Assab Steels ASSAB 88 Cold Work Steel Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Datasheet: Assab Steels ASSAB 88 Air-Hardening Cold Work Die Steel** **Assab Steels ASSAB 88** is a premium, multi-purpose chromium-molybdenum-vanadium air-hardening cold work die steel, developed to offer an outstanding balance between high wear resistance and good toughness. It is considered a versatile and highly reliable upgrade over many conventional grades, designed to deliver longer tool life, better performance under stress, and reduced risk of cracking in demanding applications. #### **1. Key Characteristics & Advantages** * **Excellent Balance of Wear Resistance & Toughness:** Optimized alloy composition provides superior wear resistance compared to standard grades like A2 or D2, while maintaining better toughness than high-carbon, high-chromium steels. This leads to less chipping and longer service life. * **High Compressive Strength:** Capable of withstanding very high pressures without deformation, making it ideal for forming, coining, and stamping applications. * **Good Dimensional Stability:** As an air-hardening steel, it exhibits minimal distortion and predictable size change during heat treatment, crucial for precision tools and progressive dies. * **Deep & Uniform Hardenability:** Can be through-hardened in large cross-sections with consistent properties from surface to core. * **Good Machinability & Polishability:** Offers better machinability in the annealed state and can achieve an excellent polished surface finish compared to many high-alloy tool steels, which is vital for plastic molding and fine blanking applications. #### **2. Standard Specifications & International Designations** * **Assab / Uddeholm:** **ASSAB 88** (Proprietary Grade) * **Similar/Equivalent Grades:** * **AISI / ASTM:** Modified A8 type / Similar to S7 but with higher wear resistance. * **DIN / EN:** ~1.2367 / 1.2606 (Not direct equivalents, but in a similar performance class). * **JIS:** SKD11 (Generally outperforms SKD11 in toughness). * **Note:** ASSAB 88 is a proprietary grade, often specified by brand name. It does not have a direct, universal AISI or DIN equivalent, but is frequently compared to and used as a superior alternative to **A2 (DIN 1.2363)** and **D2 (DIN 1.2379)** for many applications. #### **3. Chemical Composition (Typical, Weight %)** | Element | Content (%) | Element | Content (%) | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.90 | **Chromium (Cr)** | 7.80 | | **Molybdenum (Mo)** | 2.50 | **Vanadium (V)** | 0.50 | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.60 | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.30 | | **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.010 | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.020 | | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | #### **4. Typical Heat Treatment** * **Annealing:** Heat to 850-880°C (1560-1615°F), slow cool (15°C/hr) to 600°C, then air cool. Resulting hardness: **~215 HB**. * **Stress Relieving:** 600-650°C (1110-1200°F) after rough machining. * **Preheating:** 650°C (1200°F) and 850°C (1560°F) - two-stage preheat is recommended. * **Austenitizing:** **970-1010°C (1780-1850°F)**. Soak thoroughly (30-45 min.). Higher temperatures increase wear resistance but reduce toughness. * **Quenching:** Cool in still **air** or **forced air** (2-3 bar). For complex shapes, quenching in **salt bath or oil** at 450-550°C followed by air cooling can minimize risk. * **Tempering:** **Immediate tempering** is critical. Typically double tempered at **180-250°C (355-480°F)** for cold work, or at **400-550°C (750-1020°F)** for applications requiring higher toughness. Hardness after tempering typically ranges from **58-62 HRC** for cold work applications. #### **5. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (Hardened & Tempered)** * **Density:** 7.73 g/cm³ (0.279 lb/in³) * **Modulus of Elasticity:** ~210 GPa (30.5 x 10⁶ psi) * **Thermal Expansion Coefficient:** 12.2 x 10⁻⁶/K (20-100°C) * **Thermal Conductivity:** ~25 W/m·K (at 20°C) * **Hardness (Tempered at 200°C):** **60-62 HRC** * **Compressive Strength:** **~2600 MPa** (at 60 HRC) – Very high. * **Toughness:** Good to very good for its wear resistance level. #### **6. Primary Applications** ASSAB 88 is exceptionally versatile and is used for demanding cold work applications where a balance of properties is essential: * **Precision Blanking and Fineblanking Dies** (a key application area). * **Progressive Dies and Lamination Dies** for electronics and motors. * **Forming, Bending, and Cold Extrusion Tools**. * **Shear Blades and Slitter Knives**. * **Thread Rolling Dies and Knurls**. * **High-Wear Plastic Molds and Die-Casting Dies (cores and inserts)** for abrasive materials. * **Master Hobs and Gear Cutting Tools**. * **Punches and Wear Parts** subject to high pressure. #### **7. Availability & Processing Notes** * **Forms Available:** Precision ground flat stock, forged blocks, bars, and pre-finished modules. * **Machining:** Machine in the soft-annealed condition. Use sharp tools with positive rakes. * **EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining):** Standard procedure. A low-temperature stress relief (e.g., 150-200°C) is recommended after roughing. * **Surface Treatment:** Excellent candidate for **PVD coatings (TiN, TiCN, CrN)** and nitriding to further enhance surface performance. * **Welding:** Possible for repair using proper techniques (preheat, matching electrodes, post-weld tempering), but not generally recommended for critical tool sections. --- **Disclaimer:** This information is for reference purposes. ASSAB 88 is a high-performance grade, and its properties are highly dependent on precise heat treatment. For critical tooling, always consult the latest official **Assab / Uddeholm technical data sheets** and consider their application engineering support for optimal results. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Assab Steels ASSAB 88 Cold Work Steel Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <6842 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Assab Steels ASSAB 88 Cold Work Steel Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
