"Maraging" refers to the age-hardening of a low-carbon, martensitic structure. This specific grade is designed to achieve an ultimate tensile strength of approximately 200 ksi (1380 MPa) after final heat treatment. The process of Solution Annealing followed by Aging, as specified, develops an optimal combination of ultra-high strength, excellent fracture toughness, and good dimensional stability. **Designated Heat Treatment** * **Solution Anneal:** 815°C (1500°F) for 1 hour, followed by Air Cooling. * *Purpose:* To dissolve alloying elements into a homogeneous austenitic structure and form a soft, low-carbon, lath martensite upon cooling. This state is machinable and formable. * **Age Hardening (Aging):** 480°C (900°F) for 3 hours, followed by Air Cooling. * *Purpose:* To precipitate intermetallic compounds (e.g., Ni₃Ti, Ni₃Mo, Fe₂Mo) within the martensitic matrix, inducing a significant increase in strength and hardness while retaining good toughness. **Chemical Composition (Typical Weight %, ASTM A538 / AMS 6512)** | Element | Content (%) | Element | Content (%) | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Nickel (Ni)** | 18.0 - 19.0 | **Cobalt (Co)** | 8.0 - 9.0 | | **Molybdenum (Mo)**| 3.0 - 3.5 | **Titanium (Ti)** | 0.15 - 0.25 | | **Aluminum (Al)** | 0.05 - 0.15 | **Carbon (C)** | ≤ 0.03 max | | **Manganese (Mn)**| ≤ 0.10 max | **Silicon (Si)** | ≤ 0.10 max | | **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.010 max | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.010 max | | **Boron (B)** | 0.003 (min) | **Zirconium (Zr)**| 0.01 - 0.02 | | **Calcium (Ca)** | 0.05 (max) | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | *Note:* Low carbon and impurity levels are critical for superior toughness and weldability. **Physical & Mechanical Properties (After Aging at 480°C for 3 hrs)** * **Density:** 8.0 g/cm³ (0.289 lb/in³) * **Melting Point:** ~ 1415°C (2580°F) * **Mechanical Properties:** * **Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS):** 1380 - 1450 MPa (200 - 210 ksi) * **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** 1350 - 1400 MPa (196 - 203 ksi) * **Elongation (% in 4D):** 10 - 12% * **Reduction of Area:** 50 - 60% * **Hardness:** 48 - 50 HRC * **Fracture Toughness (KIc):** High, typically 80 - 110 MPa√m * **Thermal Properties:** * **Thermal Expansion Coefficient (20-100°C):** 10.8 x 10-6/K * **Thermal Conductivity (Aged):** ~ 19.0 W/m·K **Key Characteristics & Advantages** 1. **Ultra-High Strength-to-Weight Ratio:** Exceptional strength at relatively low weight. 2. **Excellent Toughness:** Superior fracture toughness and resistance to crack propagation compared to quenched-and-tempered steels of similar strength. 3. **Minimal Distortion:** The aging process involves no phase transformation, resulting in very low distortion and excellent dimensional stability during heat treatment. 4. **Good Weldability:** Can be welded in the solution-annealed condition without preheating, and aged post-welding to restore full strength in the weld zone. 5. **Simple Heat Treatment:** Does not require rapid quenching, minimizing risk of cracking and distortion. **Primary Applications** This material is specified for critical, high-performance applications where reliability, strength, and toughness are paramount: * **Aerospace & Defense:** Landing gear components, missile casings, rocket motor cases, helicopter undercarriages, aircraft forgings. * **Tooling & Manufacturing:** High-performance die-casting dies, injection molding inserts, extrusion tools requiring high wear resistance and fatigue strength. * **Precision Machinery:** Shafts, gears, and fasteners in demanding environments. * **Racing & High-Performance Automotive:** Critical engine components, drive systems, and suspension parts. **International & Industry Standards** * **ASTM A538 / A538M:** Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Alloy Steel, 18% Nickel Maraging Grades. * **AMS 6512:** Aerospace Material Specification for Maraging Steel Bar, Forgings, and Rings 18Ni-9Co-5Mo-0.65Ti, Solution Annealed. * **AMS 6514:** Same composition as AMS 6512, but in the Aged condition (commonly at 485°C/905°F). * **UNS K92890:** Unified Numbering System designation. * **ISO 683-13:** Heat-treatable steels, alloy steels and free-cutting steels — Part 13: Wrought maraging steels. * **MIL-S-46850:** Military Specification (obsolete but referenced). **Disclaimer:** The values provided are typical. Specific properties may vary based on the exact production lot, section size, and furnace conditions. For critical design purposes, consult certified test reports from the material supplier or conduct independent testing. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI Grade 18Ni (200) Maraging Steel, solution annealed at 815°C (1500°F) for 1 hour, air cooled, aged at 480°C (900°F) for 3 hours Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <7318 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI Grade 18Ni (200) Maraging Steel, solution annealed at 815°C (1500°F) for 1 hour, air cooled, aged at 480°C (900°F) for 3 hours Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
