# **AISI 4142 Steel (Annealed and Cold Drawn) Product Specification**
## **1. PRODUCT DEFINITION & PROCESS**
**Product:** AISI 4142 Steel Cold Drawn Bar
**Condition:** Annealed and Cold Drawn
**Manufacturing Process:**
1. **Hot Rolling:** Initial reduction from billet to rough size
2. **Full Annealing:** Complete softening heat treatment
3. **Cold Drawing:** Final reduction through dies at room temperature
4. **Optional Stress Relieving:** May be applied for critical applications
**Material State:** This product combines the metallurgical benefits of annealing (softness, uniformity) with the mechanical advantages of cold working (improved strength, dimensional accuracy, surface finish). It is supplied as a "ready-to-machine" material with consistent properties throughout.
## **2. CHEMICAL COMPOSITION**
| Element | Composition Range (% by weight) | Metallurgical Role |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | 0.40 - 0.45 | Higher than 4140, providing increased hardenability and strength potential after final heat treatment. Forms pearlite/ferrite structure in annealed state. |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.75 - 1.00 | Enhances hardenability and contributes to solid solution strengthening. Helps maintain ductility during cold drawing. |
| **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.035 | Residual impurity, kept low to preserve cold formability and toughness. |
| **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.040 | Residual impurity; may be slightly elevated in free-machining variants. |
| **Silicon (Si)** | 0.15 - 0.35 | Deoxidizer; provides solid solution strengthening. |
| **Chromium (Cr)** | 0.80 - 1.10 | Increases hardenability and wear resistance potential. |
| **Molybdenum (Mo)** | 0.15 - 0.25 | Enhances hardenability, reduces temper embrittlement, improves high-temperature properties. |
**Note on Carbon Content:** The 0.40-0.45% carbon range distinguishes 4142 from 4140, providing approximately 10-15% higher hardenability and greater achievable hardness after quenching.
## **3. METALLURGICAL STRUCTURE & PROCESS EFFECTS**
**Annealed Microstructure:** Coarse lamellar pearlite in a ferrite matrix (typical Brinell 170-210)
**Cold Drawing Effects:**
- **Grain Distortion:** Elongation of ferrite grains in drawing direction
- **Work Hardening:** Dislocation density increases, raising yield strength
- **Texture Development:** Preferred orientation of grains
- **Residual Stresses:** Compressive at surface, tensile in core (typical pattern)
**Dimensional Characteristics (Cold Drawn Advantage):**
- **Tolerance:** ±0.075mm (±0.003") for diameters up to 25mm
- **Surface Finish:** 1.6-3.2 μm Ra (63-125 μin) typical
- **Straightness:** 0.5mm per meter maximum
- **Scale-Free:** Cold drawing produces clean, scale-free surface ideal for machining
## **4. MECHANICAL PROPERTIES (TYPICAL)**
*Properties are anisotropic; longitudinal values are higher than transverse.*
| Property | Typical Range | Directional Note |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Ultimate Tensile Strength** | 620 - 750 MPa (90,000 - 109,000 psi) | Longitudinal |
| **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 415 - 550 MPa (60,000 - 80,000 psi) | 15-25% increase over annealed-only |
| **Elongation (in 50mm)** | 18% - 22% | Reduced from annealed (~25%) |
| **Reduction of Area** | 50% - 60% | Good ductility retained |
| **Hardness** | 190 - 230 HB | Increases with higher cold reduction |

**Anisotropy Effects:**
- **Transverse Ductility:** Typically 60-70% of longitudinal values
- **Impact Toughness:** Higher in longitudinal direction
- **Fatigue Strength:** Improved surface from cold work compressive stresses
