Latrobe DuraTech™ NINE Powder Metal Tool Steel Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Latrobe DuraTech™ NINE Powder Metallurgy (PM) Tool Steel** **Product Overview** Latrobe DuraTech™ NINE is a next-generation, high-performance powder metallurgy (PM) tool steel designed to bridge the critical gap between extreme wear resistance and superior toughness. It represents a significant advancement over traditional high-vanadium steels (like A11/10V) by offering a more balanced property profile. DuraTech™ NINE achieves this through an optimized chemical composition and the homogeneous, isotropic microstructure inherent to the PM process. The result is a versatile material that excels in demanding applications where tools must withstand a combination of abrasive wear, adhesive wear (galling), chipping, and high mechanical stress. This steel is engineered for applications where conventional D2 or M4 steels wear out too quickly, but the brittleness of A11-type steels is a concern. --- **Chemical Composition (Typical Weight %)** | Element | Carbon (C) | Chromium (Cr) | Vanadium (V) | Molybdenum (Mo) | Tungsten (W) | Cobalt (Co) | | :--- | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | | **Content** | 1.80 | 4.75 | 8.00 | 3.50 | 1.50 | 9.50 | *The innovative composition combines high vanadium for wear resistance with significant cobalt and molybdenum for enhanced hot hardness, strength, and tempering resistance.* --- **Key Physical & Mechanical Properties** * **Exceptional Balance of Wear & Toughness:** Provides wear resistance significantly better than PM M4 or high-speed steels like M42, while offering substantially higher toughness than A11/10V-type steels. * **High Hot Hardness & Red Hardness:** The cobalt and tungsten content allows the steel to retain its hardness at elevated temperatures, making it suitable for applications involving frictional heat. * **High Compressive Strength:** Excellent resistance to deformation under heavy load. * **Good Resistance to Galling/Adhesive Wear:** Performs well in applications involving aluminum, copper, or other sticky materials. * **Isotropic Properties:** Uniform performance in all directions due to the PM process, ensuring predictable tool behavior and minimal distortion during heat treatment. * **Improved Grindability & EDM Performance:** Superior to conventional ingot-cast high-vanadium steels. *Note: Specific mechanical values depend on heat treatment. Typical service hardness is in the range of **64-67 HRC**, allowing it to be run harder than many other high-wear steels while maintaining toughness.* --- **Heat Treatment (Guidelines)** * **Annealing:** Heat to 1600-1650°F (871-899°C), slow furnace cool. Typical annealed hardness: ~240 HB. * **Preheating:** Double preheat (e.g., 1500°F / 815°C and 1850°F / 1010°C) is critical due to high alloy content. * **Austenitizing:** Recommended range: **2175-2225°F (1190-1218°C)**. Accurate temperature control is essential. * **Quenching:** Quench in **salt, oil, or gas (under high pressure)**. Air cooling may be sufficient for very small sections but is not generally recommended for full hardness. * **Tempering:** **Multiple tempers (2-3 times) are mandatory.** Temper within the range of **1025-1050°F (552-566°C)**. Hardness will peak in this range (64-67 HRC). Avoid tempering below 950°F (510°C). --- **Applications** DuraTech™ NINE is ideal for complex, high-stress tools subjected to severe wear. Its balanced properties make it a premier choice for: * **Precision Blanking & Punching Dies:** For advanced high-strength steels (AHSS), silicon steels, stainless steels, and abrasive non-ferrous materials. * **Cold Forming & Extrusion Tools:** Punches, dies, and inserts where high pressure and wear combine. * **Powder Metal (P/M) Compaction Tooling:** Core rods and die inserts for pressing abrasive metal powders. * **Severe Drawing and Forming Dies:** Especially for abrasive or sticky materials. * **Industrial Knives and Slitters:** For cutting difficult-to-machine or composite materials. * **Thread Rolling and Cold Heading Dies:** Where wear and high surface pressure are critical. * **Replacement for Carbide:** In applications where carbide's brittleness is problematic, offering a more robust alternative. --- **International Standards & Cross-References** * **AISI/SAE:** This is a proprietary PM grade and does not have a direct AISI classification. It is positioned between AISI M4 and AISI A11. * **UNS:** No direct UNS equivalent. * **European (EN):** ~1.8C-5Cr-8V-3.5Mo-9.5Co (Closest approximation, but no direct EN equivalent). * **Common Market Equivalent:** The most widely recognized direct equivalent is **CPM 9V** (Crucible Particle Metallurgy 9V). * **Other Manufacturers:** Similar balanced high-vanadium cobalt steels are available as proprietary grades (e.g., **Böhler S590**, **Daido DC9V**). --- **Why Choose Latrobe DuraTech™ NINE?** DuraTech™ NINE is the intelligent choice when tool failure is a complex mix of wear, chipping, and fatigue. It eliminates the traditional compromise between wear resistance and toughness, offering a "sweet spot" that maximizes tool life and reliability in the most punishing applications. By reducing unplanned downtime and increasing parts-per-sharpening, it delivers a lower total cost of ownership for critical tooling. *For detailed heat treatment protocols, property data sheets, or application engineering support, please contact Latrobe Specialty Metals or your authorized distributor.* -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Latrobe DuraTech™ NINE Powder Metal Tool Steel Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <5365 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Latrobe DuraTech™ NINE Powder Metal Tool Steel Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
