ATI Allvac® M-50 Specialty Steel, Heat Treatment: 1107°C (2025°F) Q+T Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Datasheet: ATI Allvac® M-50 High Temperature Bearing Steel (Q+T Condition)** **ATI Allvac® M-50** is a high-carbon, high-chromium molybdenum secondary hardening martensitic stainless steel. It is specifically engineered for demanding applications requiring exceptional high-temperature hardness, wear resistance, and fatigue strength. The **1107°C (2025°F) Quench and Temper (Q+T)** heat treatment process optimizes these properties, making it a premier material for aerospace and high-performance bearing components. #### **1. Key Characteristics & Advantages** * **Excellent High-Temperature Performance:** Maintains high hardness and mechanical strength at operating temperatures up to ~425°C (800°F), surpassing conventional bearing steels like 52100. * **Superior Wear Resistance & Contact Fatigue Life:** Ideal for rolling contact applications under high stress. * **Good Corrosion Resistance:** Offers better corrosion resistance than standard tool steels due to its chromium content, though it is not a fully stainless grade. * **Deep Hardenability:** Air hardening capability minimizes distortion during heat treatment. * **Secondary Hardening:** Achieves peak hardness after tempering due to the formation of fine alloy carbides. #### **2. Standard Specifications & International Designations** * **UNS:** K88195 * **AISI/ASTM:** M50 * **AMS:** 6491 (Steel Bars, Forgings, and Rings) * **EURONORM:** 1.3541 (Similar, not identical) * **ISO:** Not directly standardized under a common ISO number, but specified in aerospace and bearing standards worldwide (e.g., SAE AS 2301). #### **3. Chemical Composition (Typical, Weight %)** | Element | Content (%) | Element | Content (%) | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.80 - 0.85 | **Molybdenum (Mo)** | 4.00 - 4.50 | | **Chromium (Cr)** | 3.75 - 4.25 | **Vanadium (V)** | 0.90 - 1.10 | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.20 - 0.35 | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.20 - 0.35 | | **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.010 | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.020 | | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | #### **4. Heat Treatment: 1107°C (2025°F) Quench & Temper** This specific thermal processing route is critical for achieving the desired microstructure and properties: * **Austenitizing:** Heat to **1107°C (2025°F)** and hold to dissolve carbides and achieve solution saturation. * **Quenching:** Cool in **air or positive pressure gas** (air hardening) to form a martensitic structure with minimal distortion. * **Tempering (Double or Triple Temper):** Typically performed at **510°C to 595°C (950°F to 1100°F)**. The steel exhibits **secondary hardening**, where hardness increases during the first temper due to precipitation of fine alloy carbides (Mo, V). Subsequent tempers relieve stresses and ensure stability. * **Final Hardness:** Typically **HRC 60-65** after proper tempering. #### **5. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (After Q+T)** * **Density:** 7.83 g/cm³ (0.283 lb/in³) * **Modulus of Elasticity:** 210 - 215 GPa (30 - 31 x 10⁶ psi) * **Thermal Expansion Coefficient:** 11.0 x 10⁻⁶/°C (20-100°C) * **Hardness:** **62 - 65 HRC** * **Ultimate Tensile Strength:** ~ 2,240 MPa (325 ksi) * **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** ~ 2,070 MPa (300 ksi) * **Fracture Toughness:** Good for its high hardness level. #### **6. Primary Applications** ATI Allvac® M-50 in the Q+T condition is predominantly used in critical aerospace and high-performance industrial components: * **Aircraft Engine Main Shaft Bearings:** Especially in the high-temperature zones of jet engines. * **Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) Bearings** * **High-Speed Machine Tool Spindles** * **Precision Gears and Shafts** requiring high wear resistance. * **Critical Components in Helicopter Transmissions.** * **Specialized Rolling Contact Components** in extreme environments. #### **7. Availability & Processing Notes** * **Forms Available:** Premium melted (VIM-VAR) billets, bars, forgings, and rings. * **Machining:** Best performed in the annealed condition (~ 200 HB). Grinding after heat treatment is standard for final dimensional and surface finish accuracy. * **ATI Allvac® Expertise:** ATI offers this material with guaranteed cleanliness levels and tailored processing to meet stringent aerospace specifications for fatigue-critical applications. --- **Disclaimer:** The information provided is for reference purposes.
