### **Product Datasheet: Latrobe Stark™ ASTM M4 High-Speed Steel (HSS)**
**1. Product Overview**
Latrobe Stark™ is a premier, high-carbon, high-vanadium molybdenum-based high-speed steel that meets the ASTM A600 M4 specification. Engineered for the most severe applications, Stark™ delivers an unparalleled combination of **extreme abrasion resistance** and **very high hot hardness**. It is designed to outperform standard M2 and even M3 grades in applications where wear is the dominant failure mechanism, often serving as a cost-effective alternative to carbide in certain demanding operations.
**2. Key Features & Benefits**
* **Ultimate Abrasion/Wear Resistance:** Features the highest vanadium content among common Mo-based HSS grades, leading to an extremely high volume of hard, wear-resistant vanadium carbides. This property defines its core application.
* **Very High Red Hardness:** Its alloy composition allows it to maintain cutting edge integrity and hardness at temperatures where other HSS grades would soften, bridging the gap between standard HSS and carbide.
* **High Strength:** Capable of achieving and maintaining very high hardness levels (66-68 HRC), providing excellent resistance to deformation under load.
* **Controlled Machinability & Grindability:** While challenging to machine and grind due to its high hardness and carbide content, Stark™ is produced with consistency to ensure predictable behavior during tool manufacturing.
**3. Standard Chemical Composition (Weight %)**
Stark™ is manufactured to the precise requirements of ASTM A600 M4. The typical analysis is:
| Element | Content (%) | Element | Content (%) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | 1.25 - 1.40 | **Tungsten (W)** | 5.25 - 6.50 |
| **Chromium (Cr)** | 3.75 - 4.75 | **Vanadium (V)** | 3.75 - 4.50 |
| **Molybdenum (Mo)**| 4.25 - 5.50 | **Cobalt (Co)** | - |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.15 - 0.40 | **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.03 |
| **Silicon (Si)** | 0.20 - 0.45 | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.03 |
*(Note: The defining characteristic is the very high combined Carbon and Vanadium content, which is among the highest for non-cobalt HSS grades.)*
**4. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties**
* **Density:** ~8.10 g/cm³ (0.293 lb/in³)
* **Thermal Conductivity:** Low, typical of high-alloy HSS.
* **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion:** ~11.0 x 10⁻⁶ /K (20-400°C)
* **Hardness (Annealed):** Maximum 269 HB
* **Hardness (Hardened & Tempered):** **65 - 68 HRC** (Typically run at 66-68 HRC to maximize its wear and hot hardness properties).
**5. Primary Applications**
Stark™ (M4) is the material of choice for extreme wear conditions where standard HSS fails prematurely. Applications include:
* **Cutting Tools for Abrasive Materials:**
* Broaches, gear hobs, and form tools for machining high-strength alloy steels and nickel-based superalloys.
* High-performance milling cutters and single-point tools for hardened steels, stainless steels, and high-temperature alloys.
* Punches and dies for severe cold-forming operations.
* **Wear Parts Subject to Extreme Abrasion:**
* Knives for cutting abrasive non-metallic materials (e.g., fiberglass, carbon fiber composites, rubber, plastic with mineral fillers).
* Wear plates, guides, and slitters in demanding industrial environments.
* Wear components in the pulp and paper industry.
**6. Relevant International Standards**
Latrobe Stark™ is produced to meet or exceed the following international standards:
* **ASTM A600-92 (Reapproved):** Standard Specification for High-Speed Steel (M4).
* **UNS:** T11344
* **Equivalent Designations:**
* **AISI:** M4
* **DIN:** 1.3343
* **ISO:** HS6-5-4
* **JIS:** SKH54
**7. Comparison & Selection Guidance**
* **vs. M2/M3:** Stark™ offers vastly superior wear resistance and hot hardness but with lower toughness. It is less forgiving under shock or interrupted cuts.
* **vs. Cobalt HSS (M35, M42):** While M42 may achieve higher hardness, M4 typically provides better wear resistance due to its high vanadium content. M4 is chosen for abrasion; cobalt grades are chosen for extreme hot hardness.
* **vs. Carbide:** Stark™ offers better toughness and can be used in more complex tool geometries than carbide, making it a viable option when carbide tools are too brittle or expensive to manufacture.
**8. Heat Treatment Note**
Successful application of Stark™ requires meticulous heat treatment, including proper preheating, austenitizing at high temperatures, and multiple tempering cycles to achieve optimal properties and dimensional stability.
**9. Disclaimer**
The information provided is typical and for reference purposes. Actual properties can vary based on processing, heat treatment, and section size. For critical applications, consultation with Latrobe's technical service team and conducting application-specific testing is strongly recommended.
