | 20.00 | 4.00 | 1.00 | 0.60 |
*Note: Also contains balanced amounts of Silicon (Si), Manganese (Mn), and may contain trace elements.*
**Physical & Mechanical Properties (Annealed & Hardened)**
* **Density:** ~7.80 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³)
* **Annealing Temperature:** 900 - 925°C (1650 - 1700°F), followed by slow cooling. Typical annealed hardness: ~240 HB.
* **Hardening (Austenitizing) Temperature:** 1105 - 1160°C (2025 - 2120°F). Precise temperature control is critical for optimal properties.
* **Tempering Temperature:** 480 - 595°C (900 - 1105°F) – Typically double or triple tempered. Can be tempered at cryogenic temperatures to enhance properties.
* **Achievable Hardness (Hardened & Tempered):** **58 - 62 HRC** is the standard operational range. It is most commonly used at **59-61 HRC** for the ideal balance of edge retention and toughness.
* **Corrosion Resistance:** Excellent for a tool steel, due to its high chromium content and the PM process which creates a more chemically homogeneous structure.
**Typical Product Applications**
Latrobe DuraTech™ 20CV is specified for applications where premium performance justifies its cost.
1. **High-End Cutting Tools & Blades:**
* **Premium Knives & Cutlery:** High-end pocket knives, kitchen knives, and surgical blades where supreme edge retention and stain resistance are paramount.
* **Industrial Blades:** Slitter knives, rotary cutter blades, and granulator blades for processing abrasive, corrosive, or food-grade materials (e.g., plastics, composites, food, textiles).
* **Punches and Dies:** For forming and blanking corrosive or abrasive materials, such as certain plastics, adhesives, and composites.
2. **Wear Parts in Corrosive Environments:**
* **Food & Chemical Processing:** Components like valve seats, pump shafts, and bearing sleeves that require both wear and corrosion resistance.
* **Mold Inserts & Cores:** For plastic injection molds where glass-filled or abrasive resins are used, and corrosion from coolant or released acids is a concern.
* **Precision Gauges & Tooling:** Where dimensional stability and resistance to rust in non-climate-controlled environments are required.
**Processing Notes**
* **Machining (Annealed State):** Must be machined with rigid setups and carbide tooling. Its high wear resistance in the annealed state makes it more challenging to machine than standard tool steels.
* **Heat Treatment:** Requires precise, often vacuum or atmosphere-controlled, heat treatment to prevent decarburization and achieve optimal properties. Pre-hardening and multiple tempering cycles are standard.
* **Grinding:** Requires careful grinding techniques with sharp, premium aluminum oxide or diamond/CBN wheels, adequate coolant, and light passes to avoid generating excessive heat and compromising the steel's properties.
**Conclusion**
Latrobe DuraTech™ 20CV stands at the pinnacle of stainless tool steel performance. It is the material of choice when neither conventional tool steel nor carbide can meet the simultaneous requirements of extreme wear resistance, good corrosion protection, and the ability to be fabricated into complex tools. For critical applications in cutlery, industrial cutting, and corrosive wear environments, 20CV delivers a service life and performance level that often justifies its premium cost.
