Sandvik 20C Strip Steel Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ## **Sandvik 20C Strip Steel – Precision Low-Carbon Case-Hardening Steel for Complex Forming** ### **Product Overview** Sandvik 20C is a high-quality, **low-carbon case-hardening steel strip** engineered for applications requiring excellent formability in the soft state followed by surface hardening to achieve a wear-resistant, durable component. Characterized by its consistent microstructure, superior surface finish, and precise dimensional tolerances, 20C is designed for manufacturers who need to create complex shapes through deep drawing, stamping, or bending before applying carburizing or carbonitriding heat treatments. It represents an optimal balance between fabrication ease and final performance. ### **Key Advantages** * **Excellent Formability:** Very low carbon content ensures exceptional ductility and malleability in the annealed state, allowing for severe deformation without cracking. * **Superior Surface Quality:** Produced with a clean, uniform surface ideal for subsequent plating, coating, or direct heat treatment without extensive preparation. * **Controlled Dimensional Consistency:** Tight thickness and width tolerances support high-volume precision manufacturing with minimal adjustment. * **Effective Case Hardening Response:** Readily absorbs carbon during carburizing to develop a hard, wear-resistant surface (typically 58-62 HRC) while maintaining a tough, ductile core (~20-30 HRC). * **Cost-Effective Performance:** Provides an economical solution for components requiring high surface hardness and wear resistance without the need for through-hardening alloy steels. ### **Chemical Composition (Typical, wt%)** The composition prioritizes formability while containing elements that promote effective case hardening. | Element | Content (%) | Element | Content (%) | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.17 - 0.23 | **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.60 - 0.90 | | **Silicon (Si)** | ≤ 0.30 | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.025 | | **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.025 | **Aluminum (Al)*** | 0.020 - 0.050 | | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | | | ***Note:** Aluminum is often added as a grain refiner (Al-killed steel) to ensure a fine, uniform ferritic microstructure, enhancing formability and post-heat treatment properties.* ### **Physical & Mechanical Properties** #### **Properties in Annealed Condition (as supplied strip):** * **Density:** 7.87 g/cm³ * **Modulus of Elasticity (E):** 210 GPa * **Tensile Strength (Rm):** 350 - 500 MPa * **Yield Strength (Rp0.2):** 250 - 350 MPa * **Elongation (A₅₀):** ≥ 30% * **Hardness:** 110 - 150 HB * **Grain Size:** Typically ASTM 8-10 (fine grain) #### **Properties after Case Hardening (e.g., Carburizing & Quenching):** * **Surface Hardness:** **58 - 62 HRC** (achievable case depth depends on cycle: e.g., 0.3-1.0 mm) * **Core Hardness:** 20 - 30 HRC (providing good toughness and impact resistance) * **Core Tensile Strength:** ~800 - 1000 MPa #### **Hardenability & Microstructure:** * Exhibits a shallow Jominy hardenability curve, suitable for case hardening where a soft, tough core is desired. * Fine prior austenite grain size minimizes distortion during quenching and allows for sharper case-core transition. ### **International Standards & Approvals** Sandvik 20C corresponds to widely recognized international case-hardening steel grades. * **Sandvik Grade:** **20C** * **Direct Equivalent Standards:** * **EN / DIN:** 1.0460 (C22E / C22R) * **AISI/SAE:** 1022 (Modified) * **UNS:** G10220 * **ISO:** 683-18: Case-hardening steels * **Common Specifications:** Often supplied to meet **EN 10132** for cold rolled narrow strip. ### **Product Applications** 20C is the material of choice for components that are heavily formed before requiring a hard, wear-resistant surface. * **Automotive:** * Window regulator components * Seat adjustment gears and cams * Fasteners and clips requiring forming * Small transmission and steering components * **Industrial & Mechanical Engineering:** * Gears, pinions, and sprockets (small to medium size) * Bushings and bearings * Clutch parts and lever arms * Guides and wear plates * **Consumer Goods & Hardware:** * Lock components (tumblers, barrels) * Tool parts (e.g., wrench jaws, adjustable spanner components) * Appliance gears and levers * Furniture mechanisms * **General Fasteners & Small Parts:** * Custom bolts, screws, and rivets that undergo cold heading * Springs that require forming before heat treatment ### **Processing Guidelines** * **Forming (Annealed State):** Excellent for **deep drawing, stamping, bending, and cold heading**. No intermediate annealing is typically required for most shapes. * **Machining:** Good machinability in the annealed state. Produces short chips. Pre-hardening machining is standard. * **Heat Treatment – Case Hardening:** 1. **Carburizing/Carbonitriding:** Typically at 880-930°C in a carbon-rich atmosphere. 2. **Quenching:** Direct oil quenching or reheating to 780-820°C followed by quenching. 3. **Tempering:** Low temperature (150-200°C) to relieve quenching stresses and improve toughness. * **Alternative Processing:** Can also be through-hardened for simpler parts, though core strength will be lower than alloy steels. * **Surface Treatment:** Excellent substrate for **electroplating (zinc, nickel, chromium), phosphating, or painting** after heat treatment and cleaning. ### **Availability** Sandvik supplies 20C as cold-rolled precision strip, optimized for metal forming industries. * **Thickness:** Typically 0.5 mm to 5.0 mm * **Width:** Up to 330 mm (standard mill capacity) * **Condition:** Soft Annealed (A) or Skin-Passed (SP) for optimal flatness. * **Surface Finish:** Bright (2B), matte, or with a temporary rust preventive oil. * **Packaging:** Coils on carriers, or precision-cut blanks. --- **Design & Manufacturing Note:** The success of a case-hardened component depends on the synergy between material, part design, and heat treatment process. **Core hardness and case depth must be specified based on the part's function and loading.** For critical applications, prototyping and testing are strongly recommended. Consult Sandvik's technical experts for guidance on forming limits, heat treatment specifications, and to obtain detailed continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagrams for the specific strip thickness being used. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Sandvik 20C Strip Steel Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <7446 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Sandvik 20C Strip Steel Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
