Ductile Iron grade 80-60-03 Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Technical Data Sheet: Ductile Iron (Nodular Iron) Grade 80-60-03** #### **1. Product Overview** Ductile Iron (DI) Grade 80-60-03 is a high-strength, pearlitic-ferritic grade engineered for applications demanding superior tensile and yield strength alongside good wear resistance, while maintaining a fundamental level of ductility. The grade designation indicates minimum mechanical properties: **80 ksi (550 MPa) tensile strength, 60 ksi (415 MPa) yield strength, and 3% elongation**. This grade is typically produced in the **as-cast** or **normalized** condition, resulting in a matrix structure of predominantly pearlite with islands of ferrite surrounding the graphite nodules. It serves as a critical material solution where the higher strength of steel is needed but the castability, damping, and cost-effectiveness of iron are essential. #### **2. Governing International Standards** This grade is recognized under all major international ductile iron specifications. * **Primary Designation: ASTM A536** - *Standard Specification for Ductile Iron Castings*. The grade is designated as **80-60-03**. * **Alternative Designations:** * **ISO 1083:** Designated as **EN-GJS-600-3** or **JS/1050-03** (600 MPa tensile, 370 MPa yield, 3% elongation). Slight variations exist, but 80-60-03 is the direct commercial equivalent. * **EN 1563:** (European Standard) **EN-GJS-600-3**. * **SAE J434:** (Automotive) **D5506**. * **Key Testing Standards:** * **Tensile Test:** ASTM E8 / ISO 6892-1. * **Microstructure:** ASTM A247 / ISO 945 (Nodularity typically >80%, Type I & II graphite in a pearlitic matrix). #### **3. Typical Chemical Composition (As-Cast / Normalized)** The chemistry is balanced to promote a pearlitic matrix in the cast section without full annealing. | Element | Target Range (%) | Functional Role | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 3.5 - 3.8 | Ensures castability and graphite formation. Slightly lower than ferritic grades to strengthen the matrix. | | **Silicon (Si)** | 2.0 - 2.5 | Moderate level. Lower than ferritic grades to allow pearlite formation; higher levels promote ferrite. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.2 - 0.5 | A key pearlite stabilizer. Higher Mn content helps achieve the required pearlitic structure, especially in heavier sections. | | **Magnesium (Mg)** | 0.03 - 0.05 | Essential nodulizing element. | | **Copper (Cu)** | 0.4 - 0.8 | **Primary alloying element for this grade.** A strong and uniform pearlite promoter, essential for achieving consistent high strength throughout the casting. | | **Tin (Sn)** | 0 - 0.1 | Potent pearlite stabilizer; used in small amounts for section uniformity. | | **Molybdenum (Mo)** | 0 - 0.3 | May be added in heavy sections to prevent ferrite formation and increase hardenability. | | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.04 | Kept very low. | | **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.015 | Kept very low. | #### **4. Physical & Mechanical Properties** This grade is defined by high strength and stiffness, with moderate ductility. | Property | Minimum / Typical Value | Test Standard & Notes | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Tensile Strength, min.** | **80 ksi (550 MPa)** | ASTM A536 / ISO 1083 | | **Yield Strength (0.2% offset), min.** | **60 ksi (415 MPa)** | High yield strength is a key feature (~0.75 of UTS). | | **Elongation, min.** | **3%** (in 2 inches or 50mm) | Lower ductility than ferritic grades but sufficient for many high-strength applications. | | **Hardness (Brinell)** | 201 - 269 HBW | Typically 217-241 HBW. Good wear resistance due to hard pearlite. | | **Modulus of Elasticity** | 24 - 25 x 10⁶ psi (165 - 172 GPa) | High stiffness, comparable to steel. | | **Charpy Impact (Unnotched) @ 23°C** | 25 - 40 J (Typical) | Impact resistance is lower than ferritic grades but adequate for many static/dynamic loads. | | **Fatigue Endurance Limit** | ~250 - 275 MPa (≈ 0.45-0.5 x UTS) | Good fatigue performance under cyclic loading. | | **Density** | 0.256 lb/in³ (7.1 g/cm³) | | | **Microstructure** | **70-95% Pearlite** matrix with **>80% Nodularity** (Type I & II graphite). Balance is ferrite surrounding the nodules. | The pearlitic matrix provides the high strength and wear resistance. | #### **5. Product Applications** Grade 80-60-03 is the workhorse high-strength ductile iron, specified for components under high static and dynamic stress. * **Automotive & Trucking (Primary Market):** **Crankshafts, camshafts, differential cases, ring gears, hub carriers, steering knuckles, disc brake calipers.** Its strength withstands high torque and bending loads. * **Heavy Machinery & Construction:** **Gearbox housings, hydraulic cylinder barrels, pump bodies, rollers, idlers, and heavy-duty axle components** for mining and agricultural equipment. * **Industrial Machinery:** **Press frames, spindles, machine tool components, compressor crankshafts, and valve bodies** requiring high stiffness and fatigue resistance. * **Railway:** **Bogie frames, coupler components, and brake discs.** * **Power Transmission:** **Large gear blanks** where its castability for complex shapes and good machinability are advantageous over steel forgings. #### **6. Fabrication & Heat Treatment Notes** * **Primary Condition:** **As-Cast or Normalized.** Normalizing (heating to 870-900°C, air cooling) refines the pearlite structure, ensuring consistent high strength and improved mechanical properties throughout the casting. * **Machinability:** **Fair to Good.** More demanding than ferritic grades (60-40-18) due to the harder pearlitic matrix, but still superior to most steels. Requires robust tooling and correct parameters. * **Weldability:** **Poor.** Not recommended for general fabrication welding. If repair is unavoidable, it requires stringent procedures: high pre-heat (500-600°C), specialized nickel-iron electrodes, and controlled post-weld cooling to avoid hard, crack-susceptible zones. Stress relief is mandatory. #### **7. Ordering Information** Specify: **"Ductile Iron Castings, ASTM A536 Grade 80-60-03 (Normalized/As-Cast)"**. Key details to include: * **Condition:** Specify if normalized heat treatment is required. * **Drawing/Part Specification.** * **Required certifications:** Foundry test report with mechanical properties (tensile, yield, elongation, hardness). Microstructure specification (e.g., minimum pearlite content) may be required. * **Any special requirements:** Non-destructive testing (NDT) such as ultrasonic or magnetic particle inspection for critical areas. Grade 80-60-03 provides an optimal performance-to-cost ratio for high-integrity components, successfully replacing forged steel in countless applications by leveraging the design freedom and economic benefits of the casting process. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Ductile Iron grade 80-60-03 Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <6518 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Ductile Iron grade 80-60-03 Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
