**Product Datasheet: AISI 1566 Steel (UNS G15660)**
**1. Material Overview**
AISI 1566, identified by UNS designation **G15660**, is a high-carbon, high-manganese, non-alloy (carbon) steel. It belongs to the "15xx" series of SAE/AISI steels, which are characterized by a higher manganese content (typically 1.00% min.) compared to the standard "10xx" carbon steel series. This specific grade combines a high carbon content with elevated manganese to produce a material with **very high strength, excellent hardenability, and good wear resistance** in the heat-treated condition. It is commonly supplied in the form of hot-rolled or forged bars, billets, and occasionally as plate.
**2. Key Material Concept**
The **primary advantage of AISI 1566 over a simple high-carbon steel like 1066** is its **manganese content**. Manganese significantly increases the hardenability of the steel, allowing thicker cross-sections to be through-hardened upon quenching. This results in a more uniform martensitic microstructure and better mechanical properties in the final part. It is often selected for applications demanding a combination of high surface hardness and a tough core.
**3. International Standard Specifications**
This steel composition is recognized under several international standards:
* **SAE/AISI:** 1566
* **UNS:** G15660
* **ASTM A29/A29M:** Standard Specification for Steel Bars, Carbon and Alloy, Hot-Wrought and Cold-Finished (Covers this grade under general requirements).
* **ASTM A510:** Standard Specification for General Requirements for Wire Rods and Coarse Round Wire, Carbon Steel.
* **Federal Standard (U.S.):** QQ-S-637 (Steel Bars, Carbon)
* **European Approximate Equivalent:** 1.1264 (66Mn4) according to DIN EN 10083-2. *Note: European grades may have slight compositional differences.*
* **Japanese Approximate Equivalent:** SUP9 according to JIS G4801 (Spring Steels), though chemistry differs slightly.
**4. Chemical Composition (% by Weight, SAE Standard)**
The following composition defines the AISI 1566 / UNS G15660 grade:
| Element | Min (%) | Max (%) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | 0.60 | 0.71 |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.50 | 1.80 |
| **Phosphorus (P)** | --- | 0.040 |
| **Sulfur (S)** | --- | 0.050 |
| **Silicon (Si)** | 0.15 | 0.30 |
| **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Balance |
**Key Interpretation:** The combined effect of **~0.65% Carbon** and **~1.65% Manganese** places this steel in the category of deep-hardening, high-strength structural and spring steels.
**5. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties**
Properties vary significantly with the form (bar, wire) and thermal condition (hot-rolled, annealed, heat-treated). The values below are typical ranges.
**A. Physical Properties:**
* **Density:** 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³)
* **Melting Point:** ~ 1420 - 1460°C (2590 - 2660°F)
* **Modulus of Elasticity (E):** 190 - 210 GPa (28 - 30 x 10⁶ psi)
* **Poisson's Ratio:** 0.27 - 0.30
* **Thermal Conductivity:** ~ 48 W/m·K (at 20°C)
* **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion:** 11.5 x 10⁻⁶/°C (20-100°C)
**B. Mechanical Properties (Varies by Condition):**
* **As-Hot-Rolled (Annealed):**
* **Tensile Strength:** 600 - 750 MPa (87 - 109 ksi)
* **Yield Strength:** 350 MPa (51 ksi) min.
* **Elongation:** 15% - 20%
* **Hardness:** 179 - 217 HBW
* **Condition:** Softer state, suitable for machining and forming.
* **Heat-Treated (Quenched & Tempered):**
* **Tensile Strength:** 1000 - 1400 MPa (145 - 203 ksi)
* **Yield Strength:** 800 - 1200 MPa (116 - 174 ksi)
* **Elongation:** 10% - 15%
* **Hardness:** 35 - 55 HRC (depending on tempering temperature)
* **Condition:** High strength and wear resistance.
**6. Heat Treatment Characteristics**
* **Hardenability:** Excellent, due to high Mn. Suitable for through-hardening of moderately large sections.
* **Forging Temperature:** 1150 - 900°C (2100 - 1650°F).
* **Annealing Temperature:** Full anneal at ~830-850°C (1525-1560°F), slow cool.
* **Hardening (Quenching):** Austenitize at 790-830°C (1450-1525°F), quench in oil. Water quenching may be used for maximum hardness but increases risk of distortion/cracking.
* **Tempering:** Typically performed between 400-600°C (750-1110°F) to achieve the desired combination of toughness and strength.
* **Machinability (Annealed State):** Fair. The high Mn content can promote work hardening. Use positive rake tools, rigid setup, and moderate feeds/speeds.
* **Weldability:** Poor. Preheating (200-300°C / 400-570°F) and strict post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) are mandatory to prevent cracking in the heat-affected zone (HAZ).
**7. Primary Applications**
AISI 1566 is selected for demanding applications requiring a resilient, hard, and strong material, often after heat treatment:
* **Heavy-Duty Springs:** Coil springs, leaf springs (especially for railway and heavy vehicles), and torsion bars.
* **High-Strength Shafts & Axles:** Drive shafts, axles, and pins that require a tough core and hard wear surface.
* **Agricultural & Earth-Moving Equipment:** High-wear parts like plowshares, cultivator teeth, grader blade edges, and bucket tips.
* **Forged Components:** High-strength forgings such as connecting rods, levers, and gears for industrial machinery.
* **Hand Tools:** Heavy-duty wrenches, crowbars, and other impact tools.
**8. Available Forms & Ordering**
* **Common Forms:** Hot-rolled round/square/flat bars, forging billets, wire rod.
* **Condition:** Typically supplied as hot-rolled or annealed to facilitate further processing (forging, machining) by the end-user, who will perform final heat treatment.
**Disclaimer:** The information provided is typical and for reference purposes. Actual properties depend on manufacturing process, section size, and heat treatment. For critical applications, always consult the certified material test report (CMTR) from the supplier and/or conduct validation testing.
