Astralloy Astralloy-V® Air Hardened Wear Steel Plate Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: **Astralloy-V® Air-Hardened Wear-Resistant Steel Plate** **Product Overview** Astralloy-V® is a premium-grade, high-carbon, high-chromium air-hardening wear-resistant steel plate designed for applications demanding exceptional resistance to abrasion, impact, and deformation. Its proprietary chemistry and air-hardening capability allow it to achieve extreme surface hardness while maintaining good toughness and dimensional stability, offering superior service life in severe wear environments compared to conventional quenched and tempered or Brinell-hardened steels. **Key Features & Advantages** * **Extreme Wear Resistance:** Achieves a typical as-hardened surface hardness of **58-62 HRC** (approx. 650-700 HB), providing outstanding resistance to abrasive wear. * **Air-Hardening Capability:** Hardens fully in still air after austenitizing, minimizing the risk of distortion, cracking, and size limitations associated with water or oil quenching. This simplifies heat treatment and allows for the fabrication of large or complex components. * **High Impact Toughness:** The balanced microstructure provides significantly better impact resistance than many cast abrasion-resistant materials of similar hardness, reducing the risk of catastrophic failure under impact loads. * **Good Machinability & Weldability:** In the annealed condition, it can be machined, formed, and welded with proper procedures, enabling fabrication before the final air-hardening treatment. * **Through-Hardening:** Suitable for sections where wear occurs on multiple sides or edges. **Chemical Composition (Typical Weight %)** The precise composition is proprietary, but Astralloy-V® is based on a high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel formulation. A representative analysis is: * **Carbon (C):** 0.45 - 0.60% * **Chromium (Cr):** 4.75 - 5.50% * **Molybdenum (Mo):** 0.90 - 1.40% * **Vanadium (V):** 0.15 - 0.50% * **Manganese (Mn):** 0.50 - 1.00% * **Silicon (Si):** 0.20 - 0.80% * **Other:** May include small additions of Nickel (Ni) and other elements for enhanced hardenability and toughness. **Physical & Mechanical Properties** * **Hardness (As-Hardened):** 58 - 62 HRC (Typical). Achieved by austenitizing at 1750-1850°F (954-1010°C) followed by air cooling. * **Hardness (Annealed):** Typically 200-250 HB, supplied for fabrication. * **Yield Strength (at Hardness 60 HRC):** > 200 ksi (≈ 1380 MPa) * **Ultimate Tensile Strength:** > 230 ksi (≈ 1585 MPa) * **Density:** 0.28 lb/in³ (≈ 7.75 g/cm³) * **Modulus of Elasticity:** 29 x 10⁶ psi (≈ 200 GPa) **Heat Treatment** * **Austenitizing:** 1750 - 1850°F (954 - 1010°C), followed by **still air cooling** to below 150°F (66°C). * **Tempering:** Mandatory double tempering at 350 - 500°F (177 - 260°C) for 2 hours per cycle minimum is required to achieve optimal toughness and stress relief. **Do not temper above 900°F (482°C)** to avoid significant softening. * **Annealed Condition:** Supplied at ~200-250 HB for fabrication. **International Standards & Equivalents** While Astralloy-V® is a proprietary brand, its composition and performance are analogous to and often exceed specifications for standard air-hardening tool/wear steel grades. The closest international equivalents include: * **ASTM A681:** Similar to Grade A8 (approximately). * **UNS:** T20813 * **DIN / EN / Werkstoff Nr.:** 1.2363 / X100CrMoV5-1 (Close approximation; Astralloy-V® is more optimized for wear). * **JIS G4404:** SKD6 (Similar category). **Note:** Astralloy-V® offers proprietary enhancements and consistent quality that may not be fully captured by standard grade specifications. **Typical Applications** Astralloy-V® is ideal for components subjected to severe sliding abrasion, impact, and metal-to-metal wear, including: * **Mining & Mineral Processing:** Liners for chutes, hoppers, bins, truck beds, shovel components, crusher parts, wear plates. * **Construction & Earthmoving:** Excavator bucket tips, adapters, wear edges, liner plates for heavy equipment. * **Aggregate & Cement Industry:** Crusher rolls, hammers, breaker plates, pulverizer components, classifier blades. * **Forestry & Recycling:** Knives, anvils, shredder tips, wear parts in chippers and grinders. * **Metalworking:** Shearing blades, forming dies, wear strips in high-abrasion environments. **Availability** Available in plate form in various thicknesses, widths, and lengths. Supplied in the annealed condition for fabrication, followed by user's final heat treatment (austenitizing and tempering) to achieve full wear properties. --- **Disclaimer:** The information provided is for reference purposes. Properties can vary based on section size and specific heat treatment practices. For critical applications, consult the manufacturer's latest technical data sheets and processing recommendations.
