Meehanite CR Corrosion Resisting Cast Iron Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ## **Meehanite CR Series: Corrosion-Resisting High-Silicon Cast Iron** --- ### **1. Product Overview** Meehanite CR is a specialized grade of high-silicon ferritic cast iron engineered for exceptional resistance to a wide range of corrosive media, particularly **oxidizing acids**. The "CR" designation stands for **Corrosion Resisting**. This alloy belongs to the family of high-silicon irons (typically containing 14-18% Silicon), which are renowned for forming an extremely stable, adherent, and self-healing silicon dioxide (SiO₂) passive layer on their surface. This layer provides outstanding protection against chemical attack, making CR a cost-effective solution for severe corrosive environments where standard stainless steels may fail. Its primary limitation is brittleness and poor machinability, but for applications where corrosion resistance is paramount and components can be cast to near-net shape, it offers unmatched performance and longevity. --- ### **2. Chemical Composition** The extraordinary corrosion resistance of Meehanite CR is achieved through a unique and tightly controlled high-silicon composition. * **Silicon (Si):** 14.2% - 16.0% (The key alloying element. Forms the protective SiO₂ film.) * **Carbon (C):** 0.6% - 1.0% (Kept low to minimize the formation of graphite, which can disrupt the passive layer and provide pathways for corrosion.) * **Manganese (Mn):** 0.3% - 0.8% * **Chromium (Cr):** Often **4.0% - 5.0%** (A critical addition in many CR grades. Chromium further enhances corrosion resistance, particularly in oxidizing and chloride-containing environments, by contributing to a mixed Cr₂O₃/SiO₂ passive layer. Some grades may have 0.5-1.0% Cr.) * **Molybdenum (Mo):** May be added up to 3.0% in specialized grades to improve resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride solutions. * **Copper (Cu):** Sometimes added in small amounts (<1%) to improve corrosion resistance in certain media, like sulfuric acid. * **Phosphorus (P):** < 0.15% * **Sulfur (S):** < 0.05% **Microstructure:** A hard, brittle, fully **ferritic matrix** with fine graphite flakes (or sometimes a near-white iron structure) and complex intermetallic silicide phases. The high silicon content makes the matrix inherently passive. --- ### **3. Physical & Mechanical Properties** **A. General Physical Properties:** * **Density:** ~7.0 g/cm³ (Lighter than standard cast iron) * **Melting Point:** Approximately 1150-1220°C (2100-2230°F) * **Electrical Resistivity:** Very High (Suitable for some electrolytic applications) * **Thermal Conductivity:** Low (~15-20 W/m·K) – provides good insulation. **B. Mechanical Properties (at Room Temperature):** * **Tensile Strength:** 110 - 170 MPa (Relatively low) * **Compressive Strength:** 550 - 700 MPa (Very high compared to tensile) * **Modulus of Elasticity:** 85 - 110 GPa * **Elongation:** < 1% (Extremely brittle – negligible ductility) * **Hardness:** 300 - 500 HB (Very hard and wear-resistant, but brittle) * **Impact Resistance:** Very Low (Poor shock resistance). **C. Key Performance Characteristics:** * **Superb Corrosion Resistance:** Excellent resistance to **oxidizing acids** (e.g., nitric, chromic, sulfuric above 95% concentration), organic acids, and many salt solutions. * **Limited Application:** Not suitable for **hydrofluoric acid, hot concentrated alkalis, or alternating redox conditions** which can break down the SiO₂ layer. * **Machinability:** **Extremely Poor.** Can only be ground or machined with diamond/carbide tools. Components must be **cast to shape**. * **Thermal Shock Resistance:** Poor, due to low thermal conductivity and high brittleness. * **Weldability:** Not weldable by conventional methods. --- ### **4. Product Applications** Meehanite CR is used almost exclusively in aggressive chemical environments where its corrosion resistance outweighs its mechanical limitations. * **Chemical & Petrochemical Processing:** * **Pumps:** Casings, impellers, and wear rings for acid handling. * **Valves:** Plug, ball, and check valve bodies and trim for corrosive service. * **Pipe & Fittings:** Elbows, tees, pipe sections for acid waste lines. * **Pollution Control & Scrubbers:** * **Scrubber Tower Components:** Packing support plates, mist eliminators, spray nozzles. * **Ducting and Dampers** for corrosive fume handling. * **Electroplating & Metal Finishing:** * **Anode Baskets**, heating/cooling coils, tank linings. * **Fertilizer Industry:** Equipment handling sulfuric and phosphoric acids. * **Mining & Hydrometallurgy:** Acid leaching tanks and associated components. * **Pharmaceutical:** Reactor parts for corrosive chemical synthesis. --- ### **5. International & Relevant Standards** Meehanite CR corresponds directly to standardized high-silicon corrosion-resistant cast irons. The most common standards are: * **ASTM A518/A518M - Standard Specification for Corrosion-Resistant High-Silicon Iron Castings** * **Grade 1:** 14.20-14.75% Si * **Grade 2:** 14.50-15.00% Si * **Grade 3:** 14.20-14.75% Si, **3.25-5.00% Cr** (This is the most common specification for Meehanite CR, emphasizing the chromium-enhanced grade). * **ISO 2893:1973 - High silicon cast irons** (This standard has been withdrawn but is still commonly referenced. It defined grades like **Si 14** and **SiCr 14 4**). * **DIN 1695 - High silicon cast iron** (German standard, material designation **G-X 150 SiCr**). * **BS 1591:1975** - (British Standard for high silicon cast iron, now withdrawn but referenced historically). **Note:** Meehanite "CR" is typically supplied to meet the chemical and mechanical requirements of **ASTM A518 Grade 3** or its international equivalents (e.g., DIN G-X 150 SiCr). Due to its specialized nature, it is also commonly supplied against **detailed customer-specific technical data sheets** that define the required corrosion test performance in specific media. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Meehanite CR Corrosion Resisting Cast Iron Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <6636 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Meehanite CR Corrosion Resisting Cast Iron Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
