# **Latrobe LSS™ O1 Tool Steel (ASTM O1)**
## **Product Overview**
Latrobe LSS™ O1 is a premium-grade, **oil-hardening**, non-shrinking cold work tool steel that serves as a fundamental and highly versatile alloy in the toolmaking industry. Conforming to the ASTM O1 specification, it offers an outstanding balance of **good machinability, excellent dimensional stability during heat treatment, and reliable wear resistance**. Known for its predictable behavior and ease of use, O1 is the benchmark "go-to" steel for a vast array of general-purpose tooling, jigs, fixtures, and gauges where precision, reliability, and cost-effectiveness are paramount.
## **Key Features & Benefits**
* **Excellent Dimensional Stability:** As a non-shrinking (or low-distortion) oil-hardening steel, O1 exhibits minimal and predictable size change during quenching, making it ideal for precision tools and complex dies that must maintain tight tolerances.
* **Superior Machinability:** Offers excellent machinability in the annealed state, among the best of all tool steels, allowing for easy fabrication of intricate shapes and reducing production time and tool wear.
* **Good Wear Resistance:** Provides adequate wear resistance for a wide range of applications, balancing service life with ease of sharpening and maintenance.
* **Ease of Heat Treatment:** Relatively simple and forgiving heat treatment process (oil quenching) compared to air-hardening grades, accessible to most tool rooms with standard equipment.
* **Cost-Effective Performance:** Provides a reliable and economical solution for a majority of tooling applications that do not require the extreme wear resistance or hot hardness of more highly alloyed steels.
## **International Standard & Designations**
* **Primary Standard:** **ASTM A681-08 (R2019):** Standard Specification for Tool Steel Alloy.
* **Grade:** **O1**
* **Manufacturer's Designation:** **Latrobe LSS™ O1**
* **Unified Numbering System (UNS):** **T31501**
* **Common International Equivalents:**
* **ISO:** **100MnCrW4** / **~95MnWCr5**
* **Germany (DIN/W-Nr.):** **1.2510 / 100MnCrW4**
* **Japan (JIS):** **SKS3**
* **Sweden (SS):** **2140**
## **Chemical Composition (%, typical - ASTM O1)**

## **Physical & Mechanical Properties (Typical)**
| Property | Value / Description |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Density** | 7.86 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³) |
| **Hardness (Annealed)** | 190-215 HB (Brinell) |
| **Hardness (Heat Treated)** | **57 - 62 HRC** (Standard optimal working range) |
| **Austenitizing Temperature** | 775 - 800°C (1425 - 1475°F) |
| **Quenching Medium** | Oil (heated to 40-60°C / 100-140°F) |
| **Tempering Temperature** | **150 - 315°C (300 - 600°F).** Commonly tempered at 175-205°C (350-400°F) to achieve maximum hardness (60-62 HRC) and stability. **Single temper is often sufficient.** |
| **Dimensional Change on Hardening** | Minimal and predictable; slight growth is typical. |
| **Toughness** | Moderate. Suitable for applications without severe impact. |
| **Machinability** | **Excellent** (Approximately 90-100% of a 1% carbon steel benchmark). |
## **Product Applications**
Latrobe LSS™ O1 is the quintessential general-purpose tool steel used across virtually every manufacturing sector.
* **Jigs, Fixtures, and Gauges:** Master templates, drill jigs, inspection fixtures, and precision measuring tools.
* **Blanking and Forming Dies:** For low to medium production runs on softer materials (brass, aluminum, mild steel, plastics).
* **Machine Tool Components:** Arbors, collets, bushings, and wear plates.
* **Cutting Tools:** Lathe tools, planer tools, taps, reamers, and knives for woodworking or plastic.
* **Punches, Die Inserts, and Ejector Pins.**
* **Stamping and Embossing Tools.**
* **Hand Tools:** Wrenches, socket drivers, and specialized manual tools.
## **Processing & Heat Treatment Notes**
* **Machining:** **Exceptional** machinability. Can be readily turned, milled, and drilled in the annealed condition.
* **Heat Treatment:** Process is straightforward but requires control. Preheat to 650-700°C (1200-1300°F) is recommended for complex parts. Austenitize at the recommended **low temperature** in a salt bath, controlled atmosphere, or packed in cast iron chips to prevent decarburization. Quench in a circulating oil bath. **Temper immediately** after the part reaches hand-warm temperature (50-65°C / 120-150°F). Over-tempering (above 315°C / 600°F) will lead to a rapid loss of hardness.
* **Grinding:** Grinds easily. Use standard practices.
* **Surface Treatments:** Can be case-hardened (carburized) or nitrided to improve surface properties for specific applications. Black oxide coating is common for corrosion resistance and appearance.
